Iowa nets $55k from Orange Bowl; but band cost nearly $500K?

I've never met Kirk Ferentz, but Hayden Fry went out of his way to thank the band, cheerleaders, poms and Herky every year. Even attended the band banquet with Shirley a few times.

I chatted him up after a bowl game once, and he said "the band will always be invited to these games, as long as I'm here".

For what it's worth.

As far as I know, the only thing that the athletic department pays for in the actual music department is the Golden Girl's scholarship as that is actually an athletic scholorship and she is subject to all of the athletic rules and regulations.

A few years ago, when the band got new uniforms, the Athletic department chipped in some of the cost, thought they did cancel the road B10 game as a result.

Ferentz has always seemed supportive as well. Every year he comes to camp to speak for 15 minutes or so.

Every year...at band camp...

Epic Fail...

The marching band at college football games is an irreplaceable part of the culture and tradition of college football. That's like saying get rid of the cheerleaders or banning tailgating. It's all part of the gameday atmosphere, and cannot be tampered with.

Agree. The band is one of the things that makes college football so much more enjoyable than the NFL.

Besides....the kids in the band work VERY hard during the year. They put in a lot of time during game week. They are out there in the sweltering heat of band camp and the early season games. They get no scholarships. I believe they only get 1 credit hour.

If the football teams goes to a bowl game...the band should be there, too.

You know what I hate the most about college football?

The never-ending 20 minute half-time and the useless, worthless band.

If I want to see a band I'll go to a concert. They are an annoyance at a football game. I'd rather listen to rock music during breaks. Not teeny-bop crap either. AC/DC. Green Day. You get the picture.

I know, I know. The band is "tradition." Yeah, so what. Lots of traditions suck. This one sucks especially hard.

Plus, the band chews up a bunch of scholarships which would be better used for academics. It is, after all, a freaking UNIVERSITY. At least some of the athletic scholarships pay for themselves.

You want to play an instrument in front of crowds? Join a symphony or orchestra. But for the love of God divorce it from football.

Seriously...Iowa got 1.9 mil budget to travel to orange bowl and nearly 500k went to pay for the band making the trip?

NCHawker's Band Cost Wild Assed GuessBand Members75Room per night $ 150.00 Est Cost per night $ 11,250.00 Four Nights $ 45,000.00

Ground Transportation $ 500.00

Meals / day30Meal cost for 1 day $ 2,250.00 Total Meal Cost $ 6,750.00

Airfare $ 450.00 Airfare x 75 $ 33,750.00 TOTAL COST $ 86,000.00

So I gues you have to guess that I wiffed on the Hotel and meals by a HUGE MARGIN...

Looks like someone allocated other costs to "the band"

And nearly $90k for "administrators" who traveled with the team? WTF? Who was that? Where they'd stay? How much did they eat?

I am guessing a much nicer hotel than the team, and whatever they wanted to. With a show or two thrown in to pass the time.

I wish the kids in the band had the opportunity to go pro. I'd love to hear a marching band at NFL games.

I played a mean triangle and thought about leaving early... unfortunately I suffered a career-ending hazing injury and missed my window.

Probably a few $K for transporting all the band equipment.

The HMB gives out only one scholarship, and that goes to the twirler.

Band and staff total about 250 people. Expenses include travel, hotel, meals, transporting a semi-truck of equipment, and bus transfers to rehearsals and numerous events for a week. Divided by 457k = $1,800 per person.

That's cheaper than most of Jon's 3- and 4-day packages. If it's "ridiculous", what SHOULD it have cost?

I am guessing that they put them four to a room, which would have been on par with our quad rates.

I remember a post on one of the boards some years back where a parent of a band member was irate that their child didn't get to go to a bowl game that year (2007) and was ripping Ferentz for it. One of the more comical threads of all time...up there with Mulvaspills.

You know that is only $3,300 per band member. Flight hotel and food that is not a lot. They also had to ship all the instruments etc. It was worth the cost…..

Probably a few $K for transporting all the band equipment.

Plus the airlines are now forcing large passengers whose body extended beyond the armrests to buy two seats so that certainly increased the cost. Unless of course they flew Southwest and the flight isn't oversold and in that case they would receive a refund for the extra seat charge.

Yes people, this is a fat joke about band members.
