Impressed/Not Impressed

Agree that Gatens and May have looked strong. I think Marble will be there shortly.

I worry about Basabe. I think we underestimated how much he was helped last year by (a) being the fresh young face in the conference and not having to live up to anyone's lofty expectations, and (b) having Jarryd Cole to both settle him down and to be the anchor underneath. I hope he doesn't hit a "sophomore wall" this year.

May, White, McCabe, have all been impressive, Gatens and Basabe, came on this last game.

Obviously the scoring is up, but the ball movement and spacing seem much improved.

I'm impressed the scoreboard at Carver-Hawkeye Arena is able to display over 70 points for the home team. I was starting to wonder about it the past few seasons. We'll have to check if it can go over 100 soon. ;)

it can go over a 100, i saw it last year, as for Gatens he got teamDefensive MVP honors last spring, his defense is defenitely good,
looking at it, there were 41 fouls in the 1st game and 43 in the 2nd
as i recall the opposing conference sends their officials for their away games in the OOC
I believe we won't see a BTcrew until the Creighton game or the UNI game

It will be a good year if Basabe can get to the line 8 times per game and keep hitting 94% of them.

Agreed, this is big.

Last year he improved his freethrows more than I think I can ever recall someone doing in the span of just one season.

He was terrible to start the year and by the end he was our second most reliable guy at the line.

not sure i agree with you duff, Gatens cmmitted to Alford when he was a sophamore, only May was a Lick recruit, Fran had the choice of keeping Marble and McCabe, as for Marble being a Lick recruit he was a legacy and would have come here no matter who the coach if he got a offer
May and McCabe are Iowan's and i believe they two were going to come to Iowa no matter the coach, again if offered, the Iowa coach no matter who it is will try to land the best Iowa player every year, and to prove my point about Marble, all you have to do is look at Steven Marble who walked on

also a disclaimer to my last post if you meant to include Archie and Brommer in that comment then it was clearly said in jest, with sarcasm undetected by me

I am not too worried about Basabe, last night A&T was putting five guys in the paint and making Iowa shoot from the perimeter, if Gatens, May, etc. can hit the outside jumper, it is going to open up that clogged up middle and then he can work his game. A little concerned about Cartwright's inability to shoot the deep shot, although it is very early in the season, I think that is the one part of his game that he really needed to improve on.

concerned about:

backcourt -- the team doesn't have enough strong ballhandlers.

lack of lateral quickness -- defense is going to be suspect against good teams.

interior defense -- is really going to be a problem.

point guard -- bryce is solid but has some real limiters. backups are sketchy.

'13-'14 should be a good team. we will continue to struggle until then (next year's class will need a year).

can't we just take it one game at a time before we declare the season is over at 15-16 wins. by my count we have a minimum of 29 more games to go and i expect this team to improve with each game, and the ability of bad teams leads to sloppy play,
so until the Creighton game wich will be a solid step up from these 3 teams, i am going to sit back and enjoy the games

no one is contending that the team will not improve

however, there are so many areas that need improvement that one can reasonably predict a ceiling for improvement

comparing this team to all the iowa teams I've seen since 1978, it ain't that good, and it won't be. that will not prevent me from watching every game I can get a web feed for, however.

I want to see how Iowa does in the Big 10 / ACC Challenge and hopefully they'll get past their first game against Clemson. Difficult to access talent against mid-major level teams.
