Iowa Press Release on Brandon Hutton Being Granted Release

Sometimes you burn players redshirt if you don't project them to play over the long term. It's one less year that they eat up a scholarship.

Hutton must not have progressed enough during his redshirt year for Fran to tell him he was going to be an integral part of the rotation. It happens. Just laugh at people on this board that base their decisions on HS highlight tapes or some game in the Prime Time League.

When you've been around "it" for most of your life, "it" becomes easy to recognize. Fran could have had him come in for purely defensive reasons, from the 2 to the 4 positions, for periods of the games when 1 player was killing us. And with his energy, hustle and attitude, he might have got a few garbage points.
But you go ahead and laugh, as we fail to make the NCAA tournament next year.

So you guys have never seen him play a second of BB and have decided that he was the answer to all of our problem.....smsh....it never stops.

BTW there will be another transfer, the Hutton transfer wasn't really that quiet of a thing. I had heard as much awhile ago, and actuall Dochmen alluded to a couple transfers in his podcast, so I'm sure he also knew Hutton was one of them.

Wow, do you really think a guy who is transferring because he wasn't going to see much PT next year, would've been the piece that pushed them over the top this year?

Why doesn't Fran have you on his staff asshat?

No. I think he was transferring because he watched other players get minutes while playing no defense. I can find out the reason he left, with 1 phone call. But I suspect I already know.

Who said we never seen him play?

I agree as we never know how the kids will adapt to playing at a college level. You can't always go by practices either as some players can tear it up in practice but get cold feet on the court during real game competition.

Dean you mentioned Dochmen said a COUPLE of transfers. I realize that you don't know but if you had to put money on it who would you think it would be?

I don't care to argue with you guys. I saw him play multiple times and had a chance to get spend a little time with him. He might not ever be an effective scorer but he brings a lot to the table in attitude, toughness and defense. Just don't cry about those things being deficient next season.
If he's having academic trouble, none of this matters. If there are legal problems, none of this matters.

Opps I missed that one, "legal problems". I certainly hope that is not he case and I may have left that off my list because of the Iowa environment and the coaching staff we have but you never know now a days. I don't thinks it's likely though.

I'm sure after the season ends the coach sits down with each player individually and tells them what they see for them the next year and in the future. My guess is Hutton didn't like what he was hearing from Fran and decided to transfer. The timing fits almost perfectly.

For those saying he was a lock down defender and Fran screwed up...are you basing that on his high school play? Guess I don't understand where people come off acting like they know more than the coach who sees them practice every single day.

This.

Yea I was excited for Brandon's toughness and athleticism. I'll definitely follow his career going forward.

With that said this type of thing is bound to happen in today's college BB. I'm still extremely excited for next years team!

There is already some crazy in this thread and it's only going to get worse. If someone is so inclined I would be interested to see the stats on each player that has left under Fran. I want to know how great they became.

Maybe you can find out if there were academic or legal issues when you make that 1 phone call

Seems odd. How would he not get a ton of playing time next year? Probably most athletic on the team that loses a ton this year. Hell Ellingson played a decent amt of mins on a good Iowa team despite barely contributing.

I left voicemail, already. I'm not going to share reason....cause fk you guys. Bit if there is a reason other than displeasure about redshirt/playing time, I will simply post "I was wrong, good luck to him".
Not sure how long it will take to get called back.

So tell me, what else does a coach have to go by other than how someone plays in practice? Is there some aura a player gives off that says "I can only play well in games"?

Don't know about all of them, but the three that left the team recently:

Kyle Meyer averaged 13.2 minutes, 2.4 points and 2.7 rebounds for Houston (22-10) this past year, playing in all 32 games.

Trey Dickerson averaged 4.7 minutes, 0.4 points and 0.4 rebounds for South Dakota (14-18) this past year, playing in 17 games.

Pat Ingram averaged 25.3 minutes, 3.5 points and 1.5 rebounds for Idaho (21-13) this past year, plaing in 25 games.

None really tearing it up and all at lower levels of competition than the Big 10.

If Hutton is a difference maker and is leaving for greener pastures, he will be the first one in 6 years to do so. That's not bad. Every other player that has left under Fran has left because they weren't good enough to play here.

I'm surprised at Dickerson's numbers. I thought he could have been good if he stayed.
