Its college football. Every year, every football team in America has to replace talented seniors or underclassmen who leave for the NFL or expired eligibility. Every year, good football programs have future stars waiting for their opportunity. The Hawks are no different. Maybe 2020 will be brutal, maybe some younger kids are ready to step in and make their mark on history. Look at the Freshmen that played this year. Think of the talented kids who are behind sr and jr stars. This year's team had to replace a ton of NFL talent and here we are with an opportunity to win 10 games, an improvement over last year with a much tougher schedule.
As for coach, I dont see anything close to what Fry looked like at the end of his career. KF keeps himself mentally and physically fit, and has a passion for coaching including recruiting that seems to be growing. Recruiting is on a definite upswing. Evidence that 7-8 Freshmen contributed GREATLY to an 8-10 win season that could have easily been 10-12 wins. There is a ton more younger talent here and on the way as well. Perhaps next year looks tough, but 8-9 win floor is still the expectation. That's motivation to see it through for coach.
How many of you would retire at 50-55 if you could. Some of you love what you do or might get bored, but I'd hope most of us would be off doing fun things or nothing if it was possible. KF can easily do that, but here he is coaching in his 60's and probably to 70+ because he has a passion for it, loves the community and his players and has pride in the program. Being physically and mentally able plays a big part. There is no reason to quit and no signs of diminishing returns.
You can be frustrated with the method at times but he is still delivering winning football to Iowa fans year in and year out (see Nebraska, Illinois, Minnesota, Purdue, Iowa State, Kansas, Maryland, Indiana, Rutgers, USC, UCLA, Miami). Some have occasional streaks or seasons but none or few as consistent as Iowa the past 10 yrs (sure argue USC). The program is on the rise.
