My post wasn't even mostly about Varner...it was mostly about what was contained in an ISU post match press release written by their SID. He's a true believer, and I like him...its just that they do things differently up there than any other place I have seen. I have read more than 1000 press releases from a number of Universities through the years..you could blot out any terms that would give a hint as to what school it came from, and I am wagering I could spot an ISU press release 8 times out of 10.

LOL...well done HawkCP....and I do remember that episode...she was well on her way to stardom at that point...a precursor to the unreal work done in Showgirls.

The press release said that some say that he is the best in the nation. He is definitely in the running for best in the country so I don't think that it's a stretch to say that some people would say he is the best. In college wrestling you're not going to have many years that the best wrestler is unaminous. I guess I don't see anything incorrect about the release.
And Jon, I understand that ISU's press releases are very outgoing and highlight the positives in the athletic program, but I think that you are getting too used to the UofI where there seems to be no marketing department at all. The two schools do have a different approach to press releases, but I'm not sure how you can say that either is right or wrong.

Except for last year. Yeah I said it...even though Metcalf lost the NC match last year I would still say he was/should have been the unanimous choice for best wrestler in the nation...and I don't think it was close. Oh yeah...he's still wrestling.
In fact he's good enough that the kid who beat him in the NC match was considering going to play football this year instead of having to come back and get embarrassed by Metcalf...and he probably wouldn't have seen the field unless it was on special teams. A returning National Champion considering going to ride the pine for the football team instead of defending his crown.
Metcalf strikes fear into the heart of his opponents like no one has since William Wallace...except Metcalf actually can consume the English with fireballs from his eyes and bolts of lightning from his arse.
