Iowa Will Soon Have 9 Wins for 2010

Technically the death penalty was supposed to stop all activities that are acts to the sport in question. In SMU's case, under the rule, football should have been banned forever. They still got a huge punishment from what happened though.

I remember the Death Penalty because my life was directly affected. When it happened, they fired the athletic director and Asst AD, and my step-father (I was in 4th grade), was hired as Asst AD, and we moved down to Dallas next to the SMU campus. It was no football for 3 years, then no scholarships, then limited scholarships, then back to full privileges after a total of I think 6 years. It devastated that program for almost 30 years though, as they just started being competitive, somewhat, the last two years. They had been a top 25 team fairly routinely, with the likes of Erik Dickerson, et al.

The actual NCAA penalty was only for one year of no football in 1987. SMU then opted not to play in 1988 either, but that was all the school's decision not the NCAA's.

I've heard this talked about a lot but what actually is the NCAA "Death Penalty"?

EDIT: Just looked up what happened to SMU....damn, didn't realize they had to not play an entire season. Sucks for the kids that weren't doing anything (if there were any)

Interesting observation on the SMU bit. My oldest cousin went to SMU and either the first or second year I saw him at Thanksgiving he was wearing a T-Shirt that said "SMU Football.....Undefeated" I was unaware of the deal at the time but he said it was a joke and that they had no losses or (wins for that matter) because there was no football team.
