It is time Coach Ferentz

Its college football. Every year, every football team in America has to replace talented seniors or underclassmen who leave for the NFL or expired eligibility. Every year, good football programs have future stars waiting for their opportunity. The Hawks are no different. Maybe 2020 will be brutal, maybe some younger kids are ready to step in and make their mark on history. Look at the Freshmen that played this year. Think of the talented kids who are behind sr and jr stars. This year's team had to replace a ton of NFL talent and here we are with an opportunity to win 10 games, an improvement over last year with a much tougher schedule.

As for coach, I dont see anything close to what Fry looked like at the end of his career. KF keeps himself mentally and physically fit, and has a passion for coaching including recruiting that seems to be growing. Recruiting is on a definite upswing. Evidence that 7-8 Freshmen contributed GREATLY to an 8-10 win season that could have easily been 10-12 wins. There is a ton more younger talent here and on the way as well. Perhaps next year looks tough, but 8-9 win floor is still the expectation. That's motivation to see it through for coach.

How many of you would retire at 50-55 if you could. Some of you love what you do or might get bored, but I'd hope most of us would be off doing fun things or nothing if it was possible. KF can easily do that, but here he is coaching in his 60's and probably to 70+ because he has a passion for it, loves the community and his players and has pride in the program. Being physically and mentally able plays a big part. There is no reason to quit and no signs of diminishing returns.

You can be frustrated with the method at times but he is still delivering winning football to Iowa fans year in and year out (see Nebraska, Illinois, Minnesota, Purdue, Iowa State, Kansas, Maryland, Indiana, Rutgers, USC, UCLA, Miami). Some have occasional streaks or seasons but none or few as consistent as Iowa the past 10 yrs (sure argue USC). The program is on the rise.

I will have to try to listen to KF's post Minny news conference. But I think he stays another 4-5 years.

Alvarez did great and he gave himself the other job as AD. John Madden became one of the top Sunday NFL stars after coaching and probably made better money on air at least after a few years.
Madden, even by 1970's standards, got burned out by the grind. He talks about how he felt he had no off-season after winning the Super Bowl, then the Atkinson-Swann/Tatum-Stingley incidents occurred.

It's interesting because Bobby Knight had an opportunity at almost the same time as John Madden to leave coaching behind and go into TV, and for more money for what coaches were making then. When CBS bought college basketball rights from NBC in a landmark 1981 deal they were willing to make Knight their #1 basketball man and even give him scheduling control. Knight ultimately decided he couldn't leave coaching behind, partially because it was always his dream to coaxh an Olympic team, which he did in 1984.

Madden got numerous offers to return to coaching, but he was adamant that he was DONE. Cindy Alvarez thought Barry would return to coaching after a break, but when Barry settled in as AD there was no way he was returning unless he got the dual role somewhere. Bill Cowher left coaching at a relatively young age and has resisted several temptations to come back. Urb, of course has come back after a break, and probably will again. There is speculation that Bobby Stoops will come back as well.

Anyone that wants Kirk gone is an idiot and when you get your wish you will regret it. How soon we forget what happened to Hawkeye BB. This is IOWA and our football program (and coach) is well respected and in great shape. He has earned the right to go out on his own terms and has displayed that he is not the type of person that will put himself above others. He will know when it is best for the program to step aside.

I always wonder how old these geniuses are that want him gone because he is "getting old". I am the same age as he is and can work circles around a lot of guys 20 years younger. I own my own business and just started another one. I enjoy working. Retire? And do what? Sit on my ass and (really) get old? No thanks.

We’ve had two coaches over the last 40 years

that’s not normal.

A lot of people worry about the next coach being crap, or being so good they leave after a few seasons....well that’s literally 99% of college football teams

It’s so improbable for Iowa to become a Rutgers or Maryland due to our OOC schedule and the fact that we play Rutgers/Maryland

so more than likely if we get a crappy coach, we go 6-8 wins a year

if we get someone who lights the world on fire how much fun would that be!!?!?

It’s like people expect a coach to stick around for 20 years for the program to be in good standing

I laughed when I read this. Not that I don't agree with it, I do. Just kinda ironic, because Iowa is literally the only the B1G team that won't play Rutgers or Maryland next year. Iowa is going to have to earn it in 2020.

It's the old saying. If you love what you do, it's not really work. Kudos for doing what you enjoy. Just remember that coaching major college football is pretty demanding stuff that has burned out Hall of Fame level coaches time and again. It's probably a little more demanding than running a typical business. The fact that Kirk's recruiting has been on the uptick indicates that he still loves the job and can still do it consistently well. But he gets more and more emotional each year with his big wins and is probably sensing the end in sight.

For those that think it would be "easy" to replace KF, great. For those that want him to stay, cool. But for me, it's not about the coaches or players, it's about the utterly embarrassing "fans".

It scares the crap out of me when I realize some of you cretins drive, vote, and even worse, procreate. To paraphrase Nigel Tufnel, "Quite fearful, actually".

Watching poor Nigel try to make a sandwich with the pre concert backstage buffet was priceless.

Dont forget that some of us cretins also live where it can snow from early October to early May and bottom out at thirty degrees below zero in the winter:):):)

This thing about Fry at the end is an old narrative. KF was dried up about 5 years ago I guess. Can none of you remember the recruiting HF did late. For crying out loud, he was replaced by a guy who only had what 3 years at 1AA and didn't do very well at that? They hired an inexperienced guy with a losing record.

Yeah, but at least Stoops wanted the job and the sheer ineptitude of the administration left us with Kirk. I don't know who will want us if we tank again at the end of Kirk's tenure.

I'm surprised several people think next year will be bad. We return every skill position player except Stanley, but I don't think Petras will be a downgrade. If AJ returns our defensive line will be very good. We lose Ojemudia but we will have a healthy Brents. I'm pretty optimistic about next season.

No, sorry bud, but there are dozens of programs that would trade places with Iowa in a heartbeat. If you are a program like Iowa and you make a bad hire, you can wipe the program off the map within 2 years. Look at Purdue post-Tiller. Look at Illinois when Guenther made a bad hire. Yeah, you can replace a bad hire, but you have to swing for the fences more and more with each successive hire because no one worth a shit wants to walk into a tire fire.

There aren't many legendary coaches left. Ferentz is one of them. Guys like Bowden, Frank Beamer, Phil Fulmer, Tom Osborne, those dudes are gone and Iowa is one of very few programs that replaced on legend, Fry, with another. Just think of how many former elite programs have been flushed down the toilet by a shitty hire. Tennessee, USC, Florida State, Florida (albeit maybe coming back finally), Texas, Michigan.
I doubt many fans outside of Iowa would consider Kirk to be a legendary football coach.

He's a professional, he rose above it.
Yeah but Jeanine got the best of him. Air Force transmissions overriding his guitar transmitter were the final straw. And Jeanine started all the commotion by forcing Ian Faith to quit his band manager post and book gigs at air force bases and amusement parks where they were second billed to the National Puppet show.

It was brought up in yesterday's broadcast that Bill Parcells called Kirk the best coach in college football.

That's not a fan, that's a hall of fame coach. Obviously Kirk isn't and Bill may be getting a bit senile but point taken.

You and your mythology...

Well, he certainly wasn't going to co-manage the band with a woman dressed like an Australian's nightmare!

I thought Brents was our best cover corner last year. His return will be huge.

Welch will be missed.
