I just watched the replay of the 2009 OT loss to OSU on the BTN Replay. I am a huge fan of Coach Ferentz and am so happy he is our coach. However, after watching the replay tonight, I am more disappointed than ever that we didn't try to win the game in regulation. 52 seconds, 1 timeout and 35 yards away from a chance to go to the Rose Bowl. It is soooo tough to even get in a situation like that, and then not even try to take advantage of it. I'm not one to usually let Iowa losses linger, but this one does, only for the reason that we chose to not even try to take advantage of a great opportunity.

Still pains me to think about...off the top of my head probably the 2nd most frustrated I've ever been with this staff (1st being the end of this year's Wisconsin game). The time management stuff has always been there...but Ferentz playing the conservative, NFL-way almost bordered on gutless in the 2009 OSU game.
If there wasn't a huge server crash on this site around that time I could probably drudge up a venom filled post I would have made shortly after the game...tempered slightly by the outstanding performance of JVB (and equally terrible performance by Trey Stross).

I know he dropped 1 TD for sure and Iowa ended up with a FG in the 1st quarter but did he end up dropping 2? Iowa should have won in regulation and should have never even been in that position in the first place.

We were down 2 scores in the 4th. To say we should have won in regulation is a stretch at best.

Not really, Iowa left 7 points on the field by dropping a TD pass and getting a FG and then missing a FG, it could and probably should have been 10-10 at half and Iowa up 17-10 after 3 quarters, if that happens the 4th quarter is different and Iowa probably wouldn't have found themselves down 2 scores.

As I understand it when at home you go for the tie to send a game into OT. When on the road you go for the win.

I understand the logic in the OH St. call. That said, hows the saying go nothing ventured nothing gained. Shot the line and went for broke.
But I do hate last years Wiskey as well, that was some harsh stuff there. I was livid, I mean come on how much do you make?? Pay me some free tickets to the games, and 4% of your salary and I will keep track of stuff like that for you. When you run a program based on solid football and execution, you cant drop the ball like that when you expect the kids to perform to their best, you have to as well. How did the kids respond? Minney, REALLYY?

Pryor should not have even played in that game. He received illegal benefits during that season. Iowa wins by 2 TDS if he doesn't play. That is what you should be upset about.....

Even if you say he should have caught that TD and shoulda made the FG.... the game would have been totally different at that point so you can't speculate on that. Saying 'should have been' is nearly always irrelevant.

Why do people have a problem with someone posting about something that others discussed in the past?
That decision to sit on the ball never made sense...especially since the argument was that he didn't want to put JVB in a position to lose the game in regulation, but then on first down in OT we put the ball in JVB's hands anyways. Add in the fact that if he throws a pick in regulation the D can come out and still stop them from getting into fg range or force a 50+ yard attempt with the int likely being at midfield. However, in OT a pick and the other team starts at a 42 yd fg and can get it down to mid 30's by simply doing 3 qb sneaks no matter what our D does.
Still doesn't make sense...
Oh yeah, lets not forget the major MO we had and everyone in the Shoe was crapping their pants when we got the ball back.
What like, I agree we were down by two, our D was holding (in the end), our O was gaining and to send it into OT knowing our D was holding. Nah you aint gonna hear it from me.

Uh, yeah, we left points off the board. Stross dropping a ball IN THE ENDZONE that he catches 99 times out of 100, is leaving points on the field. He should have made that catch, it's the kind of play he made consistently for us for 4 years. There's no way that Murray shouldn't have made that chip shot field goal.
I agree that we can't say we should have won in regulation, because you're right: we make those plays, and the game is totally different, and impossible to speculate upon. But we shouldn't have been in the position of being down 2 scores. We can pretty confidently say that much, IMO.
