Is Jok a starter by year end?

I don't think Fran cares who starts the game and neither do I. He will play 10 or 11 players each game. And who starts and plays more minutes will depend on match-ups and how effective each player is in that game. Either way, Jok is going to get a lot of May's minutes and probably some of Ogelsbys.

I don't think playing 10 or 11 players a game is a smart decision. There is a flow and rythem with the game of basketball. Players, match ups, and tempo create and dictate this flow. If you are only getting a 2 - 4 min playing time burst I think it will be tough to maintain consistancy. I hope Fran keeps the number around 8 or 9...... 4/5 guards and 3/4 bigs. I feel like playing 11 is like YMCA basketball

I don't think it will be 2 - 4 minute playing time bursts. It seems to me that Fran lets guys get in the flow a bit and goes a few more minutes each rotation. If they only go 2 to 4 minutes they are most likely sitting for some one on one coaching...due to a mistake. I also don't think being 11 deep and having an 11 man rotation means all 11 guys play a lot every game. There will be bumps and bruises. There will be off nights. There will be match-up issues. I suspect you will get the 8 or 9 you're suggesting in most games...not always the same 8 or 9.

Fran has also said that playing time won't be an issue because the guys will be tired...from pushing tempo and working their tails off on defense. If all 11 guys played equally it would be just over 18 minutes a game. Some will obviously play more and others less. Even at 10 minutes a guy can come in and play 5 minutes each half.

If Mike G. is healthy I dont see how he doesnt get 20-25 Min a a game. Agree with the poster who said he will be a all time great Hawk. Just has to high a BB IQ and work ethic

I agree,

Signed,

Woodbury, Gesell, and Clemmons in 2012-13, Aaron White in 2011-2012, Basabe, Marble, and McCabe in 2010-2011...

Well, then again...

So are you sayin Iowa has the same amount of talent over the last four years? I mean some of those guys started as FR and now dont. Why is that?

I didn't see enough from Mike G to tell me he's got all time great hawk potential yet. I don't put him in Horner or Olivers company by any means yet. Let alone Armstrong or Lesters. He's not the defender Sapp is now and Sapp is going to get better. Sapp is really good at that mid range pull up J off the dribble and I think he's just more athletic then Mike. I don't see Mike bridging the athletic gap but Sapp can improve his ball handling running the show and possibly his outside shooting to be as good as or better then Mike. I'm not saying Mike stinks by any means don't misconstrue what I'm saying. It just wouldn't surprise me if Sapp improves to the point where he's starting and or on the floor more then Mike. They were only freshmen last year

Part of the reason I think Jok may end up as a starter by year end is I believe Mike G will struggle this season due to playing out of position.

I like Mike G the PG. I'm not a huge fan of Mike G the SG.

Clemmons can't shoot. This team can't afford to sit shooters.

You think Clemmons is more athletic than Gesell.

You're smoking drugs.

I think Clemmons can run faster, jump higher score in the lane better and play defense better then Mike. Not by a mile though I don't think he's head and shoulders better. But I give him the edge in all those things. I think Mike is a better ball handler runs the offense better and over all shooter then Clemmons so far. I just think Clemmons can bridge that gap more likely then Mike can the other way. I could be wrong just my 2 cents.

I don't think Gesell had too many plays like this..

I think Gesell can pretty clearly run faster, jump higher and score in the lane better than Clemmons. I'll give you that Sapp's defense is better, but not by much. Gesell will overtake him by the end of his career.

I'm not in practice every day to see them running sprints against each other or even practice head to head. But from what I have seen I just disagree with ya. Time will tell. Hope they both become all time great and end up in the NBA. My feelings sure wouldn't be hurt if I'm wrong.

False. Clemmons shot just as well or better than the team last year.
Not really. He shot the ball 7 times in 5 NIT games last year. In Big 10 play, he attempted 93 shots and missed 62 of them. He's a very good player, but he's not a shooter, and this team needs shooters.

Just sit back and watch the show

I have to be honest. I dont know how good Jok is. But Im excited by what I read on here. But I just think M.G. is special because of whats between his ears. I also think he can play the 2 very well. Im more concerned with his health than anything

Who was shooting better on the team that Clemmons was taking time from?

I think Clemmons is more athletic. I think Gesell has better basketball instincts/intangibles. I like them both and I think both are very good and will get better. I refuse to pick one over the other because I'm extremely happy they're both Hawks. It wouldn't shock me to see them as the starting back court their last 2 years with Jok playing some at both the 2 and the 3.

That's not the discussion we were having. The issue here is one person is saying that Clemmons is going to take PT from Gesell and point guard in the future, while I feel Gesell will get more time because he's a much better shooter, and this team needs shooting...in the future.

I agree with the health concern...hoping it doesn't become 1 thing after another. Clemmons is built more for the physical style of the Big 10. I'm not saying Gesell doesn't have what it takes because I definitely think he does. I hope he gets healthy and stays healthy.
