Then we need to weigh the pros and cons of having a RS Freshman QB, who has made some poor decisions and throws already in the 4th quarter, go at least 35 yards in the Shoe with a trip to the Rose Bowl on the line. And consider gaining those 35 yards would give you a small chance of making a FG that is one yard longer than his season long and the fact that Murray has a habit of kicking the ball low on longer attempts making it more susceptible to blocks.
Murray did hit a big kick in 2008 to beat PSU but multiply the pressure 10 times and that would be what you have in Columbus with a trip to Pasadena on the line.
Ferentz made the right decision.
* Every kicker kicks the ball low on longer attempts; they have to get more drive than lift, so all longer FG attempts have a generally lower trajectory.
* Murray was 6-10 from 40-49 yards that year. I think I'd take 60% in that situation.
* We had 2 timeouts in addition to the 0:52 on the clock. I'm sure KF would have found a way to mangle the time management, but it bears noting.
* There are safe ways to throw the ball without putting the QB in a lot of danger or having to make him make a pinpoint throw.
* If we were trailing it would be a different story, but if we got a chance to kick that FG at the end of regulation, I don't think it'd be as pressure packed as you make it out to be. There would surely be pressure...but we've really go nothing to lose on the kick. If he makes it, we go to the Rose Bowl. If he misses, we go to OT. If it gets blocked, there is about a 0.5% (if that) chance that they are able to do something with it.
* Whether it was the right decision or not, KF took the safe, conservative option. Given that Stanzi was out and we didn't have Wegher (late scratch) and we had just fought back from a 2 TD deficit, I thought the decision to sit on it rang hollow.
JMHO.
Hindsight is always 20-20, and if Vandy had thrown a pick, the same people upset that we didn't go for it would be upset that we did.
No. I would have applauded the decision. I would have been disappointed in the result, but at least I would have felt that he put enough faith in the offense to let them try to win the game. And, depending on where the INT happened, there's a chance that OSU doesn't even get a chance to score due to time, field position, or both (or Tressel continues to play conservatively because he's at home and he's playing for OT).
