John Groce

John Wooden had his team prepared? Maybe, but he also had the very best players by a wide margin. Easy to be relaxed on the sideline with you have Lew Alcindor and Bill Walton.

When you got Sam Gilbert doing all the dirty work it's easy to be relaxed.

Groce is a spaz, yelling and throwing your arms in the air when the other team is shooting a three. Straight bush league crap, the guy needs to start taking his ritalin pills before the game and act like a coach not an 18 year old freshman.

The other thing I have noticed the past two games--Fran doesn't work the refs very hard throughout the game. When Fran finds something grossly unjust, he erupts + goes big; but the consistent working of the refs just isn't there. In the Michigan State game, literally Izzo was talking to the refs on every Iowa free throw, on the way into and out of the locker room--it's as if Izzo picks a couple of things and hammers them home all game so the refs pay attention to the points of interest he's focused on. Today, Groce was just in his own little world being a cheerleader / 6th man and Fran wasn't giving it to the refs about him at all (from what I saw on the TV). Even more, the commentators didn't criticize Groce at all.

I don't really see anything wrong with that...I know from even playing back in high school...our coaches would notice the other team constantly doing something on film...and would point it out to the refs from the very start of the game...it's all part of game planning. For instance when Wisconsin a few years ago would throw the ball after it goes through basket to delay the fast break...that's something the coaches should have been talking to the refs about from the first tip.

It's just that Fran has two voices when talking to an official...not talking at all...or...Mt. Mccaffery erupting. He honestly needs to look at how: Matta, Izzo, Ryan, etc "work" officials...they hardly ever explode like Fran does...it comes off as "whiny" but they don't give up free points.

Was it just me or was John Groce the unofficial 6th man on the court for much of the game today? In particular, he was inside the 3pt line when Oglesby was running under the hoop with a couple of screens. What is the rule with coaches and how much they can run onto the court during the game?

I think they can go anywhere on the court as long as they don't touch an opposing team's player.

Except for Fran, who gets T'd up if he so much as foot faults out of the box.

So why don't teams have players intentionally dribble into or run into these coaches? If I was playing, I would love to be the one assigned to do that.

I agree with Sonofa that you can yell out "3 seconds" "palming" just to let the ref hear you and not really point it at the ref by calling their name. all you are doing is pointing out what the opposition is doing to break rules, hand checks, moving screens, yell it at your players like this "Uthoff you have to get by that moving screen, I dont care if he is moving get around it." and make sure the ref is right there but you are yelling at your player supposedly.

Like I said last night, next time some coach does this just run somebody into him. It would force the officials to do something. Well, you hope it would anyway. If they did not call the foul, Fran and Barta could raise hell with Delaney and have lots of proof.

Pitino at Minny is just as bad as Izzo and may actually be worse. He was several feet out on the court during the Iowa game.

I'd be surprised if they keep Groce around after next year, unless he does something stunning with the 2015 class.

has one real good kid coming in, but the two years he's had in champaign are starting to make webber look like a genius

At one point today, Crean called for two players to come off the bench and he was so far out on the court, they had to run around him, technically putting seven players on the court while the ball was in play. There has to be a rule against this, doesn't there?

There is absolutely no excuse for not telling a coach to stay off of the floor,once...a T should be the followup if he doesn't get it. This is simple, yes?

And Webber is doing okay at KSU...better than Groce at Illinois anyway.

When is his contract up? He will not be fired early after making the NCAA last year. Illinois is still paying for their last FB coach and the current FB coach could get fired. Groce is safe until his contract is up. Groce did a nice job last year keeping a team focused to make the NCAA considering a lot of those players completely quit on Webber when things got tough. Groce seems pretty smart in that he utilizes Kenpom data and other deeper defensive stats to tey to gain an edge. I listened to his coaches show a couple timea. His voice is annoying as it raspy. He seems like an OK recruiter I guess. He worked under Matta at OSU when they were dominant with Oden and Connely.. Too early to judge Groce.. Illinois fan base is dellusional if you ask me. They think they should get all top Chicago talent

Fran needs to have his players run into them...maybe something will happen then. Chambers laying on the court was classic last year.

What would be called if a player ran into a coach?

From the NCAA rule book.

"b. Coaching box. Failure to comply with the rule results in a distinct advantage
that is not within the spirit and intent of the rules. The rule is clear and concise.
The head coach or any other bench personnel may not be outside the prescribed
coaching box except when otherwise permitted by rule. After a warning, for the
first violation, a technical foul should be assessed for any subsequent infraction.

I'd love to see them initiate a rule in which coaches must remain sitting on the bench at all times during the course of play. I think this would be hillarious to watch, but not something I ever expect to see in a college game. Heard its been effective at the highschool level, but must admit I don't go to many HS games.
