Iowa Basketball and the AP Poll

Do the Big 10 coaches vote on a preseason order of finish? If so I wonder where Iowa will land. I guess I wonder the same thing about what the media's predictions will be for next year.

I believe they pick the top three or so, but I don't think they rank the teams one through twelve.

Yeah, there will be early departures...obviously don't know how many. None of this preseason stuff will happen until next fall when the rosters are set. I will be interested to see where we are expected to land in the pecking order after the dust has settled.

Off topic (totally) - I wonder how long Greg McDermott will last at Creighton. They are moving from a mid major to a major conference and Greg will have Doug only 1 more year...if he's lucky. He seems to be better suited for coaching at a mid major. I don't think he has any Big East caliber players returning if Doug leaves after this season...just something I was thinking about.

Wow...7 years since that NW St shot and not one AP ranking. I need to share this with my wife as I think she thought I overreacted when the dude hit the shot.

Jon, thanks for the excellent synopsis of Iowa basketball. For most of the 60's and 70's basketball was about the only Big Ten sport Iowa was competitive in. There just wasn't the support for athletics from academic side. There wasn't any investment in facilities of any consequence. Iowa fans owe Bump Elliot a huge debt of gratitude for turning around the athletic programs.

In the days when few games were broadcast nationally Iowa was one of the teams that would be televised. It was quite a compliment at the time to be seen by a national audience. Today everyone seems to be on TV.

I do believe the basketball facilities did not keep pace, but Iowa was so far behind in football facilities and salaries that the resources had to go toward football and we all know football pays the bills. Fran didn't have a practice facility until this year and he didn't let it get in his way or change what he wanted to do.

Actually, the practice facility opened only 15 months after Fran arrived,so he was able to recruit kids by telling them that the new facility would be open by the time they started school in the fall. His first real class of Aaron White,Josh Oglesby and Gabe were only on campus a month when the new facility opened.

Iowa needed the right coach, with the new facilities to have a chance....we got both, and off we go!
It also did not hurt that Mike and Woody were instate(AAU) top 60 players just as Fran was gettiing it going. If they had been like Barnes and Paige...too highly ranked. Woody and Mike were just right..gettable top talents for a dedicated recruiter like Fran.

Now, the Iowa native recruits are drying up for a few years, after Jok. That means Fran needs to strike gold out of state, but luckily, he is up and rolling,so I think he can make that happen.

Good research and write-up. Nicely done. I was surprised that the Hawk basketball had those types of AP numbers.

Does that mean there will be a revision regarding the ranking of MBB programs/coaching jobs in the B1G?

There will continue to be native Iowa recruits IMO. One or two guys seem to surfance every year...sometimes more.
