Iowa AD doesn't discount possibility of Hawkeye-Cyclone clash ending

From the Gazette:

Iowa-ISU at risk in 10-game Big Ten schedule? | TheGazette

“One of the challenges of going to 10 would be if you’re ever in a scenario where you didn’t have seven home games,” Barta said. “How would we deal with that? That’s a significant amount of money to each of our bottom lines, having a seventh home game. It also has a big impact economically on the local economies. So, again, I don’t know exactly where we’ll end up, but we had a lot of discussion about the advantages and disadvantages of having nine or 10.

Iowa playing another Big opponent would more than likely draw higher national tv ratings nationally than Iowa vs Isu .

Iowa v ISU is of Iowa interest only. No reason not to end the yearly game. Maybe replace it with a bi yearly or five year game.
If the B1G drops FCS opponents then it may stay on the schedule.

I don't think you'd get a big opponent. You're only getting teams that'll agree to a game at your stadium, not a home and home.
So sir, I don't like it.

Why not play Iowa State in Arrowhead every year? Could that work?
Heh. More like Kinnick every year. It has always mattered more to the clones. Without the Iowa game or the Nebraska game, there is almost no reason for clone football to exist. Does it matter so much that they'd give up a non-conference road game every year? Hawks have no reason to schedule an away game at Jock Trash Stadium anymore. The money no longer makes sense, and the rewards for beating the clones (FBS's crappiest trophy and a win over a bottom feeder) don't outweigh the risk of having to go into Ames for the Clown Bowl every other year in front of 50k screaming animal husbandry majors.

Good, its always a bad loss and never a good win. Id rather play a team like Oklahoma/Texas or even an SEC teams every year.

If the B1G does go to 10 conference games, our only chance of ever playing a single other BCS opponent from another conference (reg season strength of sched) is to drop ISU from the schedule. That and the game can only hurt our national perception, which if the ultimate goal (actually attainable or not is another debate) is to some day become a "national power" or "national brand", the answer is obvious.

I guess I don't understand why Iowa would want to cut this game, if they have 10 conference games then that is 2 games left for the ISU - Iowa game. Especially since they are cutting out FCS opponents, why cut it?

Let's see here, risk a lose to ISU or Arkansas State/Central Michigan?

They are not worried about losing, they are worried about not having the home game. People need to keep a couple of things in mind.

1. Football is not just paying for football. It is paying for 23 other sports. I make a lot more money than I need to survive. I do not make a lot more money than I need for me, my wife, and my three kids. A pay cut for me doesn't just effect me. Football is the same.

2. Iowa would not be replacing ISU with Arkansas State. Iowa would be replacing ISU with a B1G team, and therefore, likely playing a tough schedule overall.

With the new recruiting rules and Sally Mason's comments on how the football program will be expected to fund any additional expenses incurred because of these new rules, it makes 7 home games per year that much more important.

I agree with #1, that is a great point. But #2, I don't understand. Iowa normally schedules multiple cupcakes (usually 3 - at least 1 FCS, agreed usually all at home) plus then ISU alternating home and away each year.

If they are worried about losing a home game, then they can schedule an Arkanasa state or Central Michigan or both they don't lose those home games because Iowa has away games against those schools. Plus if Iowa adds 2 more conference games, then that is 1-1 it would most likely be 1 home and 1 away, not 2 away. Then that is up to 5 home, 5 away games in conference, so those games will most likely be sell outs, true sell outs not an FCS opponent where they count tickets sold, not who is in the stadium). If Iowa is playing a 10 conference schedule then who is the other 2 games to get to 12?

As I stated above if they add both AS and CM that is 7 home games and 5 away games, same as a normal year right? If they choose ISU, then they alternate every other year so they lose one home game every other year.

Play ISU in IC 7 (home) - 5 (away), then next season play ISU in IC 6 (home) - 6 (away).

I don't see how that is so devastating to a program that makes as much money as Iowa does. Normally Iowa vs. ISU draw more people to the local economy than other games. A few years back they estimated that there were well over 100K possibly 120K people outside Kinnick tailgating for Iowa ISU, no other games do that.

Please correct the thread title.

It should read "Iowa AD doesn't dismiss the Hawkeye-Cyclone-clash-ending talk"

Thanks.
