Jestin Jacobs Sticks with Iowa, Turns Down Home-State Buckeyes

I agree with that. NFL is such a passing league you’re going to have your nickel corner out there on most downs. It’s like this other thread that was started claiming Iowa is a 4-2-5 now. It’s simply about matching up personnel with your opponent, not exactly rocket science IMO.
This is why Desmond King is as effective as he is. Even in college as our number 1 CB, in Nickel packages Parker would slide him inside to the slot and put Josh Jackson out wide.

Des is great at covering slot guys and it's the reason he's carved himself a great role in SD.

Anyone who is part of the Bill Parcells tree will run at least some 3-4. Wade Phillips associates as well. Dom Capers, as mentioned, likes the 3-4. I'm sure there are others who slip my mind at the moment.

Situational?
The only situation where Iowa should run the 3-3-5 is the situation in which we are trying to lose. That was Norm's nickel package for a long time and if you've ever sat in the stands and seen guys like Juice Williams shred it because we have no pass rush you will abandon the notion of even situationally using it.

Ah but in order to run it, you have to have a nt that has to be double teamed. Which absolutely can kill it in a 4 man front. I don't care what package you think you want to run a 4-3-4 a 4-2-5 or a 3-3-5 you had better have the personnel to do it if that's how you are going to play it.
This year Wisconsin tanked after losing their main nt. Case in point.

I liked Don James defense when he was at Washington. He would put 11 guys in the box and send an extra pass rusher every time. You just didnt know if it was a safety, cornerback, or outside linebacker, but one was always coming and you didnt know from where. As a QB, you also had to try and figure out who was covering who. But you didnt have much time because you knew someone was coming from somewhere every down. The man was a defensive genius!

Yeah, good point. To run a good 3-4, you need a really good NT and at least one dominant pass rusher at LB or DE.

Personnel. You try that with Iowa's secondary and you're gonna give up a 75 yard TD every third play.

How long until he is downgraded to a 3 star?
Too late. For OSU to have been all in trying to get him they can't do that now. 5 months ago or so oh heck yeah that's pretty much how it goes. But this kid is strait up legit. Tall, long fast. Should easily put on 20-25 more Lbs of muscle. Doyle and Parker can't wait for him to get to campus

I think this. Watching Martinez from Nebraska scrambling around with A. Nelson and AJE trying to contain him scared me to death. For certain teams and certain situations, I would definitely like to see some of those spare (and fresh-legged) LBs put to use.
In a couple years I could see Mr. Jacobs assigned to stick to guys like Martinez like chrome on a trailer hitch. Happy to hear he's a Hawk.

Thats why Don James recruited speed at those positions. Speed was imperative in not only covering the receivers, but also getting to the QB. He created a situation where the QB had to make quick decisions on every play. Btw, I never stated that Iowa should use his system, but if they did happen to recruit speed, it would be an option. Just bringing something new to the table in the B1G, it would take them 1-2 yrs. before someone figured out a way to stop it. By then, you might of won a few extra games you normally wouldnt. Also gives the opponents offense just one more thing to worry about and prepare for. Just saying, Don James was brilliant.

The 3-4 is not going out of style in the NFL.

The zone blitz concept based off the 3-4 is. With quarterbacks getting rid of the ball so fast it counteracts all that. Brady and Brees love it when they know where the pressure is coming from and they kill you with the short passing game.
