Just cut the cable

If you have kids you are likely going to be paying data overage charges if you have netflix, hulu, PSVue, etc. We have Mediacom and some months we could have been paying direct TV as it is about the same amount per month. Worse in the winter months when trapped indoors. It is kind of the hidden charge you don't think about. If it were just me and my wife we'd be fine and it would be much cheaper. Sometimes I see my son watching Youtube on his Ipod while streaming something on TV and yes he gets a chewing for that.
 
I'm just grateful that we all have so many options.
Most people in this world don't have squat.

Actually many developing countries have much better infrastructure as its all new. They also figure out very creative ways to stream for free or at low cost. Not all but youd be surprised at what they can get.

We use outdated infrastructure that is archaic.
 
You know what's funny?

I called DirectTv a couple weeks ago and canceled. I said I want to cancel a week from today (so the next Wednesday). I thought I'd give myself a week to get something else lined up like Playstation Vue. I explained to them why I was canceling and everything. My cancellation was scheduled for the next Wednesday.

Well the day after I called and canceled a Customer Care Specialist with DirectTV called me and asked what they could do to keep me. I said "I don't know. You tell me what you can do for me. I want the same channels I have now (Choice Xtra) and I want it to be as cheap as it's going to be if I cut the cord. If you can give me that I'll consider staying".

Long story short.... She gave me the Choice Xtra package for what's going to be $56 a month (with tax and fees). She threw in free NFL Sunday Ticket, HBO, and she's sending me a $200 prepaid gift card. All of this AND I didn't have to sign another contract. I didn't have to extend my contract either. I have a year left.

I thought I scored a sweet deal.
 
I agree that they stream everything but I disagree that they will be the main cord cutters. Were they ever connected and billed to begin with?

They may have been watching but I doubt they were paying.

Well they won't be actual "cord cutters" in the truest sense of the word, but younger people won't even get cable to begin with which is even worse if you're a cable company. They will really struggle to gain new customers, similar to how AT&T and others almost died off when new customers entering the market didn't see a need for a landline telephone.
 
When I graduated college in 2004 and got my own place, my parents thought I was crazy for not having a landline telephone. I told them I didn't see the point when I had my cell phone with me all the time.

I see this new crop of kids to be the main cord cutters. They stream everything from Netflix to twitch to PlayStation Vue. They have no interest or need for cable TV.

I still have directv because I f'ing LOVE the NFL Sunday ticket. It murders 17 Sundays of my life every single year and I got my wife hooked too thanks to fantasy football.

NFL Sunday Ticket is available via a channel on the Roku streaming player. You need either a Direct TV account with NFL Sunday Ticket or you need a NFL SUNDAY TICKET MAX or NFLSUNDAYTICKET.TV subscription.

Welp, I'm going to be going down that same path when I can find enough time to do it. I can stream all the stuff my kids watch and we already have Netflix, Hulu and Prime. I was thinking I would hold my ground when I canceled DirecTV but that's a sweet deal you got. ;)

I think it goes to show how much they are hurting. They are desperate to keep people. I was 100% ready to cut the cord. I didn't expect them to go that low, but when they did it was a no brainer. Especially with my WIFI. It works great sometimes and then others it's unreliable. That would have pissed me off during a Hawkeye game if streaming were my only option.

You can get the NFL app on Roku or Apple TV and I think it cost like $75, but you can watch any game in full immediately after it is over. Yeah you have to wait until it is over, but it is the complete game and you can watch it with all the commercials or the abbreviated game without commercials. You can watch past season games also or games earlier in the same season. That is the way I watch my team now. I get stuff done on Sunday afternoons and watch the game Sunday night in about 45 minutes time.
 
Sorry, but really watching the game means sitting through all the commercials and timeouts and the half time show with the chunky guys making bad jokes and over laughing at each others bad jokes.

Is it your WiFi that's flakey? Or your Internet connection? If it's just your Wifi, then run an Ethernet cable to your TV. Most have an Ethernet jack in the back. Wired connections are always more stable than wireless.

You got your entire bill for only $56? This includes DVR $10 per month, HD service $10 per month, regional sports fee (which is BS for $7 per month) and $7 additional fee for each TV? If so, that is incredible. Once my 2 year contract ends, I need to do something because I am paying $140 per month without any of the premium movie channels.

My wife is a Graphic Designer so she needs to have a consistent connection. Which means sometimes the quality suffers in the basement. So I think the answer to your question would be it's the WiFi that's flakey, but that's my limited knowledge on the subject. I bought a signal extender on Amazon to see if that would help, but it doesn't do a lot of good.

Something like this is where the people from Best Buy are probably worth having them come and set up. There are usually two different bands for wifi and one is better for streaming video than the other but it doesn't broadcast as far or as well so they could tell you. When I set ours up I at the time bought a top of the line router for the basement and later an extender for upstairs particularly for the frequency needed for streaming video. Seems to work well in our house. Have thought about upgrading the router as they seem to keep coming out with better ones.
