It is the Offense, Not the Defense

The defense has played winning football most of the year. We certainly played well enough on defense to win the Wisconsin and Northwestern games.

In my mind, Iowa simply won't play a mobile QB. Stanley is one of the slowest QBs in the United States. The run/pass option simply is not there, which makes us too easy to defend.

Do Iowa State and Nebraska have better athletes on offense than Iowa? No, they do not. But they have very mobile, quick QBs who keep the defense guessing. That is the difference.

Iowa's last truly mobile QB was Beathard in 2015, and it took an Act of Congress to get Ferentz to play him.

I would bench Stanley and play Mansell the rest of the year. What do we have to lose?

I agree. No run game. An offense has to have some sustained drives to keep the D off the field. A teams offense has to stay on the field to help the defense.

Iowa scoring defense, under Phil Parker
2013 - 9th in NCAA
2014 - 51st in NCAA
2015 - 20th in NCAA
2016 - 13th in NCAA
2017 - 18th in NCAA
2018 - 14th in NCAA

Phil Parker is the deodorant for Kirk and Brian Ferentz's stink, stank, stunk.

Ferentz has a half a million dollars riding on winning 8 games, bud. You bring in Mansell and piss the bed and go 1-2 in the last two conference games and the bowl game, Ferentz loses half a million bucks. Here you are, proving the old adage that the most popular guy on the team is the backup QB, while Ferentz is trying to get us to 9 wins.

I did not have these stats, but this tells it all.

I think with a truly mobile QB in 2017 and 2018, we win more of those close games.

I'm sure you are right. I just think a mobile QB is better in today's college football. I think Ferentz actually proved it with Brad Banks (mobile), Drew Tate (mobile), Ricky Stanzi (somewhat mobile), and CJ Beathard (very mobile in 2015). It doesn't have to be Mansell, but Stanley's inability to move in the pocket is killing our offense. Just my two cents.

Actually, it took a person (CJ's father) very well connected to the NFL to go on a radio program in Tennessee and allude to CJ transferring if he wasn't named the starter, hence Kirk's 1st ever January depth chart.

Agreed. The Norm Parker/Phil Parker defense has always worked best when we had a run game chewing up clock.
Iowa State and Nebraska have much better WRs than we do and it isn't even close. They might not be better "athletes" but they are better at playing the WR position.
KF won't bench Nate Stanley. Nowhere is the Union Card safer on a KF football team, than the QB position.

It isn't going to happen, but Stanley still isn't mobile enough in the pocket.

The good news is that Illinois and Nebraska are not good defensive teams.

I agree we need something fresh. But for me, the problem lies in Iowa's lack of running game. We can't run the ball at all, but we really can't run it on 1st down. An incompletion on 2nd & 10 lead to 3 & Outs... that's our offense these days. I'm not saying there's an easy fix, but I'd rather see more of Young and Sargent and less IKM

The easiest fix would be to take our current OC and make him the OL coach, because that's what he is. Then you can take the current OL coach and make him the OC because he has been an OC but he has never been an OL coach.
That simple move solves 2 problems at the same time.

That's Champtionship level defense. It is and always has been the offense and the "governor" on it.

Yes, all things equal, a mobile QB is better than an immobile QB. But let's face it, this team has a lot of holes. That 2002 team with Banks was loaded with NFL talent, particularly on the o-line. Tate's good team in '05 had a killer defense and when the line all graduated, Tate's record went to shit. Stanzi had a great defense in '09, when the linebackers and Spievey left, the team fell apart. Beathard had a good defense and soft schedule in '15, team shit the bed in '16. Unfortunately, Iowa is not a QB away from being great. This team has played a turd schedule and could easily be undefeated at this point and the media would point out all these problems and we'd all be blind to them until we got shit trucked in the B1G title game or against Alabama or another solid team in a big bowl game. Such is fandom. Go Hawks.

Even when completely healthy, "very mobile" is a stretch for CJ.

Maybe. But put Stanley back up against the end zone in Ames in 2015? Nate takes a safety and we lose that game. CJ makes a guy miss and takes off for like 50 yds. Completely changed the game.

I wasn't saying CJ was immobile. Just not "very mobile". I'd put him as "mobile"...

And, more mobile than NS isn't saying much!

Right. And at this point I'd settle for a QB with CJ's mobility, though it sure would be nice to have someone like Banks again that could break your back with his legs.

I finally got to my computer and saw that Stanley died today. T's and P's. Anyway, will it be Mansell or Petras on Saturday?
