Iowa OC/DC Rankings Since 1999

I wish they listed a points per possession statistic. While not necessarily a perfect measurement stat for an offense as they can be bolstered by starting position, Pts/poss offensively vs defensively are more in line with the philosophy of Kirk ball. Total offense and defense mean jack shit to the style Iowa plays

I wish our offense was better. Cherry picking stats in order to make the offense look better don't mean jack. ;)
I wish they were too. It's no more cherry picking than Total Offense and Total Defense unless you show me the difference in statistical significance vs Wins between the two. I'd run the regression myself but I'm only on here when I'm at work and I'm not wasting away my personal time at home for you guys!

Too late, you already have. :p

I'll save you the time. Texas and Greg Davis ran a study on the top 10 teams of 2000 - 2008. Then a guy ran a regression analysis on those stats:

RANK STATISTIC COEFFICIENT
1 Scoring Offense .816
2 Scoring Defense -.811
3 Rush Defense -.767
4 Total Defense -.694
5 Total Offense .610
6 Rush Offense .485
7 Turnover Margin .425
8 Pass Offense .238
9 Pass Defense -.134

This doesn't at all address the statistic of points per possession for comparison against total offense/defense, which I mentioned should have a higher correlation with wins than the moderate correlation of adjusted figures in the study of Total Defense: -.694 and Total Offense: .610. It lists points per play, which, while similar to points per possession really favors big play teams over methodical/ball control teams. Average starting position would play a huge role in points per play as well.

I do like his idea of separating Offensive vs Defensive stats and trying to find a way to analyze them independently as they are definitely related to each other. The secondary analysis he suggests at the end is where we should see some insight that is much more meaningful. I'd like to do/see a regression for all FBS teams and not just the top 10 but that would take weeks of data entry, but I'd be interested to see the comparison. Wish I had more time! Thanks for sharing

Cephus may have made one play too many. Think I read where it's going to trial now. That would put his season, and possibly more, up in the air.

Then again in 1984 Illinois' Craig Swoope was found not guilty on the day before the season opener for a similiar charge and was on the field the next week. God knows how much HC Mike White and/or the boosters paid to speed up the trial and grease the lawyers and judge. They were the sleaziest program in the BIG in those days.
A few years later they brought in Steve Feagin. He's currently playing the prison league for rape.

Former DePaul standouts Teddy Grubbs and Skip Dillard may be playing that same league. Grubbs for rape, Dillard for a series of robberies, some armed. Mark Aguirre, Terry Cummings, and Bernard Randolph were the lucky ones to come out of that program with their noses clean.

Good thing Dave Corzine graduated before these guys came to DePaul! :)

Corzine was similiar to the Whopper. Billy Paultz, kind of a poor man's Bill Laimbeer. All had long NBA careers because they played to their strengths and played cerebral. Mike Gminski was that type of player as well.

I see your Mike Gminski, and raise you a Kent Benson. :)
