Is Jok a starter by year end?

Shooting guard is our weakest position. Overall, the team is better with Marble at point but Mike G is not a better SG than PG. Gesell has already had to deal with a couple injuries and the other option is Josh Ogelsby who I think will have a better year shooting but is still limited defensively.

We'd have an even taller lineup.

Marble, 6-6
Jok, 6-6
White, 6-9
Uthoff 6-9
Woody, 7-1

Thoughts?

i think the real question is, and if you reflect honestly i think you'll agree here, is not if jok will start, but rather if he'll be named head coach AND AD within the year. i think that is not out of the question here.

If it comes down to defense, Josh will win that battle. Jok will get his minutes though, he really can shoot the ball.

I think 11 guys will play and starting won't mean a whole lot. If the starter isn't playing well and the bench player subs in and is playing well then the bench player will get the majority of the minutes. The next game it could be the opposite.

I totally agree, minutes are a premium for those who execute what Fran & Co. want....the starting 5 is kind of irrelevant imo.....Jok will need to understand his role in the offense/defense to help this club win...he will have his minutes and he needs to make everyone of them count...man, I can't wait to see him in action...it sounds like they all will have a good time on the court regardless of who's out there...

Jok will play if can play defense and shoot the 3.... If he is off in either of those he will get bumped for the next man in. I expect to see a lot of guys playing that spot until they find a good rythem.

With this years depth it will test Frany to work it to his advantage. Certain guys play better together than others. Need to figure that out early to create the best attack on offense and defense for the full game.

Pretty obvious statement i know but it is so frusterating when certain guys come and all productivity just drops

I think Jok will be the scoring drought stopper, in particular, just like he was last night. When the team was being pressed score-wise and couldn't score, Peter came to the rescue and helped get the team back on track and the lead back to double digits.

Yeah, but Ogs did it before halftime when things got close as well. As others have said, I expect it will just be a game by game thing to figure out who has the hot hand at any particular time.

Should be very very interesting.

I don't see him starting either. I think Fran likes a traditional lineup to start with either Mike G or Clemmons (I'm not 100% sure Clemmons can't beat out Mike G to start he's got a high ceiling I think) to get a sense for the flow of the game and to see how they match up. I think the mins will be spread out alot though. Marble and White are the only two I see playing 25-30 plus to start with anyway. If Uthoff is playing lights out he might be tough to take off the floor much too. Wouldn't be surprised if he's starting. With the depth this team will have and miss matches that they can present to who ever they are playing I just see the mins being distrubuted almost on a game to game basis based on opponent. Some games they might use the big guys more and against others have it be more of a run and gun little guys game. I can't see Jok getting the starting nod at any point in the year without injuries being involved. There are 4 other guards he'll be fighting for pt with all of them having more experience then him.

I don't know if Sapp will ever beat Gesell out for the spot, but I agree that his ceiling is very high (higher than Mike's, IMO). At least right now, he's far more visibly comfortable leading a break than Mike, and he plays top-notch defense when he's focused (which is something he's said he put a lot of emphasis on this summer).

For me and the teams Ive played on you start the most mature players and then its how you play as to how long youre in the game. So to me with the talent and upperclassmen no Jok would not be a starter this year(he could play most of the game).

Plus I think shooters are more scary off the bench when everyone is just a little winded. Bring in JO and Jok about 5 mins into the game and see how well they can chase them around. We saw teams chase JO around they arent going to like have 2 shooters come in at the same time.

If Jok keeps playing the way he has the last 2 games, he'll be hard to keep off the floor, whatever the line-up. Right now, it's a matter of consistency and health (Note, consistency of defensive effort and lack of mistakes included- not just scoring). If he's got those two things in the bag, he's got a higher ceiling than any guard on the team. I figured if healthy, he'd get a good share of minutes off the bench this year. But he seems to be ahead of the curve so far with consistency. It'll be an especially fun year if he keeps this up.

I'm definitely not calling you out here and tend to agree with you. I'm just looking at what happened last year with Woodbury, Gesell and Clemmons. They all played ahead of McCabe, Basabe and May. I don't know if Jok will start but based on what Fran has done previously it's a definite possibility...even from day 1 if that's what Fran thinks is best. This isn't a prediction just an observation.

I don't think Fran cares who starts the game and neither do I. He will play 10 or 11 players each game. And who starts and plays more minutes will depend on match-ups and how effective each player is in that game. Either way, Jok is going to get a lot of May's minutes and probably some of Ogelsbys.

Keep in mind that the new guys and the backups are getting the most minutes to get experience while the veterans are playing sparingly.

Joks playing well but hes also getting allot of time against poor competition.

I agree,

Signed,

Woodbury, Gesell, and Clemmons in 2012-13, Aaron White in 2011-2012, Basabe, Marble, and McCabe in 2010-2011...

Well, then again...

starting is incredibly overrated....BUT there are some players who are better without that expectation early or ever, and there are some who relish it.

Peter is going to push Josh for those two guard minutes that Mike isn't getting. That's a good thing.

I agree that Clemmons has a high ceiling, but I could not disagree more that his ceiling is higher than Gesell's.

Mike (along with perhaps Jok, but who knows), is our player with the best chance to be a true all-time great Hawk. He is just scratching the surface of what he could do during his time at Iowa, and his name could be right up there with BJ, Ronnie and Andre by the time he leaves. Sapp will be a good one. Gesell could be a truly great one.

The best players start, and the best players play the most.
