Is this Our Worst OL Under Ferentz?

This OL reputation stuff is a complete joke. Yes we have had a couple of great tackles but that is about it.

Too many lines full of undersized, non physical guards and centers.

KF ball ..... The Iowa Rudy-eyes!

Good point. James Ferentz is a good example of a center who was undersized, non-physical, and over-rated.

I think Iowa has the worst LB corps in decades.

This is no joke. There is a reason Alston wasn't playing. Slow, can't get off blocks and out of position a ton. The fact that Jewell and Bower are even playing let alone starting is a total recruiting failure. 3 3+ year starters graduate with no one in waiting and we don't target jucos to help fill the gap.

The announcers said that Donnel is even being scouted as an NFL draft pick. We have all heard the hype on Scherff and Blythe being NFLers, but with Donnel as well, that's three NFLers on one very very below average Big 10 line. Why isn't Brian Ferentz being grilled about this? Instead, there are actually threads about him being promoted. lol

I will be super surprised if Blythe sniffs the NFL. Pretty good college player but he does not have the pre-requisite size. See Schreff pro scout break down thread if you want to see how important that is.

The huge problem has been lack of value placed on size and physicality across the entire line. KF loves him small interior o-lineman. He normally has good tackles but the inside guys can be weak. Big mistake when you play good teams.

We should have played Boone Myers and Boettenger at the guards this year with Blythe at center. This would have given is much more size and physicality.

We lost 6'5" 300 lbs Bofelli at guard that combined with Schreff was a really good left side last year. I think Bofelli is on the Bears practice squad? Of course KF/BF plugged in a guy that was small and a year away in Welsh to start the season and suddenly our run game was bad. Combine that with a really erratic player in Walsh at right guard and you get problems running to either side.

# 1 is size(height and weight) and physicality

It's NOT a matter of quality of OL, it's just our offensive scheme. We stretch the field the LEAST of any program around. All 11 defenders basically no further than 4 yards from LOS, completely crowd the LOS. Running game has no chance.

The crowding we did to Minny had no effect on their running game.

Dont understand it. Our first drive started so good. Our guys were pushing them around and all of a sudden we fell apart. Especially on the Oline!

My knowledge of O-line technique is less than zero. But when someone like Hawkeye Gamefilm is critical of our line's play, I pay attention.

I don't know if it's coaching, or inexperienced guards, but it's killing us. Ferentz teams are built around great O-lines, physical defenses, and LBs who can cover the pass. With the exception of our D-line, we're 0 for 3.

Brian Ferentz is just another in a long line of people with that last name to be overpaid while being terrible at his job.

How on earth do some people not see this already?

But you are arguing against yourself a little bit. Boettenger is listed at 267 in the media guide. Which means he actually weighs about 257 because Iowa always exaggerates ht. and wt. Don't believe me? Most recent example is CJF. Compare what Iowa listed him at and what his actual measurements were at combine/draft day.

The real question is if this is the most "underachieving" team of the Ferentz era, including the coaches.

Not even close. The 2010 team was top 10 in the nation in terms of talent, and was a dropped pass in the endzone by an All-Big Ten receiver at Indiana from finishing 6-6 in the regular season.

This year's team isn't even in the same universe in terms of talent.
