Jim McElwain Calls Greg Davis Highly-Respected Offensive Mind

And Tom Izzo said Iowa was wrong to get rid of Todd Lickliter. Now, if McElwain were to say they look forward to playing Iowa because they already have their defensive game plan ready to go based on the certainty of what Iowa will run, then that would be a man bites dog story.

Davis has coached for a long time and been successful at times. For various reasons, it hasn't worked well here. I've been in record saying I don't feel like he and KF are a good match. And the OC here has to mesh with the head coach, whose philosophy guides what we do. This year, injuries have been a factor. Kittle and VandeBerg were essential to the unit with graduation losses and inexperience.

I've not been shy about communicating my dislike for GDs offense....particularly the lack of attacking the middle of the field, the reliance on horizontal passes, the overall "read and react" passing game, etc.

However, I think we also forget that just last year, we set a school record for the number of consecutive conference games scoring 30 or more points. We also lost our top WR to the NFL, our top TE to the NFL, then lost our top returning WR to a season ending injury and have been without our top 2 returning TEs for the majority of the season to injury as well. Couple that with the fact that CJB has obviously been dealing with a knee injury the entire season and the fact that we have started something like 8 or 9 offensive line combinations in 12 games. I don't know that there are too many OCs in the country that could have put together much of an offense with all of that happening.

However, with that being said, I still don't think the horizontal, read and react passing game coupled with a power running game is a good match at all. KOK, for all the flack he took, did exactly what you should do which is marry a vertical, play action passing game with a power running game. Ken's problem was that he went away from what was working entirely too much.

We need to get someone in here who truly understands the pro-style offense and can put our QB and WR/TEs in the best position to succeed by throwing seams, crosses, posts, TE waggles, etc. out of playaction.

The "we lost this guy" to graduation or the NFL are lame excuses. Every team loses 20-25% of their roster every year. That's part of the game and part of what goes into your recruiting and player development plan. If you don't have a guy ready t step in...it's on you.

Injuries..Ok They can have a big affect.. But again, they happen to every team. If you're that dependent on one guy...well, see the above.

I'll go to what we've heard Iowa QBs under KFz say before. It takes a while to learn the system, it's complicated. Hey, if your system is complicated and difficult to learn...yet the outcome is simple, predictable and more importantly...NOT very productive... something is wrong with your system.

Injuries and graduation do happen to every team....but when you get the double whammy at one or two positions, unless you're Alabama or OSU, you're going to struggle somewhat. Look, I'm not making excuses at all, but look around the country and there are plenty of examples of programs better and more established than us that have struggled when injuries hit.

But like I said, I still would rather have a simpler offense that attacked the middle of the field and utilized play action.

Two of the three worst offenses I have ever seen have been with Greg Davis running the offensive show.

2007 -- This is on KF who rather than adapt to a duel threat 5'6" QB, made him into a pocket passer and we had no shot. Didn't help the OL couldn't pass block (seems to be a theme most years)

2012/2016 -- What is so sad about these two years, is that they happened with Senior QBs!!!!

2013/2014 were not much better. Those were the years of the check down

I'm with everyone else. This read/react system for the WR just doesn't work here at Iowa. Very few figure it out, and we can't move the ball. Last year we were better, but I think CJ's magic on 3rd down masked a lot of issues.

He has to go after this year. You cannot reward such horrible stats, and the offense cost us the division. again.
