Jayden McDonald in the portal

What’s the typical way that media people find out a recruit has entered the portal? Since it’s not public info, is it usually an anonymous coach sees it and leaks it, or is it leaked from within the athletic dept, etc? Obviously I’m talking about cases where the player or his parents don’t announce it.

The 247 network has access to the transfer portal, which is intended for coaches only.

Not sure the entry point. Could be anywhere in the country with with just one coach willing to give it up.

I reached out to his mom. We’ll see if she responds.

Seth Wallace was laying into this kid continuously at Kids Day. He did not seem to be receiving it well, which caught the eye of some of us in the media.

As others have mentioned, there’s a logjam at LB with the scheme change. I’d imagine there will be more hitting the road.
Hitting the road normal in the current state of high level college FB now, nearly everyone wanting to play in the NFL, thinking they belong in the NFL, not enough slots to play for everyone. Nothing wrong with following a dream, some do come true.

Sometimes that can be a sign that a coach really thinks you have potential, though. It's often better to get a talking to than to be ignored.

Agree if you are in the 1 or 2 deeps. But when buried down the depth chart, young guys nowadays don't see it like that. In his mind he's prob thinking "Man, I'm not gunna play and all I do is get yelled at all practice."

Interesting how once a kid decides to transfer then we didn't need him, but before that he was going to be a stud. Same with Martin. It was good riddance once he went to Michigan, but now that he's back oh we have to have him on the field.

I don't recall anyone saying good riddance to Martin. I was disappointed he chose UM, but wasn't angry at him.

Very few end up playing at for a P5 conference. A pretty good number end up on G5 rosters. Just as many on end up on FCS and Div II teams. The odds of eventually starting at the respective level are about 50/50 overall.

They want to play somewhere. They have an opportunity to advance their degree on scholarship somewhere.

Nothing wrong with following a dream, I also wonder how many programs subtly or not "encourage" scholarship holders to move on to open up a slot for the next recruit.

I'm sure it happens with a fair amount of frequency. In this day and age, it isn't really necessary though. Just let the athlete know where he stands.

Troy is rapidly becoming a southern version of North Dakota State. They are a team that the power conferences do not want to tangle with. There is plenty of regional talent available down there even after the big boys have picked through what they want.

Interesting how once a kid plays in the NFL you declare him a playmaker and that we will sorely miss him. Or that Goodson is already better than any RB we have. But they are never playmakers when they are here, because you declare every year that we don't have any. And you have already annointed Gil Coan of Wisconsin as a savior. How can you possibly predict that he will have those little intangibles to win games, like Hornibrook had, when he has not even had a full circuit through the league.

People can rip of Hornibrook all they want. But he knew how to beat Iowa and how to win bowl games.

Are there people saying Goodson is the team's best RB already?

Not being a smart-ass, just wondering where that's coming from.

The poster I replied to has a long history of "we have no playmakers" posts.

As for Goodson in particular I will estimate conservatively that there a half a dozen posts on old threads saying that Goodson is the home run hitter we have lacked since Wadley and that our current backs are competent at best and lack the vision to be big play threats.

I don't know if he watches the games or not but I thought Sargeant improved tremdously as the year went on. And IKM was on the verge before his ankle and concussion derailed his season. And Young, Geil and yes Goodson will all be in the mix as well.

I haven't heard a thing about Geil or Samson Evans, other than Geil not being involved in team activities this summer (I think he is back with the team now). Both sounded like very impressive young men, but I am getting the feeling they are not going to find opportunities at RB. I wonder if there are any possible position changes for either?

Both are similar size (Geil is 6', 215lbs, Evans is 6', 210lbs), and both played LB in high school (Geil was RB, Evans was QB). I wonder if either could make a Sutton Smith-like change, and become a pass-rushing DE?

Alternately, I wonder if either could bulk up to fullback? They would offer interesting skill sets at that position.

Geil and Evans were not invited to August camp. They were not scheduled to be back in practice until the first day of school.

That's not a death sentence for Iowa careers, but it's also not a good sign.

Iowa brought in two backs in the '19 class and have received verbals from two more in '20.

Ah, OK. Gotcha. I was wondering if that was being reported by people in the Iowa media.

I would be surprised if either of the freshmen cracks the Top 3 this season. To me, Sargent, Young and IKM are on another level right now. The others will need time for the game to slow down.

I wonder what Troy thinks of his tweet insinuating having to commit to Troy is like a punch in the face?
