Jok An All-American

I agree, and there is no shortage of players that shoot better their last two years than their Fr. So years. I am not claiming to be a expert but Fran is and he seems to belive in the kid. If his shooting does come around the 2 spot is going to get pretty crowded next year. If Utoff is as good as billed the 3 will be hard to break into. Im just saying Im not sure where Joks Min are going to come from

I think Ogelsby will be a different shooter next year. I base that on ONE thing only. Frans belief in him

If he needed a 3 point shooter what were Fran's other options last year? He already had Gesell and Marble on the court typically with White and McCabe. Who else was he going to go to? Clemmons was probably his only other option. So we don't know how much was "Fran's belief in him" and how much was lack of options

Next year he has Uthoff and Jok as alternatives as well as another year of Clemmons development. So next year will be a better indicator of how strongly Fran believes Oglesby is a good shooter.

I hope so, but he's been a terrible shooter in the B10 for two years now. I think he is who he is at this point.

Oglesby shot 37% from the arc as a frosh...that is more than respectable.
If he can shoot 37% from the arc the next two years, he will be a significant contributor to the Hawks success.

Point well taken. But he was very vocal about. but like you said next year should tell the tale. Sure is nice to have a battle for playing time

Well, I doubt that Coach McCaffery would continually speak so highly of his shooting ability unless there was a real basis to do so.

I believe 11 guys are all going to be battling for minutes. The only guy I see as not being firmly in the mix for significant (10+) minutes per game is Meyer.

Fran could face an interesting situation between loyalty to the guys that started the turn around (Basabe, McCabe, and Oglesby (first significant recruiting commitment after becoming coach)) and the newcomers Uthoff and Jok.

Fran has been known to use the media to deliver messages to players. In this case he may have been overstating is "confidence" in Oglesby in an attempt to pump the kid up. I don't doubt Oglesby can shoot the 3 in practice or shooting drills but often that is significantly different that in games.

Very interesting. All three of those guys will be in a battle for playing time and I could see how all three could lose that battle. ( not saying they will ). Sr leadership is important. Fran will have his work cut out for him just keeping everyones head right

I think that could be Fran's biggest challenge this year -- keeping team chemistry right if guys who have been in the program a few years minutes/roles are decreased.

As a freshman in B10 play, Oglesby was 17/59 from 3, 29%, that also included a 6/8 game against Indiana, without that one game he was 11/51 or 22%.

As a sophomore in B10 play, Oglesby shot 19/81 from 3, 23%.

I don't really care how well he can shoot against South Carolina St or Campbell. He has a pretty large sample size showing he's about a 25% 3 point shooter against B10 teams.

Some of those guys are real good but Worley should have been more like top-1000.

Nevertheless, he was a four-star with offers from Kansas and Michigan State.

He's also our 33rd all-time scorer and member of the 1,000 point club, but I guess that's besides the point.

I think Gesell's shot will fall with more consistency this year. Horner shot just under 28% as a freshman, and shot over 40% the next two years. Mike reminds me of Horner in a lot of ways, and I do think we'll see a similar improvement in outside shooting.

Beyond the fact that they're scoring point guards, how so? I don't see a lot of Jeff in Mike to be honest.

I have no doubt that JO is a great shooter in practice (where everyone wants him to do well) or against lesser teams that don't guard him as well. My opinion is that he just doesn't get his shot off quick enough for tough competition. Based on your stats hawkfan33, JO would be making MAJOR improvement to shoot 33% vs B1G level competition. That's good enough to be a 3pt shooter off the bench but, unless you're a coach with no other options, not the primary shooter. Next year Fran will have more options.

Does anyone know how to change the name of this thread from "Jok an All-American" to "Just another thread discussing Oglesby's 3 point shooting?"

The only reason we're talking about JO's shooting is that some people think that he's going to be a better shooter than Jok this year. I don't think so. Not that I wouldn't want JO to radically improve, I just don't think he's going to shoot better than Jok. And that will say something about who gets more playing time.

I dont know anything about Jok except what I read on here. He may be as good a shooter as Ray Allen for all I know. But remember he is shooting zero % in the BT right now. Does anyone have the stats on how Gatens shot his first two years.

But JO plays some pretty decent defense(in my opinion). So the question will be: who plays better defense, Jok or JO?

I agree and he plays a pretty good all around game. Has 2 years of experince. All Im saying is if Jok takes his min. he is going to be a good player. Will belive it when I see it
