Is Beathard Iowa's Best QB since Chuck Long?

CJ has been an inspirational player to say the least. Will his win-loss record and stats reflect on him being the best Iowa QB since Chuck Long?

Barring injury, he will prove to be one of the all time great Iowa QBs. I already rank him up there with Duncan, Ploen, Long, Banks and Tate because he has already led the Hawkeyes to a Big Ten championship (I count a Division Title as a Big Ten championship season.....)

I can't put CJ in front of a Heisman Runner up.
I can't even put CJ in front of guys like Tate/Stanzi who were successful for multiple years at least not yet and one of which won a BCS Bowl game.

The thing with CJ is I just don't know how good he really is because he had to deal with the injuries last year. Perhaps if he stays healthy, he could live up to the title of best QB since Chuck but at this point I don't think he's fully deserving of that title.

Not yet. Can he be? If he plays well and they repeat or do something close to what they did last year then he's in the ball park for sure. But based on their resumes I'd still put Banks and Stanzi above him for now... I'll tell ya what I'd sure like to see him be. He's got the moxie and ability. But will he and WRs be able to get a report going early and often to do it is the question. I think Iowa will be pretty run heavy early on and if they have the lead in those games they'll only be that way more so. I think because of that his stats may not jump off the page but we'll see..

Wins don't matter to me because the team around the qb changes. I look at ability to make a play and where the team would be without you. CJ probably made the team 3 wins better last year than Rudock would have. He probably would have made them 3 wins better the year before. That tells me a lot because Rudock was a pretty darn good qb too. Stanza made the team quite a bit better than JC but there was light years difference between Rudock and JC. Any one of the top 5 qb's could have had the season that Banks had in 02. He was really good tho.

He might be the one who has the highest ceiling for the NFL, but with one year left it may be difficult for him get to the level of some other Iowa greats. But, he could possibly have the best NFL career out of them all. Time will tell.

Interesting question. Is a BigTen West title today the equivalent of a BigTen conference title from 30 to 50 years ago?

The old BigTen had, well, 10 teams. The new divisions have 7 teams. So I would count today'so division title as equal to 70% of an old conference title. And a old conference title is worth 1.4 times as much as today's division titles.

So I would say CJ is already 70% of the way there as far as being ranked in top tier.

Skill set wise he is a legitimate pro prospect. He's gotta clean up the accuracy issues with the short and intermediate passes. If healthy the deep ball is there i am not really worried about that. The CJB we saw in the ISU game is the real CJB he has to stay healthy.....bottom line.

There is not a long list to compare him to; Long, Banks, and Stanzi. This is not a position of bragging rights for Iowa. Linemen, counting TE's? Yes. Defensive secondary players? Yes. QB's? No.

No, not yet. Could be one of the best. Iowa has had a number of great quarterbacks...we forget... From another list earlier
1. Brad Banks - Should have had 2 years
2. Mark Vlasic - Maybe Great QB - No knock placing him here. The other 2 were great.
4. Chuck Hartlieb - Under Rated. Sort of Montana like
5. Matt Rodgers - Solid non-flashy
6. Drew Tate - Drove me nuts
7. Matt Sherman
8. Pick Rick - Mr Excitement

Special Mention
Phil Suess. That was a memorable year and he did what he was asked. Maybe the perfect KF QB (according to KF's criterion). Not a great qb, but I liked him.
Jim Hartleb - tough as nails
CJ Beathard - Could move to top or close, but too early.

I remembered all of those guys and enjoyed watching them play. Solid would be a good way to describe many of them. I am hoping at the end of this season we have a Heisman winning QB, a West and B1G conference title and a place in the final four championship playoffs. I can dream can't I?

I put him in the same area as Hartlieb and Vlasic right now. To early to put him up with Chuck Long. Banks had one great year. To be near the top I'd say you need more than one year as a starter.

Yes. That was kind of my point as well. Long by far sets the bar with all the years he started. Ironically, he wasn't that heavily recruited.

It is funny how memories work. Chuck Long was a very good QB leading a great offense. He wasn't fast, or mobile....he didn't need to be, he was a classic drop-back passer, with an OK arm. He was exactly what Hayden needed at the time. I think the quality of QB that he was was shown by his by his lackluster pro career. I think Hartlieb, Vlasic, Banks and Stanzi and CJ were/are better QBs'.. I know this is Hawkeye heresy, let the fireworks begin.

From what I've heard or read over the years Vlasic may have been the most talented qb ever in Iowa City. Chuck Long may not have had the talent of some but his leadership was unquestioned and that over rides talent. It's all about how you use the gifts you have.

I mostly agree, but I"m not sure exactly how to characterize Stanzi. Will always remember him as Pick Six Rick. He also had a heck of a team behind him. Only they covered his mistakes a lot. CJ has to do better his senior year to rank up there. Under KF that isn't a given...along with injuries.

Chuck Hartlieb may have actually been the best, but not playing for as good of a team. Regardless, these are some great QBs.

I blame Stanzi's pick sixes on KOK, it was always the same play that never worked, I can see it in my head today.
