Poll results: Iowa football fans loathe to love Wisconsin | TheGazette

Over 4000 votes cast...and Wisconsin was the team that received the most votes with regards to the 'football program Iowa fans loathe'. (23%)

Nebraska was second (21%) followed by Northwestern, then Iowa State.

Surprised? Agree? Disagree?

I am guessing most of the voters were Eastern Iowans, which makes more sense...if the Register ran a poll like this, I am guessing the numbers would be different...but maybe not

People lie to themselves every day.

You go to work and get in a debate about Iowa. You are not debating a Northwestern fan. You are not debating a Nebraska fan. You are not debating a Wisconsin fan. You ARE debating an Iowa State fan. Iowa fans just don't want to admit that Iowa State is their biggest rival and they want to beat them the most. I get it. But in reality 90% of them are just lying.

Outside of Des Moines most people don't even realize ISU exists except one weekend a year.

I'd go:

1) Wisconsin
2) Nebraska
3) Iowa State

My number 1 and 2 will probably switch around eventually, since Nebraska is in our division now. The Iowa State game isn't as interesting as the Nebraska game.

In the 515, I think these numbers would be different. But having grown up in the 319, ISU barely existed and I am still over there quite a bit as my parents live there, and being in and around Iowa City several times a year, there's not a lot of ISU talk or rivalry smack. Des Moines? Sure there is. Cedar Rapids/Iowa City? I dont think much. So I can see how their poll, being the Cedar Rapids Gazette, tilted the way it did.

And a conference game is always more important than an out of conference game.

Friendly debate here so don't think I'm being a jerk, but how is Nebraska a bigger rival when you haven't played them yet? There is nothing there. And if we are talking about people on the eastern side of the state, they know even less Nebraska fans than they know Iowa State, Wisconsin, or Northwestern fans.

'football program Iowa fans loathe'

Having lived in IC for 3 years I can tell you that is not true

The difference is in Iowa City they recognize ISU for the pesky rodent they are, but look at other opponents as being bigger rivals. I lived in Ames for 5 years, three of those were during the 5 year run where ISU beat Iowa. Trust me, Iowa is and will always be ISU's focal point. You just hate the fact the feeling isn't reciprocated.

I agree that a conference game is always more important. But that isn't the question. Question is who is the biggest rival. Don't you think that the Florida State vs Virginia Tech game is more important to FSU? But Florida Gators are a bigger rival. Same here.

And I guess I will just have to disagree but let's say you have 3 guys walking down the streets of Iowa City. One guy is wearing a Wisconsin shirt, other a Nebraska, and the last an Iowa State shirt. The Iowa State fan will get heckled the most without a doubt. Why? Biggest rival

The reason we debate with ISU fans is because ISU fans are the ones that bring the debate to our faces in order to make themselves believe they are still relevant in Des Moines, when in fact they are now 3rd fiddle, being pushed to that place by Nebraska's joining the Big Ten.

I agree with this. Especially since so many U of Iowa students aren't from IA. I really don't care about the ISU program at all, especially since they are so bad.

Personal reasons being I have Nebraska fans that I work with. I do know some so called Iowa State fans, but don't know a whole lot about the team.

It really doesn't bother me one bit because I know how fans really feel. I've been to many games in Iowa City. I've been there to watch Iowa play MSU, Mich, Minnesota, Wisconsin, and ISU. The Iowa State game has the most hostility times 10. It really isn't even up for logical debate.

Iowa fans just don't want to admit it because than it would mean that they care about beating little brother. I get that.

that's obvious.

Here is one reason why I believe the Iowa-Nebraska rivalry is going to get much nastier from an Iowa perspective than the Iowa-ISU rivalry has been:

Much in the way ISU fans can't stand what they perceive to be as Iowa arrogance and Iowa favoritism in media etc, etc, and how that riles them up, I think Iowa fans are going to experience that with Nebraska. Nebraska fans may view Iowa as 'little brother' right from the get go...and that's gonna tick people off.
