Is Beathard Iowa's Best QB since Chuck Long?

Legendary, yes. He is the only one who can claim to have led to an undefeated season. Whether he is the best or not, he has done something that Chuck Long didn't do.

He hasn't won a Bowl game yet.Lets wait and see how he does this year.

I would put him as one of the best 3 since I have been around Hawkeye football. Best? Don't know. We have only had one year to base that on. One more solid year, then there's an argument for him being the best.

From what I've heard or read over the years Vlasic may have been the most talented qb ever in Iowa City. Chuck Long may not have had the talent of some but his leadership was unquestioned and that over rides talent. It's all about how you use the gifts you have.

I was thinking that Vlasic should be added to the elite group of Iowa QB's until I googled his name and read up on his career. Then I decided maybe not. I guess I gave him more credit since he actually started as an NFL QB but then I realized he only started like two games and was mainly a backup QB.

So, is that the standard? Winning a bowl game?

Would you say that same thing about the whole team? "Sure, they went 12-0 last year, but they didn't win a bowl game, so let's wait and see how they do this year."

If you read my post I said "Let's wait and see".In sports your always remembered by what happens in your last game.Might not be fair but that's reality.

Didn't think you would stick with that line of thinking, but I give you kudos for your consistency and desire to win bowl games.

Lol That's why we pay the big bucks to go and watch them.Don't like going to a Bowl game and watch us lose badly.Always hope they play as well as they did all year but we know that didn't happen.Hopefully this year will be different.Go Hawks

Chuck had 5 stints in a bowl game....

Vlasic started more like 4 nfl games, but he had chronic knee injuries including his senior year. The guy was a tremendous quarterback.

This could be a fun year.

So far Beathard hasn't tarnished the no. 16. I'll wait till this year is over before I make an opinion but I bet a WR will step up big and help him out. Sure would like to see a Heisman type year from Beathard and keep this winning going strong.

For some reason I've convinced myself Vlasic had a better NFL career than that. I looked at his stats a moment ago he didn't do a whole lot in the league. In fact, Long had a better NFL career. All this time I thought it was the other way around. Between the Chargers and Chiefs I thought he started about 16 games it is not even close to that.

Chuck Long's pro career was both hindered and shortened by injuries. He had an elbow injury; he didn't have as much zip on the ball and it hurt his game. He was a first round draft choice after a great college career. He was the best on of the modern era (Hayden Fry/Kirk Ferentz), IMO. Vlasic was a tremendous talent but he only played one year at Iowa and, as mentioned, he did not have the pro career Chuck Long did.

Long was more hindered and got screwed by going to a crappy organization at the wrong time. Dumbass Wayne Fontes put in the run-in-shoot that was all the rage (for about 2 years) during Long's third year in Detroit. Long was a drop back passer, totally unsuited to that gimmicky offense. Given the right team and circumstances he would have flourished.

No, not yet. Could be one of the best. Iowa has had a number of great quarterbacks...we forget... From another list earlier
1. Brad Banks - Should have had 2 years
2. Mark Vlasic - Maybe Great QB - No knock placing him here. The other 2 were great.
4. Chuck Hartlieb - Under Rated. Sort of Montana like
5. Matt Rodgers - Solid non-flashy
6. Drew Tate - Drove me nuts
7. Matt Sherman
8. Pick Rick - Mr Excitement

Special Mention
Phil Suess. That was a memorable year and he did what he was asked. Maybe the perfect KF QB (according to KF's criterion). Not a great qb, but I liked him.
Jim Hartleb - tough as nails
CJ Beathard - Could move to top or close, but too early.

Phil Seuss was the part-time starting QB on teams that went 5-6 and 4-7. Both of those years it was defense that kept the team from going 3-8 or 2-9. Seuss/Bohannon had Dennis Mosley at RB. THAT was what gave the glimmer of hope in JHFs first season.

^^ This ^^

Also, Long had the quickest release of any QB around college football his last two years. Detroit absolutely blew the opportunity to have a good passer to complement Barry Sanders in late-80s to mid-90s.

Vlasic had worked his way into a starting job in the NFL and he had really good skills. He also got hurt not long after being named starter and starting a few games. Some players are unlucky with the injuries while others are just in the right place at the right time.

He played in 11 games in one season and 7 in a season he was hurt. I'm not arguing he was a great qb. He wasn't. He was in on the s start of something special. Those 11 starts came on a 5-6 team that dropped their first 3 games that all went to the wire against #3 OK, #7 Nebby, and an 8 win Indiana team. They also lost to #3 OSU and #15 Purdue (very close). After what Iowa had been through, yes, Suess is a favorite. He also had a severe kidney injury that year.

In 1980 he was sacked 8 times against MN and fractured his wrist in the 7th game. He was done for the year. They did go 4-4 in the Big Ten (2-3) from that 7th game on including 2 pummelings.

Not sure where you got he was a part-time qb. Fry did play Pete Gales to mix things up some. Gales was more athletic and a terrible passer.

Ironically Suess was what I think KF wants as a QB. Not what he is successful with, but what he wants. No mistakes and protect the ball. Suess threw 2 interceptions up to his season ending injury.

Again, I'm not saying he was good. He just holds my memory as one who helped turn it around and was guts (when he could stand up). Mosley was a terrific runner.
