Iowa vs. OSU 2009

Last thing I'm gonna say on this. If I remember right our first play on that last drive in regulation was a draw to A-Rob. I think he got 8-12 yards. I still believe if he breaks that for about 20 yards on the first play we do see Ferentz go for the win in regulation.

Picking nits...he got stuffed for no gain.

Iowa 1-10at Iowa33Clock 00:52, 32-Robinson, Adam rush up middle for no gain to the IOWA33 (51-Homan, Ross;7-Hines, Jermale).

OK. So I am convinced that if A Rob chews off 15-20 yards on that draw that we got for the W in regulation.

One more thing. 2679 is saying we needed 35 yards to be in "legit" FG range. How do you figure that? Murray missed a chipper earlier in the game and with the yardage you use that would be a 49 yard attempt.

I think that is another thing that played a factor in Ferentz mind. We needed more like 45 yards to be in "legit" FG range for Murray that day.

Murray's long in the 2009 season was a 48 yarder. I figured anything from there in would be a "legit" shot, meaning if given the chance to win the game, we'd more than likely try a FG from the 32 than try to throw a hail mary.

Then we need to weigh the pros and cons of having a RS Freshman QB, who has made some poor decisions and throws already in the 4th quarter, go at least 35 yards in the Shoe with a trip to the Rose Bowl on the line. And consider gaining those 35 yards would give you a small chance of making a FG that is one yard longer than his season long and the fact that Murray has a habit of kicking the ball low on longer attempts making it more susceptible to blocks.

Murray did hit a big kick in 2008 to beat PSU but multiply the pressure 10 times and that would be what you have in Columbus with a trip to Pasadena on the line.

Ferentz made the right decision.

If ifs and buts were candy and nuts.................

Ferentz was cautious with a Freshman in the biggest stage in all of college football. Can't fault him for that. I would have liked to see another play or two to see if something could break for 10-15 yards, but the overall decision is one that I can't fault. Hindsight is always 20-20, and if Vandy had thrown a pick, the same people upset that we didn't go for it would be upset that we did.

Ferentz made the right decision.

* Every kicker kicks the ball low on longer attempts; they have to get more drive than lift, so all longer FG attempts have a generally lower trajectory.

* Murray was 6-10 from 40-49 yards that year. I think I'd take 60% in that situation.

* We had 2 timeouts in addition to the 0:52 on the clock. I'm sure KF would have found a way to mangle the time management, but it bears noting.

* There are safe ways to throw the ball without putting the QB in a lot of danger or having to make him make a pinpoint throw.

* If we were trailing it would be a different story, but if we got a chance to kick that FG at the end of regulation, I don't think it'd be as pressure packed as you make it out to be. There would surely be pressure...but we've really go nothing to lose on the kick. If he makes it, we go to the Rose Bowl. If he misses, we go to OT. If it gets blocked, there is about a 0.5% (if that) chance that they are able to do something with it.

* Whether it was the right decision or not, KF took the safe, conservative option. Given that Stanzi was out and we didn't have Wegher (late scratch) and we had just fought back from a 2 TD deficit, I thought the decision to sit on it rang hollow.

JMHO.

No. I would have applauded the decision. I would have been disappointed in the result, but at least I would have felt that he put enough faith in the offense to let them try to win the game. And, depending on where the INT happened, there's a chance that OSU doesn't even get a chance to score due to time, field position, or both (or Tressel continues to play conservatively because he's at home and he's playing for OT).

I was very disappointed in KF's decision at the end of regulation.
I thought we really had some good offensive momentum at that point and that OSU was back on their heels. I realize it would have been a gamble but nothing ventured nothing gained. I presume that KF was also gambling that Iowa would win the coin toss, defer and then let the defense shut them down and give Iowa a great chance to win in OT....oh well.
