If you could have a player come back for this year

I was debating on who to add offensively, and then I watched the replay of the CapOne bowl. I'm taking the good Dr Tate. The guy made plays, carried the offense without a rushing attack (and he would have help with that this year), and was über passionate. Oh, and I slammed a beer with his brother in the parking lot of the AlamoDome.

Defensively... Mitch King. That guy was all fire and would clog up the middle like it was his j.o.b. That dude set the tone for the '08 PSU game from the get go. And if that's not reason enough... Then go re-watch that video that theiowahawkeye posted. Mitch F'n King!

Stanzi is probably the best pure dropback passer we've had. Tate was somewhere between Banks and Stanzi in terms of style, but I do think he has been the best overall QB under Ferentz.

IMO Tate is the best passing QB under KF by a huge margin. Stanzi could sell a play action and throw a deep ball better but other than that its Tate.

Switch Tate and Stanzis years and go ahead and switch the year Iowas big ten championship is in.

No way Stanzi wins one in 04 and no way Tate wins any less than one in 08-10.

Put all the play makers Stanzi had with Tate you never would have had the blow ups and everyone would have loved him. All Tate needed was one good receiver who could get open, Hinkel. Most of his losses were when Ed was not available.

Stanzi had a plethora of excellent pass catchers, DJK, McNutt, Stross, Sandeman, Moeaki, Meyers, Reisner and couldn't beat NW. Not to mention 3 straight years of excellent defenses, where as Tate had mediocre ds his last two years.

Jake and James have been only QBs to beat NU in past ten seasons, so let's not use that as a relevant measure. Pretty much every loss to them was the defense's fault, though.

You make some good points. However, Tate did have A. Brodell, D. Douglas (for one season), Stross (as well), C.Solomon, Scott Chandler, and (of course) Holloway! :)

People tend to forget about Solomon a lot. Don't get me wrong, Hinkel was my favorite player on those teams, but Solomon was a playmaker, too. I wouldn't count Brodell among Tate's weapons, though. He was an unknown before having his breakout game in Tate's final one.

Stanzi's weapons were better overall (McNutt is the clear best of either group, and I can go back and forth on Hinkel and DJK for second best). I think TE play makes a big difference. Chandler was good, but Stanzi had Meyers (who is really coming into his own in the NFL now and is, IMO, the most underrated player of the Ferentz era) and Moeaki (the most physically gifted TE of the Ferentz era).

That said, while Stanzi's crew was better, Tate was hardly working with slop for pass catchers (At least in 2004 and 2005. Damn you, Higby).

Fair points. My point was Sandeman was listed for Stanzi, and he had 45 career catches. Brodell had 94 catches (he had more catches in 2006 than he did in 2008, so he wasn't totally unknown). Solomon was the one that I think can be forgotten as you said. The slant against LSU showed what he could do against a good defense.

Looking back at the stats, Brodell ended up leading the team in receiving yards in 2006. But he posted back to back 159-yard games to end the year, which accounted for nearly half of his season total.

Brodell is one of those guys who just couldn't catch a break. Just as he started coming into his own, he tears his hammy and is never the same after that. He was still solid in 2008, but he clearly lost a step with that injury.
