Iowa lands NJ DE

Not even August yet and we're stealing away mid-major recruits...

Preparing myself for the inevitable subtle jab that Sam Mckewon at the OWH will take at this one.

Never mind, I found my answer.

Florida Atlantic, Western Michigan and Massachusetts.

really? good god....

These are recruits Iowa is offering and getting commits from based on junior film. In other words, these are first line targets for them.

Say what you will about last year, but Kirk has done a phenomenal job of finding diamonds in the rough and then developing them. One of the biggest reasons Iowa is in the mess they are right now is DL attrition they had when Kaz was in Iowa City. It removed all margin for error and Iowa cannot reload quickly like that.

But they have been excellent talent evaluators since they got to Iowa City, of that there is no denying.

If Iowa gets this kid in mid January with those offers, it's a fallback. But not in mid-July and five to seven rides left total. He is someone they want.

You are wasting your time. You can tell these guys over, and over, and over again these things......all they look at is stars, and the Mid Major offers.

So according to rivals Iowa has landed two three stars outside of the state of Iowa, zero four and five stars I see no reason to worry about the recruiting.

While I rarely get concerned about offers this early in the process, I think it might be a legitimate concern with Harris. Harris goes to school with at least 5 other BCS-level prospects, including Jabrill Peppers, a 5-star Michigan commit who was the MaxPreps freshman of the year and sophomore of the year in '10 and '11. I don't think it's an exaggeration to say that dozens of BCS coaching staffs have watched Harris' team play, yet Iowa is the only one that offered him a scholarship? What do they see that no one else has seen so far? In short, this isn't some unknown kid from Montana. This kid has highly recruited teammates and comes from a major, major profile school. That fact that he reports no other BCS-level offers at this time is very odd, IMHO.

A couple of responses to my own statement:

1. Perhaps with all the other talent on his high school field, he blended in to the background. Perhaps he's a legit star, but no one else has seen him because the other stars around him are shining so brightly. I'm not sure I like this explanation.

2. Perhaps Iowa is confident that the opportunity to practice daily against one OT going to Michigan and other going to Virginia Tech means that they think he will improve a lot over the course of this upcoming season. Perhaps they think he's only a borderline prospect now, but they are just sure he'll develop into a coveted prospect in a few months time. Maybe they wanted to get a commitment from him before other schools had a chance to see his senior film.

But thats not really the case. Look who Iowa has verbals from so far in the 2014 class.

Ellis- One of the top kickers in the nation
Hilliard- 17th ranked all purpose back in the country, also has a younger brother who will is a very highly rated LB. Could pay even more dividends down the road landing CJ first.
Jones- Offers from Baylor, Texas Tech and Nebraska. Was a 4 star before being injured.
Nelson- Offers from Stanford, Notre Dame, Wisconsin, Arky, etc.
Pierschbacher- Probably the most impressive offer list for an Iowa verbal since Moeaki or Dace back in 2005.
Scheel- Has an offer from Nebraska along with ISU and Minny.
Truitt- Offers from Maryland, Syracuse and Tennessee.

This is about as good of a start to a class I can remember the Hawks having. Dont you people ever get tired of being so damn negative and whining all the time?

Ya know what? How bout we complain about the talent when Iowa starts to beat everyone they have more talent than on a regular basis.

Talent isnt the problem. How many kids have gone to NFL under Kirk?

KF runs a developmental program. The kids he has moved to the NFL have talent for sure - they wouldn't be playing D1 ball otherwise. The thing KF is able to do is take these kids to another level through development of their athletic ability and technical ability. To insinuate that he can't coach is a pharse. You see plenty of schools with vastly more talented squads not succeed. See Michigan for a local example.

No one offered this kid I'm guessing given his position and Iowa's knack for taking guys his size and developing them into athletic defensive tackles. This kid has defensive tackle written all over him. right size that Iowa looks for, and good speed and quickness.

But haters gonna hate.

It doesn't take long for the haters to hijack a thread about recruiting......

I think you and I are in agreement about recruiting. However if posters dont think Iowa is doing a good job recruiting how is that hijacking? Its not hijack just because they dont agree with you.

I think Iowa is doing a fine job recruiting. Ive said that many times. I dont think there is any reason to judge who Iowa recruits because they have proven they can produce talent.

When Iowa loses to teams with less talent do you think thats not on the coach?

IMO, it's hijacking when it's a thread celebrating and/or informing of a certain recruit.

If you don't like the job KirFer and co. are doing on the recruiting trail, start a separate thread and voice it there.

Don't hijack a thread about individual recruits. Today's "unknown" could be tomorrow's success story.
