Jon Miller is a hero

Message boards may have no impact, but I believe (some) sports writers can take the fanbase "temperature" from reading them. It might give more than one of them the backbone to say what needs to be said. The business model at scout and rivals really doesn't allow for the full venting process to reveal itself. I know my fellow fans are desperate for good news and in the months ahead there will be clashes between the "pessimists" and the "optimists" (that's me, I think we can do better).

But Jon Miller has shown himself to the "true" fan because he knows what is best for the kids is to have the coaching which will maximize wins. The kids are here for wins. The fans are here for wins. The TV cameras are here for wins. The program is here for wins. All that other stuff is secondary. But sadly Barta/Mason seem to think it is primary. I hope the media can get to both of them.

Wait, what? First Dave Schwartz is a great journalist and now Jon Miller is a hero and should be the voice for all Iowa fans? One dude's never worn a jock in his life and the other dude's a propane salesman in Oklahoma that has a website on the side. Something funny is going on here.

But I can tell you, as one of Jon's customers, that he is a great propane salesman, with an incredible ability to analyze the market and give his customers sound information and recommendations. That said, having met Jon personally, he takes what he does here at HN very seriously and while he doesn't pretend to be the voice for all Hawk fans, he has done a great job over the past several years in "taking the temperature" of the fan base and reporting that temperature as honestly and openly as possible.

Agree with you alex....I just hope that the other mainstream writers all see Schwartz's column and it shames them in some way....it should.

I don't know about Schwartz. The weekly bb player rankings is weak. This article was well-written with a lot of good points. No one needs to be wearing a jock or be a jock to write an opinion.

It doesn't matter what Miller is doing now; it doesn't matter where he is doing it from. I don't understand why throwing Miller under the bus has anything to do with the poster calling him a hero. He's the one you should be firing against without using Miller.

Miller, like a lot of other fans, was late to the KF de-pantsing party. And he has admitted that. The point is, he's doing it now.

It's 41 degrees in Tulsa right now, not bad!

I'm really stupid so can someone explain to me what the weather has to do with anything?

Not throwing anyone under the bus. Just saying that someone that is not close to the program and didnt even go to school there is not the best person to be touted a "hero", etc. Jumping off the Ferentz bandwagon as late as he did is very "common fan-like". Not that there's anything wrong with that. I mean heck, I just wrote in my political blog last week that I think Ernst has a real shot to beat Braley. Many pundits have called me their hero since I wrote that piece as well.

I'll try. When it's cold, Jon's a good propane salesman, just likeFerentz is a good coach when he has 4 and 5 star players. Heck, when I get in enough foreign exchange students, I'm a helluva mathetes coach.

Just a guess, though.

PC - I assume you are being more than a bit sarcastic considering Kirk's smug answer to Morehouse's question yesterday regarding the "temperature" surrounding the program.

True enough. But someone not close to the program and didn't even go to school there isn't the one who called himself a hero so what does bringing Miller's current job/geographical location have to do with not calling him a hero and making him the subject matter.

But someone that would be close to the program and did even to go school there wouldn't be a hero anyway. Kinda devalues the definition.

You have a political blog?

Lionhawk, you are also in the Tulsa area? I'm in Owasso.

Sure was. So by calling myself really stupid....

Jon uses the Bill Clinton Method:

1) Insert thumb in mouth, salivate freely
2) Hold up thumb to see direction of wind
3) Proceed appropriately

<<The point is, he's doing it now>>

Woo hoo. 50,000 Germans jumped on the bandwagon, too...in 1940. And jumped back off a few years later.

There is nothing "heroic" about what Jon or Schwartz have said or written.

So you write a political blog, coach mathletes, and have a serious case of internet tough guy. Got it.
