Iowa Could Dominate

No. @pythagoras is @Joshbrown

The only things I hold against @InGoodCo are his autographed Ferentz portrait, and that he never tried La Juanitas after I told him to, even though he drives through SC all the time.

Oh crap - dude I tried it. I actually forgot that it was YOU that told me to try it. It was amazing. Long ass line and busy as hell, but the tacos we're out of this world!

Yearly there are generally 4 good to very good teams in the East (UM, MSU, PSU, Tosu). All with large stadiums. IMO, each good team in the west should have the same opportunity to play at least 2 of them.

I have been saying the same thing since the conference went East/West. Wisconsin, Iowa, Nebraska & Northwestern should each get two of UM, MSU, PSU, OSU. That being said, I don't feel sorry for Nebraska. When the conference went East/West Nebraska administration and fans practically begged to run the gauntlet. Nebraska needed a schedule worthy of their status. They got one. They need to shut up and take their ass pounding.

not us. Yes...the f'in Badgers are probably gonna win, what do you want from us unknown?!!!!
I was just curious to know where you think your upgrades would be. You butchered Tosu last year, I know you will field a good team. I was just wondering what gave you hope against Wisconsin in 2018. I don't say I wonder what the f'in Hawkeyes will come up with to give you hope.

oh they won't SHUT the hell up about how tough their schedule is this season. Iowa went 7-5 vs a much tougher schedule then they have this year LAST season and was borderline top 25, yet we just kill Ferentz for not being better and don't even really take that into consideration. It was just another ho hum year, IMO, it was pretty solid for the teams they faced. Could have done without the Purdue debockle but they ended up pretty decent.

Wisconsin's very own Nate Stanley gives me some hope. He played about as bad as you could play last year against you guys. I just think we were sideways that day and this season I think it's the game circled by players as the measuring stick. I think they'll be up for it.

Stanley is THE GUY we missed on during the coaching carousel we were going through back then. Anderson had no respect for Wisconsin HS players. Chryst TRIED HARD to flip him when he was hired. That said, a QB is only as good as his receivers. I'm really not sure you had them last year or this for that matter. You have to have multiple and it has been a while since either Iowa or Wisconsin has. I know Wisconsin has this year, not sure of Iowa. Thus some of the question.

BTW, during my years in Iowa, I was VERY impressed with the ball being played there by a select number of HS teams yearly. Same ones generally but isn't that the case country wide? The populace is just so much smaller. Even in comparison between Wisconsin and Iowa, it's almost 2 to 1.

I'm honestly curious on this, and not trying to be an a$$, but what do all of you think will turn the results of the Iowa/Wisconsin game around? It's at Kinnick, but Wisconsin's had recent success there. From my perspective, it is hard to say your O will be better and I'm not sure your D will be much better.

Wisconsin MAY have issues in the D line and at DB but we've recruited well in both those areas and have some players with experience waiting in the wings for their shot. Offensively, I can't remember a year where we've been this stacked with this much talent AND experience. About the only spot that I can think of where we MIGHT take a step back is at HB/TE and quite honestly I'm not sure we don't have guys who will EVENTUALLY be better there.

It's likely that it will be a good game, most Iowa/Wisconsin games are, but I just don't see us losing this one. Hell, we turned the ball over 4 times last year, 14 points for you, and still beat you by 20. Really , not trolling here, just would like to know your assessments of how the Iowa team of 2018 will be an improvement over the Iowa team of 2017.

My honest assessment of Wisconsin in 2018 from 2017.
QB better all around with another year under Chryst's wing.
OL better than the very good line of 2017
TE(inline) will be at least as good
HB/TE maybe a little poorer but with the chance to be more explosive.
RB Better (hard to say that with a 2000 yard RB returning)
WR For once, we've got numerous playmakers out the kazoo.

Defensively
DL a little worse maybe a lot worse (depends on injuries)
LB as solid as always and will compensate for any weakness in the DL
CB potential but probably a little worse
S as good.

At this point the gap between the 2 programs is pretty large. Wisconsin is usually ranked in the top 20 and often in the top 10. Iowa has rarely been ranked outside of 2015 lately. So its going to take a pretty big upset for Iowa to beat Wisconsin even though the game is at Kinnick stadium. Some will point out that Iowa thumped Ohio St in Kinnick. Well Iowa also got thrown around by Purdue in Kinnick and were in dogfights against North Texas and Illinois for large portions of the game in Kinnick. Wisconsin has won the last 4 games there.

The best chance I see for Iowa is if Ferentz doesn't coach scared (he often does against Wisconsin) and realizes he can't win the physical, phone booth game with you. Iowa hasn't matched up physically to Wisconsin since 2010. He has to aggressive the entire game with the pass. Specifically quick patterns to try to negate the pass rush Wisconsin always generates against Iowa. That is the only way to attack the Badgers.

I don't think your QB is good. You rarely have a QB that is the difference. Tolzien as a SR was the only QB that has been good against Iowa. They missed Wisconsin the year they had Wilson. The rest are pretty meh and Hornibrook falls into that category until proven otherwise. He did his best to win the game for Iowa last year. Ohio St played about as bad as they could have played in the B1G championship game on both sides of the ball and he couldn't get it done then either. In fact, he did about as much as he could to help Ohio St win. If Iowa's DL can't get to him maybe they'll have a shot but thats a very big if. Wisconsin's OL will be dominant this year. So dominant I really don't think it matters who your QB is.

Delany had the opportunity to put MSU (they didn't mind) in the west with us. UM objected because they wanted to be able to play BOTH MSU AND Tosu. Now the West is suffering for him rolling over for UM just as he rolled over for PSU when we brought on two weaklings in Rutgers and Maryland. Well, he did want to build his Ivory tower near his stocks I suppose.

Almost every year a bunch of these threads start about how the Hawks are probably going to go places "because, despite weaknesses in [insert position here], we have strengths in ]insert position here] that'll carry this team through" and it never pans out. The last time the Hawks had a good year, everyone was preparing for a losing record before the season started.

Bottom line is that every year there are things people can rave about. Kirk's just gonna keep on Kirkin' at slightly above .500. Enjoy the wins, shut the TV off and rake leaves when they're dropping hot turds on the field. That's our destiny and analyzing it is just folly.

Didn't really work out that way in 2002, 2004, 2009 and 2015, did it?

Kirk has the occasional "great" season.

Like your feedback. But keep in mind Hornibrook was a sophomore and QBs do improve under Chryst's guidance. He was sensational against Miami following the season break. If you compared stats between Hornibrook and Stanley you'd see one glaring weakness (INTs) but the rest of the stats would favor Hornibrook. I'm not THAT dumb not to recognize that having an awesome running game helps. That said, there's absolutely no reason to think we won't have even a better running game in 2018. Coupled with the return of Cepheus (you didn't get to see him last year due to injury) and some outstanding talent that only got better as the season progressed at WR, it's really hard to believe Wisconsin's pass game won't be a heck of a lo better when we face you at the end of September.

You are right about our inability to recruit a 4 star QB. We got one that multiple "elite" programs wanted in this class. IT comes with having the running success we have had. Hornibrook isn't far off, though, and I wouldn't sell him short. He's had his learning curve that comes from his and his WR's youthfulness. I'd suggest you don't sell him TOO short, anyway. Personally, I have little worry about the O being MUCH better than it was in 2017.

I think you are right about Offensive game calling though. Chryst isn't a guy that calls a lot of exotic plays but he always somehow sticks in an understated surprise or two. Don't know if it's just holding back for the right moment or what? Haven't quite seen that from an Iowa team.

One thing that doesn't get brought up about last year's coaching changes is they adapted the passing game to the strengths of their receivers and tight ends, rather than try to mold the players into Greg Davis's system. I have to wonder if Nick Easley would have flourished in Greg Davis's system. I also wonder if Fant and Hockenson would have figured so prominently in Davis's schemes.
