Is Ryan Leaf Now Unseated?

Definitely one of the biggest Heisman busts but not as bad as OJ.

OJ had a great pro career. Did you ever see him? He was a real slasher, he could carve up a defense.

As for Leaf, there was a lot of speculation whether he or Manning would go #1. This was during the era where sports psychology really started taking off, and I recall an interview with a guy who's firm had vetted them both. He said we believe one of these guys has all the traits to be a great NFL QB, and the other one doesn't. Cut and dried. He wouldn't elaborate. Talk about nailing it.

I know OJ had a great pro career. I watched him play college football on TV all the time and in the pros.

Yeah this thread is more about heisman winners being a bust in their NFL playing career but there is more than a playing career.

So overall, OJ going from heisman winner, great pro, rental car huckster, ABC tv analyst, to murderer and armed robber is quite the bust.

in terms of draft position, no. but the way they talk about him on every sports outlet you'd think he was God's gift to football.

^^ Totally agree, like Tim Tebow and others who really havent done anything.

Manziel had one great year in college, he had great athletes around him, he could scramble and run but you dont make a living doing that as a qb in the pros because he is not Cam Newton. Manziel's scrambling gave him looks at receivers who broke coverage and were wide open and easy to hit. Let me ask everyone this: did you ever see manziel have to fit it in tight windows a lot at TamU?

Tebow wasn't a high draft choice, though. And frankly, I'm not sure he has been given the best chance. Adn he DID win a playoff game.

Dethroned, not as the biggest bust, but as the biggest loser - a case could be made for that. I can't believe I wasted an entire sentence (2, including this one) on the topic of Johnny Manziel.

as far as trainwrecks on and off the field go, he's up there. He's pretty much tied with leaf and leaf has like 20 years on him. As far as pure busts go, it's tough to beat out JaMarcus Russell. #1 pick and is out of the league in 3 years, riding the pine for the last two. Leaf lasted longer than that, way longer. Name one other #1 pick that did that who didn't get injured in any major sport. Russell just didn't have any of the off the field issues or get known for anything, thus he's forgetable. His claim to fame is throwing a football a long ways from his knees, that's pretty much it. Compare that with the boz being bulldozed by bo jackson, leaf being an all around jackass and drug addict, and soon to be deceased johnny manziel and his name doesn't even pop up on anybody's radar.

I agree. You have a better way to describe it. Prob not a bust compared to where they were drafted along with expectations but probably more of a train wreck off the field. I think that's what I was trying to initially point out. The guy just seems to not be able to get out of his own way.

The guy is a huge train wreck off the field. Who knows, maybe there were other guys that were just as bad back in the day but we didn't have Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook where everyone saw everything instantly.

Could never understand why the Browns took Manziel. I knew the second he was kicked out of Peyton Mannings QB camp that he was a loser.

Leaf is still undisputable king of busts, though.

Browns one of those teams that can't seem to get out of their own way either.

I would compare the Manziel pick to Tebow or Clarett. Not many had them projecting as a good pro. But teams to a chance on them...two of them Denver
