Is college basketball that good of a product?

I watch all the Hawk games but other than that I catch very little college ball.... if I do it's usually the Big East games. I would be much more interested in watching other Big 10 games if we were jocking for a position in the standings.

Another huge set of problems for NCAA basketball is the fact that it is over-grown and over-exposed. There are 32 conferences and over 300 teams, which waters down an already watered down talent pool. Also, college basketball is on every single day. Unlike football, it is not an event, because you can literally find CBB on television at anytime, and most of those games are duds.

Much like baseball and college bowl games, college basketball has lost its appeal because rather than being able to see a few great games a week, television traded that for 60 mediocre games a week.

I can't stand the NBA. It hasn't been good since the mid-90s.

I agree 100%, I cannot stand the NBA. It is boring to watch for me, yeah they are far superior athletically, but that is it, I don't think most NBA players could play in college against a zone because they can't shoot or have good enough fundamentals.
I quit watching the NBA consistently after the Sonics-Bulls finals series, it just isn't good to me. There are no real elite players in the NBA anymore as I don't believe there are any truly complete players and tell me where the heck all the "defensive stoppers" went?
There are so many things that I would rather watch than tune into the NBA, the overall skill is so poor today. I do admire the athleticism in the NBA, but that is all.
I can hardly stomach watching the finals anymore. The "great" players today couldn't hang in the NBA in the mid-80's to the mid 90's and most couldn't play at anytime before that period.

Also, nothing beats March Madness, Iowa in there or not because I have accepted the idea that Iowa will not win a National Championship in my lifetime. I love College Basketball weather Iowa is good or bad, I am just a huge fan. I love my Hawks and the Postseason is better when they are in it, but doesn't detract my love of the Tournament.

I agree 100% with the original post. I used to like college BB as well as football. I'm trying to get back into it but it's been hard. And yes, I think it has something to do with the hawks not having a pulse for a decade.

I wish something could rekindle my past love for the sport. Hope Fran is the guy to do this.

I prefer college basketball to college football because in college basketball you get the upsets like Northern Iowa over Kansas, Hampton over Iowa State, etc. and you see the cinderella stories like Butler and George Mason. In college basketball the national champion is decided on the court and unlike college football every team technically has a chance to win the national championship.

Don't get me wrong I love watching Hawkeye football, but college football is such an arms race where only teams from six conferences and teams like Boise and TCU have no chance to win a national championship even if they do every thing that would be required of them if they were in the BCS. I love watching the Hawkeyes play in bowl games, but they really don't mean anything other than giving us a chance to escape to a warm destination and earn some revenue for the school.

The NFL is what it is, the most popular sport in America, and I get caught up in it but I prefer to watch college sports.
The NBA is such a boring game to watch. I can watch the last 2 minutes of a game if it's close, but even the last two minutes take about 20 minutes.

The only league on par for me with college basketball is the MLB, but with the controversies involved in it I still prefer college basketball.

I'd be curious what you mean by "fundamentals" when you say MOST NBA players do not have "Fundamentals."

Some of the players that played in the 80's, 90's....Magic, Reggie Miller, Kerr..... who announce games will tell you this is an era with some of the most talented players in the history of the league.
Barkley.... Kenny Smith...... go see where they rank Kobe Bryant, Shaq and Tim Duncan in all-time greatest players.
Go see where they rank Dwayne Wade on all-time shooting guards. Not my opinion - I don't agree with them on Wade...but I defer to these guys just like I defer to Herbstreit and Jon Miller on college football.

Not to mention what they say about Lebron James.

I'm assuming you really meant it when you said the NBA bores you- and you probably don't watch it much- that would be my guess.

I would watch it before making those comments. That seems more fair. Your comments are way off. Not because I said so- because some of the greatest players ever who are now commentators, who are now owners, coaches, and general managers in the NBA say so. lol

I can't stand NCAA basketball. There is very little athleticism, the shot clock is too long, the offenses are very simplistic, the three pointer is too easy and too prominent, the officiating is often shakey, and the biggest stars in the sport are men in their 50's.

Honestly, I can (and often do) watch any NBA game I come across, but I don't watch NCAA basketball outside of March or games Iowa plays where I think they have a chance.
Pretty much the opposite of how I think.

Sure, NBA players are more athletic, but the NBA is full of so many ball hogs I don't find it very interesting to watch.

The college shot clock was shortened from 45 to 35 years ago, and I think that was a pretty change. Any less than that and they wouldn't be able to run much offense.

The 3 point line was moved back fairly recently to make it closer to the NBA distance.

NBA officials are known for coddling the superstar players to excess, and there was recently a huge scandal with refs fixing games. I know some college refs suck, but I don't mind it so much.

I think the NBA has been on the decline since MJ was king, and I barely pay attention to it, even during the 2 month long playoffs.

It just bores me to watch, I used to really like it, the game has changed and every announcer that goes to the booth isn't going to say anything different.
The most fundamental players came into the league when it was good, the recent players frustrate me. Dwight Howard is probably one of the most athletic big men to ever play, but what does he do offensively, he has such a limited post game, but is widely considered one of, if not the top Centers.
Steve Nash winning MVP's at the rate he did, gee, he is pretty fundamental. How has Sebatian Telfair worked out, who was supposed to be so great?
I just don't like the game today, it has no appeal for me, I used to watch everything and just can't do it anymore. Something is different about the game, it just isn't better than it used to be.

Speaking of the NBA Spank- Kobe needs 1 more ring and you owe me something.

Used to be under a different name, posted more often 3 or 4 years ago.

We made a bet about Kobe and how he wouldn't win anymore titles. I said he would win 3.

I can't remember if you owe me $1,000..... or just some tasty suds. :p just kidding.

I don't remember what it was- I just remember you, jimmbain...... fun and heated debates on the NBA and Kobe bryant. lol

Can't remember what we bet though!

I'll need you old user name to confirm. :)

OH MY GOD!

There are at least 2-3 shooters per NBA team that would absolutely light up a zone defense.

Lack of skill? There is a reason you don't see NBA teams press like college team. College teams have terrible ball handlers in general and can be pressed. Look no further than Iowa for terrible ball handlers. Can you imagine NBA teams trying to press Derrick Rose and all the 1-4 who can handle the ball in the NBA.

I am sorry you just don't understand basketball if you don't understand how good the players are in the NBA right now. Defensive stoppers? They don't let guys play nearly as physical on the ball defense anymore like they did in the 1980's and 1990's. I am sorry but there are very good on ball defenders in the NBA right now. Look no further than last year when the Cavs were playing the Bulls in the playoffs. Lebron decided in the final game of the series to guard Derrick Rose (maybe you have seen him but he is unreal quick/strong) and Lebron was able to shut him down.

I can understand not liking things about the flow of the NBA game but it is a very good game.

At least you don't have to watch any Devan Bawinkle caliber players in the NBA.

In all fairness - it's your opinion - I just questioned the fundamentals statement.

Dwight Howard this year is showing quite an arsenal on the offensive end- it's pretty well documented. In fact, Hakeem Olajuwon received a lot of credit for this and just in the last couple weeks Stan Van Gundy came out and wanted to make sure Patrick Ewing got credit for his improvements. If you watch him play this year- his footwork is pretty damn good all things considered. Before he was just a dunker.

Steve nash- is one of the best shooters in the history of the NBA. Again...not my words. Just listen to TNT. Reggie Miller said it. he might know a thing or two about shooting. His passing and ball handling...... I guess I don't understand what you mean by fundamentals. lol Have you watched him play much?

Sebastian Telfair was the 13th overall pick out of high school. Not like he was the #1 pick or supposed to be a Lebron James type. I don't get why you're using his name. I don't follow here at all. I think you're using a poor example.

Anyway- This isn't an NBA thread- didn't mean to cut in here! I'll leave it at that....... I get you don't like the NBA though and find it boring..... I'm good with that argument..... I just don't follow your other comments. :p
go hawks!

I will give you that one and I do think LeBron and Derrick Rose are the two best players in the NBA today, yeah all the Kobe lovers shoot me for that one.:D
Tim Duncan is one of my favorite all time players and he has done pretty well.
Maybe it is the fact that there isn't as much physical play, I don't know, it just doesn't have the appeal it used to for me...sorry.

I'm a Bulls fan and Derrick Rose isn't in the top 5.

I guess it doesn't appeal to you so you really don't pay much attention yet you decide to bash the NBA like you did in the previous posts and try make comments on who you think the top players are....

I like both games for various reasons. I just go crazy when people talk about lack of skill at the NBA level. I think people sometimes people forget how big the guys are in the NBA too.

Kobe is great but all the minutes are really starting to show, his knee is just not as healthy as it once was. In a one game scenario I still probably take Kobe, but over the long haul I'll take Lebron.

I guess, in the end it comes down to how much I enjoy the NCAA tournament so much more than the NBA postseason.
On Dwight Howard, the little I have saw of him this year, he looks to be more than just a dunker this year as you said.

I think they certainly have "fundamentals" in the NBA in the sense they can pass, dribble, and shoot.....at least some can shoot the ball real well. The difference is team play vs individual showboating. The NBA has a lot of ballers, but team play is not going to always be the highlight of an NBA game. That is why you will see from time to time the Europeans beating our pros in World Competitions (Europeans valuing team play). And the Europeans have shown they can be better shooters.
