Iowa wins the B1G outright

I still think we'll finish 2nd to Michigan State. However, it's far from a forgone conclusion. We didn't have Oglesby at 100% for any of our losses. He's back to 100% and makes us better. I don't think it's out of the question to say we could have won 1, 2 or all 3 of our losses with a healthy Oglesby. I'm not just talking about the 3s he made yesterday. He brings more than scoring to the table and has 2 years of Big 10 experience which is always helpful...just my opinion.

A lithium IV drip should be required for Iowa message board posters. We were "exposed" in the Bahamas and by ISU, now we're winning the BIG.

As much as I would like to agree with this, I have to decline.

I've been around the block a few times and I truly believe this team has "turned."

Turned = somewhat difficult to 100% quantify other than to say they now have "it." Learned to close, getting better each game, rocketing past tepidness to confidence to non-arrogant cocky. What do they lack? Nothing that I can see sans FT shooting I suppose. Add to that, no better coach in the league than Fran.

I really believe it. I.e. they are a far different team than in the Bahamas and even @ ISU. They haven't peaked.....not even close IMO. All the pieces are coming together.

BTW, as a pharmacist, I would recommend either of the two long-acting oral products: Eskalith or Lithobid.....same mood stabilization without all those nasty staph-carrying needles and tubing.

How was Iowa exposed in those 2 games? Nova went nuts from 3 in the 2nd half and beat Iowa in OT and Iowa gave the game away in Ames. Iowa was also playing without a player who has been one of their most efficient offensive players since he returned from injury in those 2 losses.

This is the way I see it. With kirk there was some red flags when he was winning that made me wonder if he was really a great coach or if he got a little lucky. With Fran he brings everything to the table. Brings in good players, good with player development, good with player retention, good at finding under the radar players, he's a players coach, and he plays a great style of basketball.

I know there are people who think the same of kirk but I didn't. I was always a little skeptical.

Not to turn this into a ******* match, but you do realize that KF has finished in the Top 10 4 times and in the Top 25 another time. He has won 2 conference titles. Fran has not done any of those things. So KF lucked his way to 4 Top 10 finishes? He must be the luckiest guy ever to walk the planet. If Fran gets 4 Top 10 finishes in the next decade we can talk.

Why can't we just be happy with what we have? Competent coaches in both sports who seem to run clean programs.

Fran's contract is good now. Iowa should compensate him accordingly should Iowa win a conference title or make a deep tourney run. But I doubt Barta will be handing out 10-year extensions.

'02 wasn't lucky but the other 3 kinda were. '03 we finished 5-3 in the conference so we were lucky to end with that high of a ranking because moat years that's good for maybe 20th. In '04 all of or running backs got hurt and we were probably a better team because of it. Not to mention the end of the cap 1 bowl was pretty lucky. No top 10 finish if not for that. No need to even list the luck it took in 09 to finish top 10. Although we did have a top 10 team that year because of Kirk's struggles with in game coaching we needed luck.

I do think he's a good coach and I'm happy to have him, I just think there were signs to not give him a long contract. I love everything about Fran and hope he retires here. Even if he never gets 4 top 10 finishes. Sorry to derail.

I'll just start the thread now. Save someone the time in a couple months. Now everyone can **** and moan and say to take it one game at a time. Have some confidence and have some fun with it. A season like this doesn't come around very often.

Besides...at SOME point, we WILL win the B1G "outright"...and A Previous Coach at Iowa won TWO BTT titles.

Stop this non sense! We should not be looking at anything but our next game Wednesday night at Michigan. If we look past Michigan we are looking at another 28 point defeat like last year.

Jon, please close this thread and ban the op.

Like. Thank you for bringing sanity back. I hope we win it. I think we might have a chance to. But we could just as easily finish 11-7 or 12-6. But I've learned to never make bold proclamations about Iowa athletics, especially to the upside, because it offends the Basketball and Football Gods. If Marble sprains his ankle in the Michigan game, not only should the OP be banned, but he should be sent to a North Korean labor and re-education camp.

I get what your saying and not trying to switch the focus of the thread but I find it interesting that you focus on luck going our way, but fail to mention that for every decent break we've have we've had just as many go the other way. Regardless of "luck" its still 4 top 10 finishes. Derailment over.

If Iowa was to win the B1G outright this year it would be the biggest Hawkeye athletics accomplishment since I have been alive (I was born in 1983). Bigger than the Orange Bowl win, bigger than the 2 Rose Bowl appearances under Hayden and bigger than all of Gable and Brands' national titles.

Your sarcasm detector is on the fritz. I agree with you; mocking the silly online mood swings was kinda my point.

Um, negatory ghost rider. Only way this season becomes the biggest in your lifetime is if we win the B1G and get to the Final Four.

How so? Iowa has yet to reach a Final Four or win the conference since I have been alive.

But you compared it to a BCS Bowl win and wrestling national championships, which is what he compares reaching a Final Four or winning the conference to.

To me winning the conference title is kinda neat, so is winning the conference tournament, but none of that compares to reaching the Final Four. Iowa last reached the Final Four under Lute Olson, I was little but the win over Georgetown is what got my attention and made me the Hawkeye fan I am today. Hawkeye fanaticism in this state would be unbelievable if they ever reached the Final Four.

If your parents didn't have this record (mine did) then you are not a Hawk fan. At best, you may claim TavernHok status.

Nope, I was a way bigger Hawk fan than either of my parents.

So is it safe for me to presume that you grew up in the western suburbs of Chicago and then went to Iowa? Because where I come from, everybody was a Hawk fan and it was handed down from generation to generation. Or did your parents not grow up in Iowa? Or perhaps they did grow up in Iowa, but they went to a certain Clown College. Something just doesn't add up.

We have it. Wisc, Mich State and OSU all suck bad. I cannot believe Indiana is beating Mich State at Mich State. Had Fran not ****** away the Wisky game, we'd be way in the lead. Who woulda thunked it...

Nope, born and raised in Iowa along with my parents. Mom never cared for sports and dad was more into baseball, but his parents were big Iowa basketball fans. I remember those Lute years quite well since they never missed a game. No clown fans in my family that I am aware of.

There comes a point in time where you have to find injustice and STOP IT where it sits. This was far too close to the ISU game, which I actually thought was horribly officiated equally but apparently I'm in the minority. Fran made a statement and he made it clear: You. Will. Not. Hose. My. Team. PERIOD!

I'm sure one of the issues he brought up was if they realize how hard it already is to win on the road. And don't act as if the techs cost us the game, come on lol. Oh! I get it! We lost by the same amount of free throws they made, is that it? People need to realize one thing about sports and one thing only: No series of events would repeat eachother twice. In other words, a baseball player who gets caught stealing right before a Home Run didn't cost his team a run. That series of pitches would have been different. If a football team chooses to kick a FG instead of go for it on 4th and 1, the series of plays would have been called differently.

And if a basketball coach draws a technical foul things go differently than had he not gotten it. The way things were going we weren't scoring again. Fran admitted he drew the first one on purpose but the hubris of that official must have caught him off guard. Either way, have you noticed anything since?? Sure, we lost that game. Sucks. But officials now know Iowa's coach means business. That hit we took in a game we had no chance of winning as we were playing likely has set up the run we're on.

If you're a leader, you stick up for your team.

Every. Single. Time.

A lot of this is what I was going to say. If Fran doesn't go for the technicals against Wisconsin, we might lose the game anyway. And then perhaps we don't get the Ohio win either. You never know.
