Iowa Receivers Depth Chart

I think they'll have packages for situational football. They have guys for all different situations. They could have RVZ on one side Howard on the other with any number of guys in the slot in a 3 WR formation. Lester has lots of options with who to play. I don't think who starts will matter as much as who's getting more snaps. More 4th q snaps in a close game to be even more specific. I'm not sure week 1 we'll get a large glimpse into that either. I assume they'll be pretty vanilla and not try to show much until we play ISU

I agree. There might be one true starter, but I feel they'll look at matchups each game and some may get more snaps in particular games or who seems hot. I think it'll be by committee.

The true question will be if Gronk and the WR's will be on the same page as the routes can change with what the receivers see. Lester stated there aren't really hard routes like seen on paper. They have routes written down on paper but in the games, the WR's will change depending on where the defenders are lined up. I think Davis tried doing this when he came and for some reason the QB's & WR's weren't on the same page but that could be due to a variety of things such as QB's struggling or WR's struggling. I feel Lester will have this taught better with this group.

Shanahan's offense can be very complicated and it does take some time to learn and mesh all the skill players. If you have a smart QB, who can make quick reads and throw accurately to a spot, this offense can churn like butter. Brock Purdy is a perfect example. Average arm, average athleticism, smallish, but he reads and releases to a spot very well.

That all said, I really expect that Lester is going to simplify the packages, game plans, and play-calling the first few weeks. Scripted plays at the beginning, and several highly rehearsed shot plays in the middle of the game, but beyond that, a lot of base offense.

I am excited to see how he folds in hybrid WRs like Wetgen in gadget and package plays. There is enough speed and talent to draw from for Lester to get creative with some reverses and screens to some of the smaller guys with wheels

What I have liked hearing is that Gronk has the ability to change the defense's coverage where he can buy time instead of just throwing a hot route when pressure comes. They've stated he has the ability to move a bit to buy an extra 1-2 seconds where he can hit a skinny seam route down the field instead of just checking up. That would be huge. The guy has a lot of college experience!
