Iowa State hires Mark Mangino as Offensive Coordinator

Exactly, it doesn't show up on the scoreboard but the clowns are circling their enemies. Closing in that beautiful and historic stadium (2004 Big 12 North Co-Champions, folks. Can't deny the banners....well banner), somehow landing such an in demand and relevant offensive coordinator. Everyone wanted that guy, but you don't say no to ISU. A head coach that had a winning season in 2009, that's a resume that stands up to any coach. Finally, its all lead by Mr. Jamie Pollard. A humble man who gets the finest coaches in the land to lead his first class programs. Never has that man made things about himself or embarrassed the entire program with ridiculous bravado in the form of tweets or billboards. Good time to be a clown fan folks.

Not so fast my friend, they will going extremely slow, waiting on Mangino and all......:)

Now they have the two greatest coordinators in college football.
Rhodes is desperate Hiring a guy no one wanted to touch after his demise at KU. The guy is a good offensive coach but at what price? Is he going to continue to act the way he has over his coaching career?
Plus clone fans fail to remember that Herman is a very good OC as well and he couldn't help ISU. When you lack talent, it doesn't matter who your coach is.

What was Rhoads' pitch to Mangino, "Let's see, on offense, we have Lazard coming in as a freshman, then we have . . . Lazard coming in as a freshman. . .and, oh yeah, we have Lazard coming in as a freshman. . ., and did I mention that we have Lazard coming in as a freshman?"
I like ripping on ISU as much as the next guy, but they do have some talent at the skill positions. Bundrage is probably a better receiver than anyone we have.

Mangino can coach but I don't see this as the home run ISU fans do. It's a lose-lose IMO. If he turns that offense around, he's gone before year 3, to be a OC or a HC at a program that has a real football team. That could get ugly for Pollard because the fans might think Mangino is better than Rhoades. If Mangino moves on, it could cut the 22,000 season ticket sales in half!

Thought I'd take a quick review of Mangino's years at Kansas. Found these interesting tidbits 0n his Wiki page.
-----------------------------------------
[h=3]NCAA penalties and probation[/h] In 2005, the university self-reported to the NCAA that five major rules violations—including academic fraud—had been committed by some of the football team's student-athletes. In 2006, these major violations, along with four others that has allegedly occurred in other KU sports programs, contributed to the NCAA charging the athletics department displaying a "lack of institutional control". A graduate assistant was found to have supplied answers for some of the correspondence courses taken by some prospective recruits from junior colleges. As a result, the football program's ability to recruit players transferring in from junior college was reduced for two years; and, the program lost two scholarships for each of the 2007 and 2008 seasons.

[h=3]Internal investigations[/h] A separate investigation was conducted in 2007, related to Mangino's repeated parking tickets on campus and alleged verbal abuse and negative behavior toward campus staff issuing those tickets.[SUP][19][/SUP] In November 2009, the recurring issue of Mangino's chronic, alleged misconduct towards his players became the subject of an internal investigation by the University of Kansas Athletic Department. He was formally accused of boorish and violent actions.[SUP][20][/SUP] National sports media coverage of this increased already-mounting public pressure on the university to terminate Mangino's employment. After a prolonged period of negotiations, the university and Mangino's attorneys agreed on the buy-out amount that was large enough to secure his quiet resignation in December 2009.

The guy was out of football for three years, then TE coach at FBS. This isn't a home run hire.

If a guy doesn't get a look for that long after being a HC...there's a reason. He's got quite a trail of a-hole behind him. (no pun intended)

No probably to it, he is better than anyone we currently have in the program, of course that is not saying a lot.

Not sure how long Mangino has had weight issues, but he does have a kid so at some point his wiener did work...... I think Mangino could work if Rhoads doesn't eff it up.

Wow I searched hawkeyenation threads for Mangina... a lot of returns but not in this thread... 1st? Go Clowns!!

Don't understand all the hate for Mangino. He has been very successful as an OC over the years and should help the clones. He was able to take the past couple yrs off from coaching while his wife was battling breast cancer and spent last season coaching at his alma mater. (Youngstown St)
Wonder if certain Hawk fans would have made the same type of "fat" jokes if we had hired Rick Majeres instead of Lick??

For me personally, I have nothing against the guy except that now he is a clown. And knowing Iowa fans it is safe to say there is a lot of pots calling kettles black on this board, me included in regards to the fat jokes.

totally agree that for the clowns this is a tremendous hire. look at the guy he is replacing - can you even remember his name? Did you know his name prior to him being the clown OC? not a chance. Courtney Messingham? Who???

Had Mess been able to put up some points when needed, ISU would have won at least 10 games. The defense was a wall with a no fly zone enforced by one of the best secondaries in the country, but the offense did nothing. They only gave up 71 points once this past season and they only gave up over 40 in 6 games. Every game was winnable if Mess hadn't screwed things up.

there is a reason that the DC is treated Messianically.....I think. Of course, you could say the same for the HC. He came out again the OC after a game in a presser. I'm guessing Pauw and Courtney aren't best buds.
