Iowa HS Wrestling Tourney...why jack with it?

Yeah, I see that the IHSAA says that moving the duals to the same time as the individual tournament is to help cut down on missed classes as well as for the state duals to have less of an anti-climactic feeling...

But don't mess with one of the best things in American sports.

Move the state duals to the end of January, then leave February all about qualifying for the traditional tournament...and then smashing the traditional tournament into three days...some of the hours these kids will be wrestling at is a complete joke.

Then there is the wear and tear factor, and schools like Southeast Polk having planned to wrestle their JV team at the state duals, dating back to the fall.

Big time fail here.

Jon I somewhat agree with what you are saying. I personally like the 3 day traditional state like when I wrestled at Vets. I think it makes more sense to use the old 3 day format rather than this new 3 day format. Back in the late 90"s for instance all classes would wrestle Semi Final matches on Friday night which made it more fan friendly. I was in class 1A but to this day still like to watch the 2A and 3A kids as well as 1A. As a competitor the semi finals was almost better than winning the finals because Fri night atmosphere was just crazy. I also noticed these crazy start times for the semi finals on Friday night. Why the hell start the last round of semi's at 9:30pm? We started at 6pm and all 3 classes were complete with semi's around 9:30. Not just starting at 9:30. Bone headed call on the IAHSAA. I like how MN does it with the dual teams wrestling the same week but maybe the format for IA needs to be tweaked some.

They did it to pay their 6 figure salaries.
This is a total money grab with the goal of selling a lot more tickets!

Nothing but a money grab by the IHSAA and it has ruined quite a few schools chances to claim a state team title.

We always expect the highest character and best behavior from our kids, but then the adults turn around and pull c**p like this and we wonder where the kids get it from.

How is it a money grab? The wrestling tournament starting on Wednesday, going over four days...they had it that way the old way, and then the extra tourney in CR at a later date..I am probably missing something here, so help me out

They didnt get many fans to the Cedar Rapids event.
This will draw more because more people are in town for the main event.

ALso you cant do it in JAN because you would not know who won the sectionals.

Pistons has it right. 4-5K showed up for the deal in CR, here they know they'll get a lot bigger chunk. Typically almost 80,000 pay up over the three day deal in DM, add another 10-15K for this days full event for all classes and you've got a great reason to mess up a good thing.

a month before the tourny is when they need to have it, one week rest then sectionals, districts and state

You cant do it until sectionals are over!
You get the teams in the tournament through sectionals.

Have the individual tournament Wed. - Fri. and then do the teams on Sat. (only one weigh-in required). This would get the IHSAA their extra $'s but also let the kids go after their own titles before risking some type of injury for a team one.

I think crap is ok on the board

Wednesday in DSM was gonna bring in over 10K to begin with...so you already have those dollars in the coffers. I am still not convinced its a better $$ play

I’m personally not in favor of the current format. Coaches and wrestlers want the individual state titles most and will do what is necessary to give them the best chance to do that including sitting their best individuals and resting them and avoiding potential injury. I have to say I’m very disappointed in teams like Southeast Polk making a complete mockery of the current format though and wrestling their JV, especially when they’ve earned the #1 seed. For state duals to have any true legitimacy it the current format, all teams that qualify need to man up and agree to wrestle their best guys. If you’re not prepared to do that as a team, then forfeit your spot to the next highest placing team that agrees to wrestle their full varsity lineup. It’s an insult to qualify and then refuse to compete with your best wrestlers. All that being said, I do wish they would stick with what has worked well for so long and go back to the old format.

Agreed Gabe, it was always a fun weekend in CR with the team tournament and the little kids the next day. That's the way it should stay.

I thought that they moved this because the 5 seasons center in CR is under construction right now and that these were the only dates available at Wells Fargo Arena?

someone is always not going to like the format so why not just have one big tournament that last a week...invite only dual tournament but have like top 25-30 schools in each class compete for 3 days or so then move on to the next class and host it at UNI similar to the D1's

For 3A this year, they selected the 16 teams to participate in the Regional duals by having Coaches vote. They did not have any sectional winners to go by. Granted, selecting 16 teams out of 48 is much easier in 3A than it would be for 1A or 2A. Many other states run their dual tournament in January. Iowa should do the same.

Also, how are they missing less classes if they do the tournament the next weekend? I am sure that many athletes for the duals left school early Tuesday and will be missing classes Wednesday through Friday. That excuse does not hold water.

The GYM CLASS had Mark Ironside and Dan Gable on yesterday. They asked them what they would do with their individuals that qualified, IF the dual tournament was the day before. Gabel commented that he would have his wrestlers ready to go.....but stopped short in saying that he would have them wrestle.
