Well, this quote comes from the official release from the Iowa State Sports Information Department...

"Who is the nation’s best collegiate wrestler? Some say Iowa State’s defending NCAA 197-pound champion and U.S. Freestyle team member Jake Varner. "

I love ISU press releases...they are the most colorful I have ever read.

PS: No, I don't think Varner is the best. I would cast my vote for Metcalf.
 




I don't care how good he is, he still has to put on that ketchup and mustard colored singlet. HAHAHAHAHA

I'm not sure how you could say that he's not close?? You can argue that he is not the best but I would love to see someone come up with 5 better college wrestlers right now! You might not like the guy but he is a GREAT wrestler!

You made it sound earlier like it was absurd to call him the best wrestler. Now you are saying that he is in the hunt? Which is it?

I am not saying Varner is the best. I don't think you can ever say a guy is the best as each weight class is different. In fact I think Iowa State was talking about his weight class as he is ranked #1 for 197 obviously, but Jon just wanted to start something

im saying he isn't the best college wrestler out there right now...the names stated are above him in my book

And that's fine. But people could argue that he is the best. He does have a case. You made it sound like it is just crazy talk

The thing about this subject is that once you narrow it down to a possible group, it is basically all opinion based. So obviously people are going to have their own picks. Iowa fans will say Metcalf or Jaybo, ISU fans will say Varner, and so on. They will never wrestle each other, as they are all different weights, so the discussion is slightly pointless.
