Iowa vs. OSU 2009

Uh, yeah, we left points off the board. Stross dropping a ball IN THE ENDZONE that he catches 99 times out of 100, is leaving points on the field. He should have made that catch, it's the kind of play he made consistently for us for 4 years. There's no way that Murray shouldn't have made that chip shot field goal.

I agree that we can't say we should have won in regulation, because you're right: we make those plays, and the game is totally different, and impossible to speculate upon. But we shouldn't have been in the position of being down 2 scores. We can pretty confidently say that much, IMO.

Ohio State missed a FG, too. It's funny how nobody brings that up.

Also, on the game-tying drive, Vandenberg threw a pick-six (called back due to an off-sides**), and threw an ill-advised pass into triple coverage to Moeaki. Iowa was VERY fortunate, not only that Moeaki made the catch, but that the game didn't end right there, with an interception.

After Iowa tied the game in the final minutes, Tressel was equally as conservative as KF was on the final drive of regulation.

Ohio State fans could easily say that Iowa should have never been in that situation as well, but for different reasons.

I agreed with KF's conservative decision when I watched the game inside the Horseshoe, and I still agree with it now.

JV played very well in that game, especially considering the circumstances. I've said before that it's one of my favorite games of the KF era, despite the loss. However, JV made plenty of mistakes in that game, that I think many people tend to forget, which led to the conservative play-calling at the end of the game.

**The pick-six that was called back was not thrown because JV knew he had a free play, it was thrown because he was under pressue and made a bad decision.

How about Murray just drills that 26 yarder earlier in the game and we take a knee at the end of regulation? You could play the what-if game all day.

I think KF made the right call. While Vandenburg played better than I think anybody expected in the Shoe, there is no way they should have let him try and win the game in regulation.

Vandenburg was 20/33, 233 yards with 2TD/3 INT. He also had a pick 6 negated by an encroachment penalty and got extremely lucky when 2 Buckeyes missed an INT and tipped the ball to Moeaki on our game-tying drive. He was making mistakes late in that game.

KF deicided to put in on the shoulders of his defense in OT and it didn't work out. I still think it was the right call.

Let it go. VDB essentially got away with to INTs in the 4th quarter. You can re-hash things forever. We lost.

I'd rather be Iowa right now than O$U.
I have NEVER watched a replay of an Iowa loss. I can't for the life of me understand why any Hawk fan would want to, other than someone wanting to wallow in their own sorrows once again. Give it up...move onward and upward.

I watched the replay last night because it was a game many thought Iowa would get blown out in, and they almost pulled it off, even after being down 14 in the 4th quarter.

A game I will never forget. My wife and I are watching in a bar in St. Pete. We are the only Iowa fans among a lot of TOSU fans. We are in our Hawk gear and having a great time. Not many gave us much of a chance in that game with starting a Freshman QB. Lot of yelling back and forth as the game went on. At the final gun a lot of handshakes all around. Out that night, got many comments on how the Hawks and JVB represented. Only thing missing was a W in the shoe. Rare indeed. Now that we know Pryor shouldn't have even been playing makes it that much more bitter.
Karma for the Pryor and the vest. Niether will ever be part of another Big 10 game.

I will admit that I watched some of the first quarter, but I just couldn't watch it all knowing what was going to happen. It was a well fought game against a formidable opponent.

One of the worst decisions of the KF era. For two reasons. One, OSU had really given us more time on the clock than Tressel probably wanted. Our defense had made a great stop(remember those days) and rather than add to that momentum, Ferentz decided to sit on the ball. Completely killed the momentum that we had in the 4th quarter. OSU was able to seize the momentum easily in the OT after some dubious playcalling in the OT.

Second, field position. The poor punt OSU had meant we didn't have to take a bunch of risky chances with our play calling to get into field goal position. It's not like we had to bring out a Solomon around the end pass to gain some yards(why not bring up #2 worst call while we're at it). We could have used the middle of the field, worked the sidelines, whatever we wanted. Sure, it's possible that JVB could have thrown an interception. But it's not like that risk declined by going into overtime. It was the same scenario...except by going into ot, OSU gets to regroup and gets a chance to get the ball back as well.

Stupid, stupid, stupid.

People only call it stupid because of how it turned out. If we win in OT, those same people are calling KF a genius and talking about a great 14 point comeback.

It should have came as a surprise to nobody that KF did not try and win it in regulation in Columbus. That game pitted the 2 most conservative coaches in the conference and it showed in the last 2 possessions of regulation.

While his conservative style may have cost us that afternoon in Columbus, I believe it has won us more games than it has lost us.

Still pains me to think about...off the top of my head probably the 2nd most frustrated I've ever been with this staff (1st being the end of this year's Wisconsin game). The time management stuff has always been there...but Ferentz playing the conservative, NFL-way almost bordered on gutless in the 2009 OSU game.

If there wasn't a huge server crash on this site around that time I could probably drudge up a venom filled post I would have made shortly after the game...tempered slightly by the outstanding performance of JVB (and equally terrible performance by Trey Stross).

Who? I think you mean Trevor Strausse.

lol no. Read your original post I had responded to again and get back to me.
That's how I feel. It does'nt matter what they did, we did not beat them. Like everyone else is saying, "would of, should of, could of", I am not going to play that game. Now had it played out that way for the NC, yes I would have been upset. But I am not going to sit here and say oh, it was the refs or one second got put back on the clock ect. Not that it may not be true or in our case, not that we dont have a legit gripe. Just not my style I guess, so again I agree with - - - - nuts, we wanted their best..... Lifes not fair, get over it. Winning is about beating back all adversities, including cheating, bad calls by refs or what not.

Actually I meant Terry Strauss. My apologies...;)

Since the initial record was purged due to the server collapse in late 2009, I want to be on record as saying I thought it was a brutally stupid decision the second I realized that's what we were doing. It's almost like Ferentz wanted to oblige Tressel playing for OT by playing for OT himself...terrible.

While his conservative style may have cost us that afternoon in Columbus, I believe it has won us more games than it has lost us.

The following two scenarios will always stand out for me, when KF has gone away from his conservative style:

NW 2008 - KF called a timeout before halftime, to force NW to punt, and give the offense another possession. That's unlike KF. Brodell fumbled the punt, and NW scored a TD before half, giving them the momentum. (Iowa was up 17-3, prior to the fumble)

MSU 2008 - KF went for it on 4th down, rather than kick a game-tying FG. That's unlike KF, and Iowa was unable to convert, and lost the game.

Everytime this comes up, two lines of thought come into play. Those that were watching on tv are still screaming at Ferentz to go for the points. Those that were at the game, myself included, that were saying get to OT before one of those should be picks that were thrown on the last drive actually happens.

In my mind it's plain and simple if you were there you know it was the right call at the time. Too bad OT played out how it did, but one thing I forgot about was that KOK went for the throat on that first play of OT with a playaction pass and one of our guys running the corner route right to the pylon. Never have said it before and probably never will say it again, but I was happy walking out of this stadium after this game even with the loss.

Great post, very well said.

Fair enough, but what did people expect Ferentz to do? If you had been watching Iowa football for the previous 9 years before that you know that he was going for OT. Deal with it because that is how its going to be for as long as Ferentz is here and I am happy with it.

I assume this was a rhetorical question :).

Given the amount of time remaining, the field position, plus the fact that we were playing on the road (you play to win on the road, play for the tie at home), not to mention we held all the momentum at that point, I was disgusted that Ferentz decided to sit on the ball.

The OT only frustrated me more because you are basically telling JVB you don't trust him enough to try and get 30 yards in almost a minute, but then you put the ball in his hands in OT and try to throw (according to the post by the guy who was there) a long ball on the first play into a compressed field. Ugh.

Last thing I'm gonna say on this. If I remember right our first play on that last drive in regulation was a draw to A-Rob. I think he got 8-12 yards. I still believe if he breaks that for about 20 yards on the first play we do see Ferentz go for the win in regulation.
