If it's Colts v Vikings: ever a better QB matchup in history

McNabb vs Brady
Warner vs Brady
Warner vs McNair
Elway vs Favre
Aikman vs Kelly
Montana vs Elway
Kelly vs Simms
Montana vs Marino

Look at the players in the years of their careers when they played..IMO, the only thing close is Favre vs Elway, and Elway vs Montana. Marino was just in his second year. He was not a hall of famer at that time. Aikmen was not a hall of famer in the early 1990's.

With Manning vs Favre, you have arguably the two best to ever play the game...

I don't think you can include McNabb, McNair, Kelly. Plus you should probably look at where the players were in the careers when the game was played. For instance, Marino was a rookie when he played against Montana, so at the time it wouldn't have been viewed as greatly as Elway vs Favre or Montana vs. Elway. I'd probably include those two matchups along with Manning vs Favre.

Look at the stats the QB's put up when they played in the Super Bowl. You said there isn't a better matchup, I provided quite a few that would claim there has been.

Not you really did not, sorry.

Jon is correct, this would be the best QB matchup ever.

Realizing there is a difference in QB stats of the different eras of football, here are some good ones (not in particular order) from a historical perspective. I would agree that Favre vs Elway and the possible Favre vs Manning can rate up there, but let's not forget these (all are matchups of 2 Hall of Fame QBs):

Super Bowl 1 = Len Dawson (KC) vs Bart Starr (GB)
Super Bowl 3 = Johnny Unitas (Bal) vs Joe Namath (NYJ)
- note = Unitas injured during the year, but played in the game
Super Bowl 6 = Bob Griese (Mia) vs Roger Staubach (Dal)
Super Bowl 8 = Fran Tarkenton (Min) vs Bob Griese (Mia)
Super Bowl 9 = Fran Tarkenton (Min) vs Terry Bradshaw (Pit)
Super Bowl 10 = Staubach (Dal) vs Bradshaw (Pit) - 6 SB wins between them
Super Bowl 13 = Staubach (Dal) vs Bradshaw (Pit) - again

Again, the stats at the time do not appear as good as now, but it can be argued the game was played much differently back then. I think the 2 Cowboy-Steeler Super Bowl matchups were between 2 QBs playing great (as painful as they were for this Cowboy fan).

I really hope the vikings lose next weekend, I don't think I could watch the SB if Favre is playing. I'm so sick of the guy.

This pretty much sums up my only real rooting interest in the NFL playoffs this season. It might be even more insufferable if the Jets somehow make it 3 in a row against the Colts, so it's a matchup of the last two teams he was on. Gag.

rdubbs, I am talking from a build up in the historical sense. There has never been a matchup of QB's who are as big at this point in their careers and accomplished as these two.

I think if you consider hall of fame QBs with previous Super Bowl wins, only Staubach (Dal) vs Bradshaw (Pit) really matches up and of course rules back then did not favor the QBs so the stats were not nearly as impressive.

If it is Favre vs. Manning, that would be the most interesting QB match-ups in Super Bowl history.

Considering Manning and Favre are two of the greatest QBs of all-time (Favre may be the best ever)... Jon is right.

There is no doubt in my mind that Manning is the best qb of all time. I would say that right now in terms of how they're playing Brees vs Manning would be a better matchup...and Warner vs Manning would have been a better matchup. Just in terms of star power that will be brought to the table...you can't argue with the Favre vs Manning matchup.

I think each of them was in their sixth year in the league when they first met in the Superbowl. I dont think either had HOF credentials at that point.

He's entitled to his opinion (even if it's wrong) as am I, gotta love this whole message board thing don't ya?
Oh for sure, I don't necessarily think its a white/black answer/opinion to it. But I think Jon has it right, those two are HOFers and arguably the two best ever to play at their respective positions. That's tough to argue, in my opinion.
