Iowa vs ISU Recruiting in Iowa

The KXNO morning show has been all talk this week about whether Rhoads will leave for Pitt and the progress he's made at ISU in recruiting the state of Iowa. I've held back my vomit from painting the great roads of Marshalltown and today I've decided its time to release my frustration with some facts.

Here is the 2012 state of Iowa recruiting class according to ESPN:
Darboh3* Michigan Bound
James Harrington3* Cedar Falls Best offers from Ohio, Nevada, and Army (no ISU or Iowa offer showing)
Michael Malloy 2* Iowa commit
Collin Bevins 2*:ISU commit, only other offer from Iowa
Cole Netten 2* ISU commit no other offers shown
Nathan Criswll 2*: No offers shown ,Kicker
Barkely Hill 2* ISU committ Only other offer is Iowa
Charles Rodgers 2* ISU Commit: Offers from Minny and NIU

2011
Christian French 4* goes to Oregon
Iowa Gets two 3* guys in Austin Blythe and Henry Kreiger-Coble
ISU lands Jamison Lalk 3* and Darian Cotton 2* both with no other offers from FBS schools

2010
AJ Derby 4*: Enough said
James Kohler 3*: Ames OT who forgoes football altogether
Andre Dawson 3*: Cedar Falls RB, UNI Commit, Offers from Cincy, Illinois, Iowa, KU, Minny, NIU, Purdue, and Wisky
Brandon Scherff 3*: Already starts at Iowa
Matt Hoch 3*: Mizzo Commit
Brandon Jensen 3*: ISU Commit, only other offer from UNI
James Morris 2*: Enough said
Austin Vier 2*:Enough Said
Next ISU guy is Van Der Kamp

Seems to me like Iowa is still getting the recruits it should be getting in state with the exception of French and Darboh, who were wowed by the big stages at Oregon and Michigan. It's very evident 2012 is a down year for in state football recruits. This staff has been notorious for bringing in the hidden gems from within the state of Iowa and I trust them to pick those guys out when they come along.

If it is on KXNO morning show, by definition it is irrelevant. What a horrible show. Consistently bad

This I agree with however the caller that made the point about ISU beating Iowa in recruiting was a clown fan. Out of all the state of Iowa recruits that committed to ISU, two of them (Barkley Hill and Collin Bevins) had offers from Iowa. The main reason ISU is "beating" Iowa for in state recruits, is because the pool of recruits in Iowa is pretty weak this year. Much the reason why Malloy is our only in state commit. To be completely honest, ISU having so many state of Iowa recruits doesn't really mean much, and actually just shows that ISU doesn't have the clout yet to pull in big name recruits from out of state.

ISU is not beating Iowa on in state recruiting. But I have to say, if they do get more instate kids (because they have to, because they can't recruit good out of state players, whatever) maybe they will have an advantage in the rivalry game each year. If they have a roster full of guys that want to win the game, players that care about the rivalry, homegrown kids, then they could beat Iowa. Assuming that Iowa has out of state kids that have never heard of ISU. It's a problem, and I think it is the cause of Iowa's struggles with beating ISU.

ISU is 2-0 vs Iowa in-state on kids that have offers from both schools. That would be the definition of one beating another.

All the focus on star ratings.

The Miller kid that picked up an ISU offer last year enrolled early and contributed this season as a frosh. He was one that couldn't even get a response from the Iowa Football office when he sent tape to IC. Once ISU offered and he accepted his coach got a pouty call from Reese Morgan wondering why Iowa never got a shot.

Pretty sure he could have helped on coverage teams for the Hawks this year.

False. Iowa offered Bevins and Hill after they had committed to ISU. ISU did not beat Iowa for those recruits. If both schools had offered prior to a decision being made then it's a different story.

The only reason Bevins stayed true to his commitment was that he was told he'd have a shot to play TE. Kirk was recruiting him as DE/DT. The kid has a 7 foot wingspan, which has OT written all over it. He may make it at TE, runs the 200 and 400 in track, and is also on some relay teams. Time will tell, but is a good athlete. Ranked #1 at 285 in class 2a. Solid recruit for Clones. Could weigh 300 easily. Think he played football this year at around 250, and can add to that during wrestling cuz wrestles 285.

If you have ever been involved in the recruitment process or known someone who has, then you will probably agree that Reese Morgan has over-stayed his welcome. He usually has a list of 20 Iowa hs football players he calls weekly, shows interest, says promising stuff, but when signing day comes close if you have been dwindled out don't expect him to call and let you know where you stand, and definitely don't ever expect a return phone call. That is why so many Iowa HS coaches are put off now by him.

Contrary to that is Paul Rhoads. I knew one young man that was being recruited heavily by alot of heavy hitters in college football, including Iowa. He took a complimentary in-state visit to ISU and by the end of the visit his old man was dead set that Paul Rhoads was best person and most honest person he had met in the entire recruiting process. Had he stayed in-state ISU would have won that recruiting battle.

What this thread really shows me is how slim the pickings are most years in the state of Iowa for D1 recruits, compared to nearly every other Big Ten state. It's not even close to Michigan, Pennsylvania and Ohio.
