James Vandenberger = Rothlisberger ??

I was sitting back thinking about some attributes JV is going to bring besides with his arm. We all know he isn't going to do too much damage with his legs. He may take off here & there for an 8 yrd or so pick-up like Stanzi but is not going to look to run all too often. Iowa QB's don't usually & have not since the likes of Brad Banks.

I was trying to think of a QB that could be a comparison to JV & came up with Big Ben. I guess I was thinking JV has a nice sized solid frame as Ben. Ben is not one to run but what he gives you with his big body is a chance to buy some time to pass by shedding would be defenders. I wondered if this is kind of what JV would bring to the table. A big body & just enough footwork in the pocket to shed some defenders buying time to get a decent pass off.

It must be the middle of July! Thats the only time of the year a 1st year starter can be compared to a multiple super bowl champ/rapist

Hard to compare Big Ben to anyone because he's so unique on the field and in bar bathrooms

Vandenberg is more mobile than you're giving him credit. That said ... Big Ben was a lot more like Nathan Chandler (i.e. he's huge) ... only much better.

As I see it, Vandenberg is much like an NFL-sized version of Drew Tate ... only also with many of the positive attributes of Stanzi (the benefit of being mentored by the Manzi).

I love when people read into threads & cannot grasp what message is being said or asked. I am not comparing "results" of the two QB's, I am merely comparing one attribute that both may have in the QB position that is similar. And you are correct, it is the off-season for a couple more weeks.

Well, in reading your & Jon's replies, I must have had the thought that JV is much larger than he actually is. For some reason, I thought he was a pretty filled out guy with decent size.

But, I guess my point is that his mobility won't be used a lot for designed runs, as not usually the case with Iowa QB's. Just the pro-style they run. But, his mobility can buy him some time in the pocket which will help. On top of that, I thought he had a larger frame that could maybe help shed defenders similar to Ben, but maybe not the case, I guess.

Oh well, lets move on.

Just off the top of my head, I believe that Vandenberg is around 6-3/215.

Wienke would be the guy who arguably is a bit more like Rothlisberger ... at least size-wise.

BR is a unique talent normally you don't a teach a guy to play the position the way he does it. At this point you definitely do not want JVB trying to extend plays by hanging on to the football. KOK/KF would have a heart attack.

If you are to compare him to NFL QB(s) with similar size and attributes, Aaron Rogers is far more athletic than JVB will ever be.....I am thinking more of guy like Matt Ryan. Mobility, Size, arm strength, are very comparable to where Matt Ryan was at during his BC days.

I'm sorry, I don't get the comparison. I remember when we played Miami of Ohio when Big Ben played. The guys had Iowa defenders bouncing off of him left and right and he was throwing ropes after swatting the flies off. We were lucky to survive that game. Big Ben also has a head that requires a special helmet...no truth to the rumor they just hollow out an oak tree and put it on his head...but the dude has a huge grape on his shoulders.

JVB isn't going to have people bouncing off of him and he's Tim Dwight compared to Rothlisberger coming out of the pocket. That being said, Ben has a feel for the pocket that isn't taught...slight movements to buy time, then release the cannon.

TRJ, I'd think he may be more like Rogers than you think. I think he's a pretty athletic kid, although not as good an athlete as his mom. She's apparently a gamer.

Sorry, was just making a joke because its a pretty poor comparison

JVB is like big ben's twin, totally!!!

here are some other one's I came up with:

keenan davis = jerry rice, but keenan obviously has better hands

marcus coker = frank gore, although I think coker can read the field better and is way faster

micah hyde = an all around better shut down corner than darrelle reevis

facepalm

FAIL. Your attempt at humor is turrible, just turrible. Darrelle Reevis? Just shows how young you are. Typical frosh post.

Didn't Ben throw like 4 picks and 0 td's against us his senior year?

He left after his JR Year.

We played at home in '01 when he was a FR. He struggled, but still manage to run over/through Matt Roth.

We played 'em on the road in '02 where we pulled out a 29-24 win. In the game Ben was 33-51 for 343 yards, though he had two picks. I think that was his SO year.

We played 'em again at home in '03 and won 21-3, but not sure his stats.

Thanks. I decided to not be lazy and look it up and yes he threw 4 picks in 03.

We're remembering the game very differently. BR got his *** kicked in that game. He made some comment before that game that he went to Miami Ohio because he wanted to be a big fish in a small pond. Seemed a weird attitude for a QB so I remember enjoying seeing him scramble all over the field to avoid getting clocked.

Everyone talks about Vandy's arm...can't wait to see it. He's not huge though. Nowhere near Ben-rapist-R's size.
