Jok

I think allot of people had their minds made up that he was a great player well before he played a game.

Reminds me of Brandon whegher that way.

I don't think that is neccesarily the case. I think we see guys like Josh O and Clemmons playing ahead of him and rightfully so but are currently struggling with their game. Either these guys need to step up their play or we need to take their minutes away or give Jok a shot.

That's just my take.

PJ will see more minutes once he improves his defense and becomes a better passer. Until then he will see limited minutes at best.

I could agree with you if you said he will get minutes when he starts actually passing the ball. I don't think skill level when it comes to passing is keeping him on the bench.

There's nothing wrong for a Freshman to sit and watch, and continue to work hard in practice....his time will come...

Shoud he have redshirted?

No. JO was an unknown with his injury and a RS candidate. That alone is reason enough to play him. One more injury to a guard and we're extremely short handed. He had to get some experience against those softer teams none of us want to play...but have to play for just this reason. IMO

Jok will get some minutes against Northwestern and against other lesser teams. I doubt he'll get a whole lot of minutes in road games though.

To all of you who says he needs to smooth out the rough edges, learn a complete team game, simply "get better", etc (which I agree with),....how does one do that if not playing in meaningful games?

By burning a shirt to play in all the garbage games?
While sitting for all but 4 minutes in two league games?
What did OGs give us last night other than one nice assist? Not much.

Dunno...I think he needs to get out there when the arrows are flying.

I cant agree Seth. We cant afford to give him many more crunch time minutes. We need to win now, not next year.

I'm not saying Jok shouldn't play. However, I don't think last night was the place for him to get experience. Jok will get some minutes Thursday. He will get minutes in other games and perhaps in some critical situations as the season progresses...maybe shooting free throws at the end of games eventually.

This team has enough talent to make a serious NCAA run. This is per people with no vested interest in the Hawks whatsoever. Jok isn't going to RS and he shouldn't be in any game just for the sake of getting him some experience. Forget next year and the year after that. I have big plans for this season.

Big Pete's time will come. I'm a Jok fan but I'm an Iowa fan 1st.

Ogelsby gave us No turnovers, no rushed bad shots which are basically turnovers, and no bad defense.

Jok doesn't know how to play good basketball at this level yet, you do learn first by playing against lesser opponents.

We need more than that from Josh. He's a shooting guard and is on the floor to hit shots but he can't even get them off. In his defense, Clemmons has been just as bad. I don't look for AC to be a scorer cuz that's not his game but he's got to do a better job of taking care of the ball and getting guys like Josh opportunities to score.

College basketball is a guards game yet we have two bench players who aren't contributing and it's really hurting.

Yes, yes, OGs wasn't playing, but, once B1G started:

4 mins vs Nebby
0 mins vs Wisky

I don't think OGs is taking all of his minutes.

From 14.5 mins/game before B1G to two.

Any thoughts as to what's going on?

Added: Actually, PJ didn't get many minutes against ISU, ND or Nova. Maybe it's the "he's not ready for the big time" syndrome?

7 mins vs NU
0 mins vs OSU

Why didn't we redshirt him?

Not unlike our position with Olesani, I think we'll be kicking ourselves in 3 years.

We needed him when Josh was hurt. With Josh's injury we were a short bench at the guard position.

In this day and age you don't redshirt guards. You either play right away or plan to get recruited over.

This. All this talk of redshirting is just stupid. You don't redshirt a guy like Peter Jok. You give him 250 minutes as a Freshman and then use every second of that experience to coach him about what he needs to change to become great. What do you think Peter would have gained from sitting on the bench this year?

Redshirts are for exceptional cases only - injuries and projects. You have a guy with a brain, a body and some talent...you give him as much minutes as you can and let them marinate for 6 months going into their sophomore year.

This has the been the drill since before the three point line, guys.

If you say he's going to benefit more by playing in garbage time for the next two months, than not at all, OK. Guess I stand corrected.

he'll see time against PSU, and then the second time around with NW and Nebby

all the tools, just needs to work on shot selection and court awareness

he'll be all right, and redshirting would have been a mistake

Seriously, take a look around some good teams from past years and you'll find plenty of players who didn't do much their freshman years. Kirk does it all the time in football. They get a feel for the game and they are better for it the next season.

Also, there are should be several opportunities before the end of the season to get Jok some playing time. At Wisconsin and Ohio State aren't the best learning/teaching environments.
