James Vandenberger = Rothlisberger ??

I remember Rothlisberger almost beat us with an inferior team when he played for Ohio.

He was a very highly touted QB even at that point. I remember the anticipation of playing Miami of Ohio, even for a preconference game from a lower division team. Those couple of years were good for that Miami team & were quite formidible. I believe they went on to play in some bowl at the end of the year.

Vandy has not shown much in the way of pocket presence. In fact, he has been brutal in that department.

His pocket presence was much better in limited reps in '10 than he was in '09. It WAS brutal in those starts ... however, that was also back when he was a RS FR! He's going to be a JR in '11.

Vandenberg is more mobile than you're giving him credit. That said ... Big Ben was a lot more like Nathan Chandler (i.e. he's huge) ... only much better.

As I see it, Vandenberg is much like an NFL-sized version of Drew Tate ... only also with many of the positive attributes of Stanzi (the benefit of being mentored by the Manzi).

If JV = Drew Tate + Stanzi, then Iowa will win the B1G Championship. No if's, and's or but's, we will win. That is with a beat up and injured defense, just like last year.

Homer, I do like your comparison there in a way. JV seems much more able to read the defense and find the secondary targets like Drew Tate, something that Stanzi simply could not do (see 4 straight sacks verse Northwestern). That said, JV does not seem to be nearly as difficult for a defender to capture as Drew Tate (see Iowa @ Michigan 2006 when Drew got his head ripped off but still made a good throw). But he does seem much more escapable from the defense than Stanzi. He also seems to command the offense well, like Stanzi.

I have high expectations for JV, and I think he will acheive those expecations. But I have even higher hopes for JV, I believe they are very possible, even with KOK, but I am just not letting myself rise to that level (see 2010 season).

45 days until kickoff!

GO Hawks!

Busabus: this thread compared Vandy to Big Ben. Ben has great pocket presence, what we have of Vandy's to compare to Ben is not good. But notice I said he hasn't shown. That doesn't mean has could not have improved.

But comparing possible improvement to actual performance is a little weird.
