John Groce

Was it just me or was John Groce the unofficial 6th man on the court for much of the game today? In particular, he was inside the 3pt line when Oglesby was running under the hoop with a couple of screens. What is the rule with coaches and how much they can run onto the court during the game?

Really wish Fran had put Fran in with the express purpose of clobbering Groce on the court. Not to hurt him (necessarily) but to draw attention to the way Groce unfairly impedes opponents.

Fran would have been ejected if he was doing what Groce was doing. I am pretty sure he learned it from the Steeler's coach

I think there was a play in the first half where Gesell received a pass right on the wing and groce was literally a foot away from him about four feet on the court. He took a step back when the pass got there but it looked like he was yelling something as he shot it.

The other thing I have noticed the past two games--Fran doesn't work the refs very hard throughout the game. When Fran finds something grossly unjust, he erupts + goes big; but the consistent working of the refs just isn't there. In the Michigan State game, literally Izzo was talking to the refs on every Iowa free throw, on the way into and out of the locker room--it's as if Izzo picks a couple of things and hammers them home all game so the refs pay attention to the points of interest he's focused on. Today, Groce was just in his own little world being a cheerleader / 6th man and Fran wasn't giving it to the refs about him at all (from what I saw on the TV). Even more, the commentators didn't criticize Groce at all.

Groce willed that team back from a 21 point deficit. Time out use in first half, screaming and encouraging his players at different times, getting after stripes. All props.

Except for being on the floor. It is stupid what groce and others do being on the floor when game is on.

John Wooden didnt have to do this when he won 10 championships cuz he already had his team prepared.

I would like to see a coach suspended a game without pay for being on the court.

Agreed.

However, Wooden was unique. No one is John Wooden. Just as important, Wooden coached players in a different era. Young people today need more cheerleading.

B1G has gotten players under control. Now need to get coaches under control. Leave the box while the ball is in play should be automatic T.

Groce and Crean both have to do this to give the appearance of coaching. Since they don't really run any offense or manage games well this is their version of "in game coaching."

According to another thread calling out Fran I think Groce has severe anger management problems which need to be addressed before he goes home and kills his entire family.

John Wooden had his team prepared? Maybe, but he also had the very best players by a wide margin. Easy to be relaxed on the sideline with you have Lew Alcindor and Bill Walton.
