Jok - he gone

You people who think that this is just a couple of minor moped related incidents being blown out of proportion are missing the point entirely. P.J. was charged with an OWI and had his driving priveleges suspended. While in the process of trying to obtain a deferred judgement on that infraction he continued to drive without a license and got caught doing it. His opportunity for a deferment on the OWI charge is gone and his initial 6 month loss of license will become a minimum of 12 months. He has real potential for serving some jail time.

It's too bad that this isn't just a couple tickets for moped related safety equipment violations. It's way more than that.....

No chance of jail time with no priors.

I got busted driving while barred after an owi and they didn't even make me pay the fine for driving while barred and I had priors.

Nobdy gives a chit If a kid was driving a moped.

So, it's ok to ride a moped on the street when legally impaired or without proper tail light and no license? Yeah, I'd want my kid doing those things. People wouldn't be making excuses for the idiot if he was in an accident and was hurt or killed or a passenger cracked their head open. .

Have to wonder if this Valley Nancy will get a 3rd strike.

Yeah, I'm sure you'd make your 19 year old drop out of college, give up his scholarship for getting cracked on a moped......

This. It's not that people are saying it's totally cool what Jok has done recently, or that this behavior should be encouraged. It's that the punishment isn't, and shouldn't be, all or nothing. Just because we don't line him up against a wall and shoot him, doesn't mean we think he should be let off with zero consequences.

I had to wade through all the 'is it justified??', 'boy, Jok is sure dumb' posts to find if my post is a SIAP..

I can't get that time back..ever.

Is it possible Jok can be transported to and from school, if needed, by a, I don't know, graduate assistant ? To and from the gym, if needed, by a graduate assistant? Girlfriend? Hawkeye fan? You know, so he won't get into more trouble?

Really silly post. It was a moped capable of reaching 35 MPH not a multiple ton vehicle or boat. There was no passenger. Yes if something had happened we all would be saddened and wish it would not have happened but given the mode of transport it would have been him only.

This should be one strike to me and not treated like a felony. There are a lot worse things than this that deserve severe punishment.

This type of thing gives critics and those who want to elevate their own status the perfect opportunity to cast judgement on others.

My suggestion to you is to remain in your in ground bunker.

It's not that serious of a 2nd charge, but the DUI certainly was, moped or not. It's a motorized vehicle and is a pretty serious offense. The 2nd charge, is just bad judgement, but it forced Fran's hand to punish him. I am sure Fran is managing this behind the scenes with the up most caution. He's likely seriously disappointed in Jok but at the same time, still very supportive and telling him to hang with it and work hard and he will be a big part of the team this fall and moving forward.

No surprise. IC cops are especially sensitive to shenanigans by students. They live for it.

IC is exactly the wrong place to be farting around, tempting fate. Especially in the summer when IC cops have much less to do.

So lets say "anyone" else was riding a moped and ran a stop light (impaired or not) but let's say impaired to stay consistent. Let's further suppose that your wife, or husband, or father or mom, brother or sister, reacted to avoid hitting the moped rider and hit a telephone pole and was killed. Would that change it from being a silly post?

Too often we think in terms of the single person involved in the incident and forget about how a single person's actions could drastically affect someone else.

Has anyone here ever seen or heard of a fatal, single-car accident occurring at 30mph? Excluding stuff like veering off an exit ramp and rolling down a steep incline.

From the Safe Speed Organization:

We've calculated the average impact speed required to kill 1 in 125 drivers is 21.21mphPerhaps you're worried that Joksch's equation is unreliable below about 30 mph? Let's see how many would have died at 30 mph:

  • probability = (30/71)4 = 0.031875

  • 0.031875 * (1,164+13,2318+12,555) = 4,655.
We've calculated that at an average impact speed of 30 mph, 4,655 drivers would die. This is about 4 times the number who do die, so we can see clearly that the average impact speed is significantly less than 30 mph.

Was he even on the street? He could've been on a bike lane or sidewalk
