Is JO is done?

I'm all in favor of passing to get a better shot but to many times we were over passing and missing open shots. With our propensity for turnovers last night passing the ball with the shot clock winding down was a recipe for disaster. This team has played all year waiting for an alpha male to step up and lead this team. At this point I don't think it's going to happen. Whoever the captain of this team is, if we have one, needs to call a players meeting and decide if they really want to go after it or if they just want to play and watch others go after it.

I think the posts on game threads whether they are positive or negative follow closely to how the team plays. In games like last night where we should have been the better team but never got into a real flow at any point in the game and it didn't appear like the players tried to change it. When a team doesn't play up to it's capabilities and they're losing at home to a team they beat on the road it's incredibly frustrating and the posts reflect it. This team has shown how good they can be the problem is when we expect them to play well they deliver a nonchalant effort that results in a loss.

It's not to get reactions. The board here sucks, it's so overwhelmingly negative. I'm about done with it, there's like 8 good posters on here. I've been incredibly, over the top negative since midway through the game and more people agree with me than call me out. There's no point in trying to have a real thread on here because it just turns into people bashing everyone related to the program. Just wanted to try being on the other side of it for a while. Minnesota isn't that bad of a team at all, they just had a ton of close losses, I'm not shocked at all nor do I think it's the beginning of another collapse. This team isn't going to consistently look good every night, there are very few college teams that do, and those teams are in the top 10.

Oh gawd. Well, I bought it, hook-line-and-sinker. I kept reading your posts and thinking, I thought this guy was a solid poster, why is he being such a doosh.

I'd read that even Fran is scratching his head at JO passing up shots. He says he is encouraging him to and he is knocking them down in practice. Yet last night happened along with how the season has gone for him. I'd love for him to have a good game and knock in a handful of shots. Now I just think between Jok playing well and he not having confidence 10 mins a game or so is all JO is going to play which leaves him 3-5 shots tops I suppose. And if Clemmons were playing even just a little better I'd like to think JO wouldn't play much at all.

Now JO isn't who I'm blaming for that loss last night by any means. Expectations for him haven't been high for awhile. But Uthoff, Jok and MG I think were guilty of the same thing down the stretch last night and to me it's not about how many passes are made it's about taking the good look in rhythm whenever that happens. If it's on the first pass or 6th pass I don't care. If you are any of those guys you shoot the dang ball. Now time and score game situations can dictate that of course but when we were fighting uphill like that most of the 2nd half you just can't play that way.

There was a lot of publicity about an assistant coach pointing out how their shooting percentage goes up when they pass the ball more. They weren't looking for their shot, but thinking about it to much. To much passing against a quick team is going to create more turnovers. It sounds like a coaching problem.

Lazy passes are going to result in more turnovers. Crisp passes to the outside shoulder won't result in many turnovers. The guys have to make the right passes and make them quickly.

Barkley was right, analytics are for dorks. How did those fancy stats work out for us last night? We passed the ball around a hell of a lot and sure didn't shoot no 60%.

We did pass the ball a lot. But we rarely reversed it. And when we did, we shot a high percentage. We just spent too much time on one side of the floor (usually the offensive left side).

Easier said than done though.

Honestly, while playing a team of ball-thieves like Minnesota, it does make some sense to not risk the extra pass for the chance a great shot. Sometimes that great shot is never going to come and that outcome is more likely against a team like Minnesota than other teams.

This isn't junior high. This is Division 1 basketball, D1 basketball!! D1 players should be able to pass it around the horn moving the defense for the whole shot clock before shooting without getting a turnover. More dribbling will lead into more TO's than passing, IMO.

I've never been in a practice with the coach yelling, you're passing too much. Most want a lot of O touches before a shot. Moves the D until a mismatch can be exploited. This is exactly what Wisky does.

I agree that Minnesota makes it tougher and against this particular team taking an earlier open shot makes more sense. I think Fran would also agree. He didn't know why Jok, Uthoff and Oglesby weren't taking more open 3s. Uhl seemed ready to jack up a shot every time he touched the ball last night...must have been hot warming up before the game.

It seemed like all of Iowa shooters were passing up on a lot of shots looking for the one great play. Minnesota is quicker than Iowa. They seemed like they were trying to be a lesser version of the Harlem Globetrotters.

Yes they were. I think they lead the BIG in turnovers. They get a lot. I didn't think they would turn Iowa over 16 times yesterday though. Giving up those possessions & not getting the the FT line killed Iowa.
