It is the Offense, Not the Defense

Having a “moble” QB who can scramble and help the run game hides the true problem. The offensive line. This OLine is just not getting it done. No push, no holes, costly mistakes at key drives.

The best way to help this is to spread the field a little and pull as many defenders out of the box as possible. But we don’t do this until it’s 3rd and long. We instead run 3 Tight end sets with a fullback, which justifies the defense putting more players in the box.

The easiest fix would be to take our current OC and make him the OL coach, because that's what he is. Then you can take the current OL coach and make him the OC because he has been an OC but he has never been an OL coach.
That simple move solves 2 problems at the same time.
I'm going to assume that our current OL coach and former OC didn't come to Iowa to be an OL coach. What usually happens to the job performance of someone who feels they were unjustly passed over for a promotion and how fully invested are they to the success of the person who was promoted over them? I'm sure he is being a professional but there has to be some lingering resentment to being passed over for the coaches son. Would he have stepped down to come to Iowa if he had known?
