Is this Our Worst OL Under Ferentz?

Remember when we were OL University? Coming into the season, we had a pre-season All-American left tackle and a pre-season first team all Big 10 center, yet we have one of the worst rushing attacks in the conference and pass protection is atrocious. Isn't OL the one position where we actually have some 4 star recruits on the field? Who is coaching those guys?

If this is not our worst rushing team in the Ferentz era (despite having a 3rd year starter back), which one was? The season we were down to our 5th string RB doesn't count, as that OL still played well and allowed Drew Tate to throw all over the place.

The answer is no. 1999, 2000, 2007 come to mind instantly.

Nice try Jon. Those first two years don't count as those weren't Ferentz's players and he was just establishing his program. And 2007 had a QB that wouldn't throw the ball unless someone was wide open. Yet AY and Sims had 1,500 yds combined rushing on 300 carries....5 yds a carry.

This is easily the worst OL under Ferentz...especially when factoring in returning starters. OP is right.

2007? That line had Seth Olsen, Mike Jones, Kyle Calloway, Rafael Eubanks, Dace Richardson, and possibly Yanda, did it not? Plus, wasn't Albert Young tearing things up that year? That line could not have been as bad as these guys? As for the 1999 and 2000 seasons, those don't really count as Ferentz OL's, as none of the guys were recruited by Kirk and that was when we were a 1-10 caliber team.

The question wasn't 'Is this our worst OL under Ferentz that consisted of players Ferentz recruited'. Different topic.

The 2007 OL was still worse than this one. Jake C was sacked nearly 50 freaking times that year.
 


Fair point, Jake was sacked an absolute ton that year. He was always running for his life and refused to throw it away. If Jake didn't throw several away today (one of which was a costly intentional grounding call), we would have had a ton of sacks as well.

Our offense has ZERO identity and that comes from the coaches. frankly, this isn't a good scheme with a not very good quarterback. If the other team gets a pass rush, rudock/vandenberg/insert name goes down like a house of cards in a breeze. If we get a rush on the opponent QB, he runs for 15 yards and a first down. has the line looked good this year? no they have not. However, when you have no threat at qb or tailback and refuse to throw the ball down the field, it's like taking candy from a baby on defense. I don't care how good the O-line is in that scenario, it will always be an uphill battle
 


No, this is not the worst o-line under Ferentz. It just looks like it, because most plays are short yardage allowing defenses to stay in the box. Also, we tell the defense were running half the time, because every check down is a stretch left or right. I don't care how good or bad your line is, if you tell the defense you are running, you aren't going to get anywhere.
 


Also, if Albert Young were on this team, he'd be doing much better than he was doing in 2007. Iowa doesnt really have a true running back at this point, or one that can play a complete all around RB type of game.
 


Given the number of returning starts and starters on the OL, the results this year have been more disappointing than for any other OL I can recall. Couple that with the fact that essentially every other starter on offense returned, sans CJF, the performance is even more baffling. Makes you wonder what's going on in the locker room....because talent certainly isn't the issue...
 


It's not about the O-line being bad it's about the play calling being bad. Weisman just got things going with some huge holes and then we come out the very next series and start chucking the ball around into the wind down by what 3 points? Stupid play calling.

Agreed. This O-line is easily as disappointing as the 2010 defense was. Based on returning playing time/potential.
 




After game 6, the 2012 oline has to be up there too. Opposing defensive players were required to take a number prior to moving through the turnstile that was the left side of that line after the injuries. My god, JVB would get the snap from the shotgun and immediately begin running for his life. It got to the point that even if they did block he had been conditioned to freak out a bit.

2007 was pretty bad though...
 


I would say the answer remains a solid "YES." It especially hurts when our "top 5 NFL draft pick" gives up another two sacks. These guys are out of position and their technique is awful. Our OL outweighed Minn's DL by 40 lbs a person.
 




This OL reputation stuff is a complete joke. Yes we have had a couple of great tackles but that is about it.

Too many lines full of undersized, non physical guards and centers.
