Iowa & Alabama

Iowa and Bama seem to be finding themselves in similar type disappointing situations this season after impressive years last year. Last year bama has the perfect season going on to win the national championship. Iowa has a huge year with an impressive Orange bowl victory.

Both Bama and Iowa have very high expectations for 2010-11 due to returning a good number of starters on both sides of the ball. Some pre-season predictions actually had Iowa and Bama facing off in the NC. At the very least both teams were expected to see another BCS bowl.

Now with the end of the regular season in sight and Iowa having 4 losses and Bama having 3, both teams find themselves out of contention for anything very relevent (not in BCS talks). I know it's disappointing for hawk fans, I would guess it has to tickle at least that much for Bama fans as well.

When looking at the expectations that were had by nearly all of us from the git go, this season is going to tickle for a while. Just hoping we can get through the mini-gophers today, and finish the season on a positive note with an Outback bowl W.

I would love to as well - I work with a typical mouthy Alabama fan - I just don't see Bama dropping to the Outback - My guess is they are the third pick of the SEC and go to the Capital One - unless Arakansas has a big win over LSU - then it is up in the air.
 
South Carolina will be in the Championship game and they beat Bama. I'm not saying they will be picked ahead of Bama, but they should be.

Should and will are too very different things - I think Bama will travel better and they have the same record - (SEC east is not good).
 
Arkansas v LSU is a big game for bowl slots. The winner puts themselves in good position for the number 2 slot in the SEC pecking order and a possible Sugar Bowl birth. However, if USC beats Auburn next week, then that spot would be the Cap One. The thing about that is the last time Arkansas went to Cap One they did not travel well. So the SEC and the Bowls might rather have AR in the Cotton, where they would travel in droves.

Which means the likely SEC reps in Cap One and Outback are Bama, USC, and LSU, with an outside chance of Florida. Although the Gator would be salivating over Florida and USC's trip to the SEC championship game might limit their fan support for a bowl game.

where is the cotton in the pecking order? My assumption is it is this:
Two teams in the BCS
Then Cap one
Outback
Cotton
Gator?
 
Cap One is definitely 3, but after that Cotton and Outback are pretty much even. The SEC does things a little differently though. They try to work it out so their teams are slotted the best for travel. Hence, LSU, AR, and Ole Miss are more likely to go to Cotton than USC, or Florida.

LOL what?! are you talking about the lesser bowl games?
 
Heh, heh. Yep, I live in SEC country so Iowa playing one of these teams is kind of significant for me. Some teams more than others.
 
well, yea... but the SEC doesn't really call the shots on the bowls. They can maybe suggest who they would like to see where- but the bowl slotting is BUILT a litte differently in the SEC where 3,4,5 can all be chosen based on the preference of the particular bowl.

It looks like it is also suggested that the Cotton bowl select a West team as well.
 
Yeah, both of those is what I meant. The Big Ten is a little more concerned with standings than the SEC in their bowl contracting. The SEC is more concerned with sending teams to the right bowl for maximizing travel, which makes sense considering their proximity to the bowls.

that makes perfect sense for them - us, on the other hand, all of our bowl games are far away except for Detroit - so who cares if Penn State is slightly closer to Jacksonville than Iowa City.
 
Its a guarantee that the SEC gets 2 BCS teams:
1. BCS
2. BCS at large, as mentioned LSU/Arkansas winner unless Auburn loses in SEC title game
3. Capital One - LSU/Alabama/Arkansas
4. Outback is always an east team (rematch with SC?) and Cotton is west team (Miss State?)
5. Gator - Florida

Is it a guarantee the Outback is always an east team, or just an assumption that usually works out that way? The reason I ask is we played LSU in the outback bowl, didn't know if they changed the rules. Also, didn't Northwestern Play LSU last year in the outback?

Northwestern played Auburn last year.
