If you want to watch Cougill play right now

He will not be back so no need to make a case for him being back.

What does he do well? I can think his only strength is hitting 17-20 ft jump shots. I just can't even understand why he originally received a scholarship from Lickliter. Was there no discussion of him being lazy in high school? He was not that good of a player either.

He was Mr. Basketball in the state.

Look, before this turns into a thread where it looks like I'm defending the kid let me make this clear: I don't think he is a Big10 baller. He is a big body that fills a HUGE need on our roster. In a perfect world we would bring in a JUCO big man that has a ton more skills. I don't see that happening. Therefore I would rather head into the season with another body just in case of injury. Does he have two or three more years left?

I am a big body that fills a huge hole on our team, an outside threat. Only thing is that I can't run or shoot well.

But hey BC can't run or play defense and that doesn't seem to stop people from somehow thinking he would fill a hole. So WTF?;)

He isn't complete garbage. But he sure as heck is not a Big 10 type player who will get good minutes on a competative Big 10 team. Taking him back is just step back ward.

I am not going to bash him because I think if he was fit, and worked hard he could be a decent player in the MVC.

The issue is Iowa wasted a scholarship on a guy who was not/did not help them one bit. I remember seeing some highlights of him in high school and he just did not look good at all. No kidding he should have been a good high school player. How many 3A teams have 6-5 let alone 6-9 guys. I could care less about someone being or not being Mr. Basketball in a state, you can generally watch the guy and tell if he is a great player or not. Cougs was OK at best.

We'll be lucky to find two players willing to take our scholarship offer this spring. May have no choice but to bring back Cougs.

I think someone has been hanging out with DJK's ex-roommate...

We are in on a lot of good players. You don't have players like Cezar come to campus just for a good pizza. Coach will not settle for a player just to have a body. He will pick someone up or bank it for next year. That being the case, I would bet just about all I have that he has a good couple players picked up this spring. There will be no banking of a scholarship this spring.

Ok I will be that guy. Why would a player of his caliber want to play for a team that has no chance of winning a championship?:rolleyes:

Honest to god, I rather play Basabe and four guards next year. And when he's in foul trouble, White and four guards. And then Brommer and 4 guards.

I wish BC no ill will, but if Fran can't find a better fit than BC, it will be admission of absolute failure on the recruiting front this spring.

A big guy not interested in rebounding or defense does not fit any need of any Big Ten team.

Wasn't that Brennan Cougill?

The thing I've appreciated about Fran is that he seems completely unwilling to bring guys like this in for any reason. I'm pretty sure he'd rather bank a scholarship than tie one up with a guy that can't play-- especially since we don't really have anything at stake next year anyway. I mean, if Brommer does get hurt it doesn't exactly spoil our bid to the NCAAs, does it?

You offer guys that you can at least project to be good Big Ten players. If you don't get them, you move on. Period.

You don't recruit projects who are going to be Juniors.

I have no problem with Lick's offer. He's tall, has ball skills, and had potential. Yes he was chubby but so are lots of high school kids and Iowa provided an environment to change his body. He didn't do it here and he didn't do it at Kirkwood.

The only place this kid isn't lazy is the buffet. He will have a nice five year career schooling guys at the local YMCA, until his back and feet break down from too much pounding.

Cougill was pretty highly rated early in HS, I believe ESPN had him as a top 10 center as a soph. If he'd kept growing (vertically) to 6'11" or 7'0" he'd probably have been a good B10 center, even without working on his conditioning (which he doesn't appear to have done). But 6'8" with his body type is definitely not what Fran needs to run his system. Fran needs Doug Thomas type guys.

CHawk, I love that comment! You my friend hit it spot on. I was a YMCA gymrat and played a million games against guys like that. He would have been all-YMCA in my day. Remember Ron Angel, one of the greatest shooters I ever played with, where? At the YMCA. CAAR, you made me laugh.

I don't think we want him back, but I will say he wasn't that bad. At the beginning of the season last year he looked good and was starting. He was a freshman, his coach was a total pr*ck who wrecked his confidence along with just about everyone else on the team. But he was a questionable player who wasn't giving effort on (getting in shape) and off the court (class) so we don't need him.
