Is Beathard Iowa's Best QB since Chuck Long?

He played in 11 games in one season and 7 in a season he was hurt. I'm not arguing he was a great qb. He wasn't. He was in on the s start of something special. Those 11 starts came on a 5-6 team that dropped their first 3 games that all went to the wire against #3 OK, #7 Nebby, and an 8 win Indiana team. They also lost to #3 OSU and #15 Purdue (very close). After what Iowa had been through, yes, Suess is a favorite. He also had a severe kidney injury that year.

In 1980 he was sacked 8 times against MN and fractured his wrist in the 7th game. He was done for the year. They did go 4-4 in the Big Ten (2-3) from that 7th game on including 2 pummelings.

Not sure where you got he was a part-time qb. Fry did play Pete Gales to mix things up some. Gales was more athletic and a terrible passer.

Ironically Suess was what I think KF wants as a QB. Not what he is successful with, but what he wants. No mistakes and protect the ball. Suess threw 2 interceptions up to his season ending injury.

Again, I'm not saying he was good. He just holds my memory as one who helped turn it around and was guts (when he could stand up). Mosley was a terrific runner.

You couldn't have possibly seen him play and say he was what KF "wants" in a QB. He was slow, went down in a high wind and was the original incarnation of Jake Christensen with regard to throwing motion and touch.

And Bohannon split the snaps in 1979, Gales saw little action. Gales took over when Seuss went down in 1980, then split with Bohannon when the latter returned from redshirt year.

The offense was not very good in 1980, and 1981 was clearly built on the defense (with good reason, as it was an awesome defense). There were glimpses of the future with guys like JC Love-Jordan, Eddie Phillips and Norm Granger, and when Love-Jordan couldn't go in 1981, Phillips stepped up, along with a couple others (namely Phil Blatcher). Owen Gill showed that he would figure in in future years, too.

But it really wasn't until 1982 (Long's first year as starter) that one could see there was QB talent on the roster.

BTW, anyone remember Long's first start and what happened as a result?

Bohanon threw an incredible 30 passes in 79 and completed 13. Ya he split time. Yes he did play.

I was being a bit sarcastic about KF and qbs. He seems to like slower weaker armed quarterbacks over running guns as long as they don't make mistakes.

In Re to falling down, the turf then was like an ice rink. HF also liked a different style drop. Long stumbled some as well. The drop he coached (according to HF) allowed for better vision but was more awkward.

I know people who played with Jake after he left Iowa. The guy had a gun. I don't know what happened at Iowa, but I hope the KF qb senior issues don't crop up again. I will never understand Banks not starting his junior year; Stanzi later....CJ...

If you read my post, I said Suess wasn't very good. I said he was part of a change. The proceeding qbs had absolutely terrible stats. He was a breath of fresh air. He stats were at least competitive.

He hasn't won a Bowl game yet.Lets wait and see how he does this year.

Comments like this drive me nuts. You mean IOWA hasn't won a bowl game with CJB as the starter (just one game, by the way).

Sure, QB is arguably the most important position on the team, but wins and losses are not a QB stat.

Iowa got drilled in the Rose Bowl last year, and granted, the offense didn't do much, but was it also CJB's fault that the D couldn't stop Stanford? It's a team game, not a 1 man effort. That's not a get out of jail free card for QB play in these games, but I don't hold it against any one player, either.

Kinda like people saying Ricky Stanzi won an Orange Bowl - I'd argue that it was Iowa's defense that won that game more than anything else. Or the entire season they had, for that matter. In the end, the TEAM won those games.

To answer the OP, I do think CJB is one of the most gifted QB's we've seen at Iowa in a while, but like others, I want to see how his senior season goes before rating him against others.

CJB was a nice get by KF in recruiting. The coaches were smart not to tell him he wouldn't be getting help from WR's or his offensive coordinator.

I would put him as one of the best 3 since I have been around Hawkeye football. Best? Don't know. We have only had one year to base that on. One more solid year, then there's an argument for him being the best.
Well I wrote this last summer. And here it is a football year is almost up. And I have to say that CJ isn't among the best. All the promise of last year has gone away. There have been flashes, but something happened. He isn't the player he was last year. And frankly the team isn't the team it was last year. The highlight for the defense was the Michigan game. But other than that it has been hit or miss. The offense has been none existent except for the running game.

He's not even close to top 5. I also don't see him ever playing in the NFL. Like my new driver it looked shiny and turned out to be just as bad as the last one.

CJ could have been top 5, with a great Sr year. But we all know what happens to quarterbacks under KFz. Sadly he's not even close.

Fertile grounds for discussion.

Beathard could have been more potent had he gone deep more often. He could still drill them in there pretty good. Lack of receiving talent was a big problem. Don't need to throw the baby out with the bath water here. Maybe getting Wadley involved in the passing game earlier in the year could have knocked him up a few pegs.
