If it's Colts v Vikings: ever a better QB matchup in history

Oh for sure, I don't necessarily think its a white/black answer/opinion to it. But I think Jon has it right, those two are HOFers and arguably the two best ever to play at their respective positions. That's tough to argue, in my opinion.

Montana vs Elway?

Impossible to argue really.

I think each of them was in their sixth year in the league when they first met in the Superbowl. I dont think either had HOF credentials at that point.

Maybe not, but at that time, many felt the same then... as you do today. Besides, most felt that these two were destined to NFL lore.

Montana vs Elway?

All time stats...
TDs: Favre 1st, Manning 3rd. Elway 5th, Montana 9th.
Pass Comps: Favre 1st, Manning 3rd, Elway 4th, Montana 9th
Yards: Favre 1st, Elway 3rd, Manning 4th, Montana 10th

As a Bears fan it hurts to admit that Favre is the best QB ever, and Payton Manning will likely be right under him or better than him when he is done.

Elway was clutch in the 4th Q, Montana ruled in the postseason. Both are HOF QBs, both are legends, but I don't think either (when you look back 20 years from now) are as good as Manning or Favre.

Staubach vs. Bradshaw in SB XXIII. Both were established, HOF-calibur QBs at the time. Bradshaw was playing in his 3rd SB. I believe Staubach was close to retirement, in fact. Hard to beat that matchup.

That being said, neither put up the passing numbers like Favre and Manning, but as has been said, the game was entirely different back then. All 4 QBs know/knew how to win.

And as a Steelers fan, I'm a little biased.

Super Bowl Wins

Montana-4
Elway-2
Favre-1
Manning-1

My thoughts, exactly. Don't see how you top Staubach vs. Bradshaw. That was back in the day. Montana vs. Elway not too shabby, either.

If it's Manning vs. Favre, that's a great matchup, too. But not sure it beats Staubach vs. Bradshaw.

(Kids are so ignorant of history ...)

Roger is my all time favorite NFL player. I will get that out right now :)

But the 1976 Superbowl followed the 1975 season. At the time, that was just Staubach's second career pro bowl season. He did have a Superbowl title at the time. He had only thrown for 15,878 yards before the start of that season, and 52 touchdowns. He wound up throwing for 153 in his career and over 22,000 yards passing. Had Staubach never played after that Superbowl against Bradshaw in 1976, he would not have been in the Hall of Fame. 146 of Bradshaw's 212 career TD passes came after that 1975 season as well. 1975 was Bradshaw's first Pro Bowl season.

Combined at the start of the 1976 Superbowl, those two do not hold up to what Favre and Manning have combined to do if they meet in the Superbowl in three weeks.

In Bradshaw's career, he led the league in just two major statistical categories, just once; 28 TD passes in a year in 1978 and 24 passes intercepted in 1970. Were it not for the Steel Curtain backing him up, I don't think Bradshaw gets into the HOF.

Then again....those 1970's Steelers teams remind me a lot of Iowa football under Kirk Ferentz.

You could probably make a case that against other modern era QB's, Staubach's resume is a bit shaky too. But I'd take Roger over Terry if I had 2 minutes to go in the game and down four.

Jon - you are talking about Super Bowl X in 1976. Do your stats again for Super Bowl XIII in 1979 when they met again for one of the best Super Bowl games ever (35-31 Steelers - still hurts). This is Bradshaw's 3rd SB (2 wins already) and Roger's 4th SB (2-1 in the Super Bowl at the time). I will agree that Favre vs Manning may be as good if it happens, but the history before, during, and after this game (Bradshaw gets another one after this) is pretty good. The Steel Curtain did not rescue Bradshaw in this one, Jackie Smith did. :(

OK...I will yield here to say that it certainly was a good QB matchup, considering both did make the Hall of Fame, late in their careers after they had reached the pinnacle of the game, they are on the short list for this meeting

I really hope the vikings lose next weekend, I don't think I could watch the SB if Favre is playing. I'm so sick of the guy.

My thoughts exactly...except I definitely WON'T watch the Super Bowl if Lord Favre is playing. I really really hope the Vikings lose next week.

It would be funny though, if the Jets beat the Vikings in the Super Bowl.

Ok, using your comparison of the 70s Steelers teams and Football under KF, who would play Swann and Stalworth for the Hawks??
